Smoking inside balcony

So I was at my door when security showed up at the room across the hall from me. I heard security say someone reported them for smoking on the balcony so they monitored them with video and caught them doing it and have video evidence. They then asked if they could come in. I obviously wasn't privy to the rest of the conversation but I haven't seen them since.

So what is the penalty for something like this? Just curious.

I recall reading that if you get caught smoking, they remove you.

It's in the policy that smoking is only allowed in destinated areas and therefore you are breaking the cruise contract and subject to being removed or banned from the cruise line.

Good. Hope Royal Caribbean took hard and fast action. It's a shared experience. Play by the rules or be gone.

Just wish Royal would do the same thing, or worse, to the lounge chair hogs by the pools!

I can tell you here on symphony they have removed people's belongings from some chairs that were being hogged. That being said it is few and far between. Still plenty of hogging going on.

I highly doubt they are removing people for a first offense of smoking- most of the time they don't even respond to reports of smoking. So either it was more than just cigarette smoke OR someone reported it over and over until security finally caved and came by.  Hell, our room attendant saw my wifes cigarettes on the table and told her "if you smoke on the balcony, just make sure the neighbors aren't out and keep the butts in an empty can and not over the side"   Of course, my wife only smoked in the designated area, but were definitely thrown off that the room attendant even suggested it!

I probably would have reported him for making the suggestion. Not a fan of people smoking in places they shouldn't. Growing up around it and had no choice or say. Well, now I do. Not in my face or space. Other than that, I'm a delight. LOL.

I don’t like when smokers tend to smoke in the non-smoking section in the casino.  There is no one stopping them or redirecting them has been my experience

Well I have to say I found it odd the smoking section was where it was, on 15 port near the pool. Then again, it seemed to be one of the windiest places on the ship so maybe that's why it is there ... All the smoke seems to blow aft.

I believe the minimum action is a warning.

Then comes an additional charge added to the room account for ‘sanitizing’ the room to remove the smoke smell…whether or not you think there is any.

After that comes the more drastic penalties like disembarkation and finally…banning.

I’m thinking it depends a lot on the attitude of the offender. Being rude, nasty and insulting will likely result in elevating to the higher penalties. As will repeat offenses.

This was never an issue issue when they allowed it on the balconies, people were a lot more spread out. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

There is no reason to coddle the air polluters. Put them in an unattractive space and leave the open pool deck to those who want to enjoy the FRESH air.

People loved the smell of my black raspberry pipe tobacco on symphony... Just saying. 

Got plenty of comments/compliments from non smokers walking by.

It seems more of a control thing for you, there is plenty of space for everyone at the pool deck to enjoy.

I could see it being a thing on the upper pool deck where the smoke would go up, not necessarily in the middle of the crowded pool area itself where, inevitably, someones cigarette butt would make it into the pool and cause a whole slew of things (probably).

I imagine part of the designation area selection is to keep the things that are on fire/have ash, away from as many flammable objects as possible. Like towels, etc. Which is why smoking is banned on balconies in the first place RE: Star Princess. Though I suppose there's carpet in the smoking area of the casinos, so there's that.

 As much as I despise and try and get away from the smell of cigarettes, cigars and marijuana as soon as I can, I actually have no problem with pipe tobacco.

There is plenty of room to enjoy, but one of two ways to get from one end of the ship to the other requires those with asthma and/or allergies to smoke to walk through the unhealthy air. This now means that HALF of my access traversing the length of the pool deck is severely compromised.

Want to call it a "control thing," then I will assert that it is a control of my HEALTH thing. I don't care if others choose to jeopardize their own health, but as soon as their actions negatively impact MINE, it's a no go.

Most people don't realize that smoking on the balcony is a huge safety hazard.  It may not seem like it, but with the wind blowing just right, a wind tunnel can be created on the balcony.

Couple that with a few items left outside to dry (also against the rules for safety) and a cigar or cigarette butt that's not extinguished, it can catch fire.  Fire on ship is really bad.

 

I personally don't want my cruise to end or someone to be injured or die because someone can't follow the rules:

Fire is too dangerous on a cruise ship smoking shouldn't be allowed at all. Now I have lost that battle as it is allowed. If we did smell someone smoking you just call guest services or tell the room attendant? Either?

Oh, I'm sure it was an issue for the non-smokers on either side and above you...they just couldn't do anything about it.

And a lot of people likey absolutely hated it but enough maturity to just not say anything.
