Non-smoking Ship

Recommended Posts

Not sure about if they ever had one or not...but I can see them slowly getting rid of smoking in the casino..which would pretty much make the ship smoke free.....as that is the only/last place you can smoke inside now.

It has changed pretty quickly in the past 5 years regarding smoking on cruise ships so in another few years we maybe me talking about  "back in the day" when smoking was allowed in casinos....

I believe Empress is the only ship in RCCL's fleet that has a 100% smoke-free casino.

Royal is in a tough spot.  Do you completely segregate your traditional money trifecta (gambler+drinker+smoker) as your ships are offering more family-orientated experience?  At the end of the day, it's all about the Benjamins.

I wonder how many people are like me and would like to gamble but won't go near the casino because of the smoke.  I can't stand the smell and hate how that smell lingers in your clothes after being around it.

I completely agree.  I prefer smoke-free casinos while on land.  But cruise lines are in a different competitive environment.  Customers can simply pick a different cruise line that allows them to smoke at the casino/ship.

Or, counterpoint,  nonsmokers could simply pick a cruise line that doesn't allow smoking. (I'm a nonsmoker btw, but I know what I'm getting myself into, and don't expect others to change for me.)

You could be onto something there.  In some regions it will be impossible to be smoke-free.  Such as the Asia itineraries.

maybe a smoking casino and non-smoking casino could be an option to try on one ship..and see if all the non-smokers really do spend all the time and $ in there or not before rolling something out fleetwide...

Still not realistic to expect there to be nowhere on board to smoke....still a good portion of cruisers who do smoke and/or take a cruise for that very reason......I think that its a pretty fair balance now as the smoking areas are extremely limited....and besides when you walk by a smoking area on a ship, I don't ever recall smelling it in or having to sit there and breathe it in..95% of the ship is smoke free

More smoking on my land based vacations to Cuba, Dominican and Mexico etc to be honest.......

Main problem is during the evening were the Casino turns into smoking lounge , During my last cruise there were many times you can see group of people grabbing chairs and seat for a long time smoking and chatting. I heard people saying it was too cold to smoke on deck 15 so that is why everyone there.

So , or band smoking also in the casino or add somewhere a small smoking lounge like they have in some of the airports.

If I were RC , I would take one of the big ships and do a revenue test , with smoking allow for few weeks and than with smoking not allow for few weeks (publishing ahead of time) , if the revenue will be the almost the same or better when smoking is not allow they can rollout it on the entire fleet. Also if more and more people will complain about the smoking in the survey it might help.

Hell would break loose.  If there was such an uproar about proper attire in the MDR, imagine the chaos if RCL took another place away for the smokers.

Well  the solution might be a smoking lounge which is not located in the middle of ship and have a very good ventilation system . Regarding all hell break loose , I might remind you that 25 years ago they said  the same for banning smoking during flights , 15 years ago about banning smoking in restaurants and 10-12 years ago about smoking in bars.

Yes I know that its not the same as people in bars  can get outside and smoke , but I remember everyone were sure the bars revenues will dropped and bars will be forced to be closed ...

I know for Casinos its a  different story, there is a claim the smoking regulation in Atlantic city which  started around 8-10 years ago were one of the triggers to the bankrupt many of them suffered  . Revel ,  for example , which was a new very impressive  non smoking Casino  ,  shutdown after two years as it did not brought enough revenue and was not full most of the time while The Borgata was full (which still had designated smoking areas) . So yes its not that simple

Actually, I think they tried this already.  A couple of years ago there was at least 1 ship that they tried a non-smoking casino for a couple of cruises. Granted, it was not a LONG test but they did try it.  That was the last I heard of trying a non-smoking casino so my guess is that it did not go well.   Of course, you cannot expect a test like that to go well when nobody was forewarned.  I'm sure they had nothing but complaints from smoking gamblers who had no idea they were going to be victims of a non-smoking experiment.  The non-smokers weren't made aware of it so they stayed away, like they always do.

I think that the results of going non-smoking is pretty well established in other industries, such as restaurants.  At first there is a holy uproar from smokers who either deal with it or change restaurants/lines but in the end, they gain more non-smokers, who eventually make up for the smokers that they lose.  We are going through this exact scenario right now with our American Legion Post.  The smokers are in full revolt as our new social quarters are going smoke-free but trust me, there are far more non-smoking members who have been campaigning for YEARS to have a smoke-free Post.  They will now come where they would not, before.  I believe, in the long run, we will gain more than we will lose but it will take time. BTW, there will still be a smoking bar for those who smoke; it's just the new lounge and dining room that will be smoke-free.

Celebrity seems to do well with non-smoking casinos but everyone knows they are non-smoking before they ever book so the expectations are established, beforehand.

I think a smoking lounge club on the ship would solve pretty much it all and keep everyone happy..surprised some cruise line hasn't done this. However, its all about the bottom line..I think if Royal though they would make MORE money banning smoking in the casino as non-smokers would gamble and spend more...they would have done it. When have you ever know Royal NOT to do something that makes them more money at the disappointment of the customer...lol

That being said...only cruise I was ever on with  a non-smoking casino was my last cruise which was Celebrity...and it was the least amount of time and money I ever spent on a cruise casino......

As a smoker myself i think smoking should be banned from all in door areas, you cant smoke in bars or resteraunts nowadays ( even in asia ) so why allow it on ships?

Even though its allowed i myself will go outside to designated smoking areas.

The casino on Navigator has been fully non-smoking for many (if not all) of the sailings from Southampton this year. At least, that was the situation whilst we were on board in September and we heard from others that this had been established some time before we boarded.

I also recall that Independence had trialled a ban on smoking in all interior venues a few years ago. I don't remember if the ban extended to exterior spaces as well.

That can work in the Caribbean but what about cruises like @twangster is on  now , 13 nights , when most of the days is around 40 and less  with the winds , it will be too cold for you to smoke outside.

I think it can work only if all the major cruise line will have the same policy on the same time

It would be interesting to see the revenue numbers from Celebrity casinos.  Are they low because they are smoke free?  Or will gambling smokers overcome their addiction to gamble?  Only RCCL knows.

Right now, I don't go into the Royal casino, not even to spend my free $5 offer.   What revenue is lost from non-smokers?

A smoker asked Bayley on the president's cruise about more smoking areas.  His response was "yeah that's not a trend we are seeing in society".

Im from scotland we call 40 degrees with wind swirling round you outside " SUMMER"

Also I dont smoke inside my house, be it sun, rain or snow i go outside, it comes down to having respect for non smokers which includes my wife.

However respect should work both ways, if im in a designated smoking area outside no one has the right to complain or make comments to me about the smoke or smell

It was horrible on Liberty of the Seas last week! I took a poll on our Facebook Roll Call Page and it ran a strong 3-1 that it was a big problem. They either need to place sliding doors on the casino and totally ban smoking on the 11th deck. Especially where it is right by the children's splash park!

There was a non-smoking casino section on the Allure that at the beginning of the cruise was tolerable to me (unlike the Enchantment) but it did get worse as the week went on.   The smoke  smell did drift up the Aft stairwell by the entrance to the smoking section.  The Casino was Deck 4 and the smell was up to Deck 6, once up to Deck 8.    It also infiltrated the Starboard Aft elevator bank.  We learned not to use either.

I remember Carnival trying the no-smoking ship but I don't think it lasted very long.  I'd prefer a totally smoke-free environment but in reality, the only-real impact I've felt is in the Casino and I'm not a big gambler so the impact is minimal over 7 days.    If I were a bigger gambler, I might feel otherwise.   I wonder where they smoke on a Disney ship since there's no Casino?
