WAAAYTOOO Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 I put this into the same category as Charleston and Key West. If they don't want me there, I have no regrets about going elsewhere. No big loss for me. PPPJJ-GCVAB, SpeedNoodles, stevendom57 and 5 others 8 Quote
twangster Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 Tender port. Won't be missed. Jmccaffrey, WAAAYTOOO, BrianB and 2 others 5 Quote
teddy Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 That’s too bad Coastal Maine is all about tourism. The loss of any income can make for some tough off seasons. Quote
Pattycruise Posted November 9, 2022 Report Posted November 9, 2022 It’s a beautiful port. Oh well! YOLO, teddy and PhillyLady 3 Quote
SpeedNoodles Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 We didn't get off of Voyager in September. Last time we were there we found the people to be pretty unfriendly, and knowing they don't want us there? Meh ... Acadia is nice. It's not THAT nice. YOLO Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 I am with @Pattycruise. I love it there. I guess I could drive up, but never have (Boothbay is as far as I have driven). I will miss it if it gets dropped. Portland is OK, but for me, nowhere near as memorable as Bar Harbor. teddy and PhillyLady 2 Quote
Adriana Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 Oh wow, what a shame! Such a beautiful place!! But, it is their home, if they prefer to keep it quiet, they got it. Quote

barjpoe Posted November 11, 2022 Report Posted November 11, 2022 Does it effect the 2023 cruises or not til 2024? Quote

ScooterScott22 Posted November 12, 2022 Report Posted November 12, 2022 Interesting since there was a similar notice about visitor restrictions at French Polynesia, but it did not mention cruise ships. https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/french-polynesia-to-limit-number-of-tourists/ Wonder if there is anything in the works here about future cruise restrictions. wstephensi Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 Sorry to hear. It was so beautiful when we visited in October. It was our favorite port of the cruise. PhillyLady 1 Quote
Thorntor Posted November 19, 2022 Report Posted November 19, 2022 Beautiful area. First visited on a cruise then went back for a 5 day visit the next year. Residents were OK, but hospitality is not their strong suit. Quote
Reigert2008 Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 Well, this is a bummer. We had a 2020 cruise canceled because , you know. In 2021 we took a land trip to recreate much of the cruise and we enjoyed Bar Harbor for several days. We’d like to go back, but don’t need longer than a day there so a cruise would be perfect. Bar harbor is kinda hard to get to and there’s not much else around, so I guess we won’t be back. Quote
nferr Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 Bar Harbor is beautiful, and Acadia National Park is amazing. Last two years i've gone up on my motorcycle, nine and a half hours each way. You really need to spend a few full days there to appreciate the beauty of it. That said I think it still would be a nice port day to take a quick tour of the park and spend a couple of hours in town. The town itself is pretty small so I understand the concerns of getting overrun with four or five thousand passengers getting off a mega ship. PhillyLady 1 Quote
smokeybandit Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 The only time I was in Bar Harbor it was so foggy all I saw of it was the road WAAAYTOOO 1 Quote

RCVoyager Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 The story of the beginning of Acadia National Park is a great one. At a time there was little to no federal money for acquisition, improvement, or enforcement of the National Parks, a man named George Dorr, who was born to great wealth, never married, and had no heirs, gave so much of his money to make that park happen, his accountant had to hide $2000 dollars from him for his funeral. Once the land was purchased, John D. Rockefeller II gave millions for improvements. It is a great story. mom2mybugs and PhillyLady 2 Quote
BrianB Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 The town council had already implemented restrictions on cruise ship passenger numbers. This story appears to be about a petition vote which will put a new, more restrictive policy, on the ballot. If they don’t want us there…fine with me. I don’t like tendering anyway. But it is a very beautiful place! Quote
twangster Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 The feds should probably review any grants over the past 5 years to see if they were provided on the basis of supporting cruise ships or passengers. Ports in Maine received $18M in 2022. The Army Corp of Engineers awarded $6M to a specific project in Bar Harbor. If the justification for any grants included cruise ship passengers that needs to be reviewed and possibly reimbursed by the town now. mom2mybugs, michaelp1446, WAAAYTOOO and 4 others 5 2 Quote
JimnKathy Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 We enjoyed the town of Bar Harbor last month on our Voyager sailing. Acadia National Park was beautiful, but the Park Service only allows tour buses a limited amount of time to spend driving through the park. We were able to get out of the bus for about 15 minutes to take a few photos, but the remainder of the photos were quick snapshots on a moving bus. I really felt like the whole deal was a bit of a rushed ripoff for a paid tour, even though our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Bar Harbor would be an interesting place to spend a few days, but they seem to be a little put off by the cruise crowd. Quote
