Diamond Plus

Recommended Posts

Well , just got off Mariner and they are taking away more Diamond Plus perks.  No more embark, disembark special treatment.  They have pushed us off and offer The Key in which anyone can pay $20 a day to receive what we took years and $$$ thousands to earn!  You lost my business Royal Caribbean....each year they change the program and treat their loyals not so royal...see ya!

And this is what everyone is willing to spend sooooo much money to reach Diamond Plus??? Things aren't the way they used to be years ago. I've sailed 40 years and I have seen many changes and not for the benefit of the cruisers/loyal customers. I've said it once and I'll say it again. If you want to spend all that extra lovely cash just to say you are "Diamond Plus", be my guest. RCCL will be more than happy to take your money. I agree with @Debdoescruises88 . I've reached a point with RCCL and there tactics in taking away perks. So now, we have to pay $20.00/per day, for a perk we already had, for a "little orphan annie decoder ring" that you use once to get priority embarkation??? Seriously??!? No thanks!! I'll take my business elsewhere!!

I could not disagree more. The prices years ago were so much higher and taking into account inflation, cruises are incredibly inexpensive compared to what they were. They keep the bases price down so more people can afford to go. You than pay for what you want. This is a better model. You may do something different but if you're looking at a different cruise line it will be the same.

Actually, you are so far from the truth. As I've said, I've cruise 40 years, not 10 or 15 like most. I've seen what cruises offered throughout the years and things have been taken away and curtailed to the point that in 5-10 years, you will be paying for your meals, sandwiches, snacks, etc. through vending machines on the ship, which is currently being tested on a cruise line I dare not mention. The service itself decreased dramatically from 10 years ago. The quality of food MOST DEFINITELY changed. If you've cruised as long as I have, you will take note of all the changes. I can see it now... HOLIDAY INN of the SEAS!!

I have cruised for many years and I still disagree with you. My honest question is if you don't like it, why do you go, why do you post and complain? Since your moving on with your friend,  i guess you will not be posting here anymore since this is the Royal Caribbean blog. I wish you good luck finding something you enjoy.

Well we don't know that that's why the OP booked so many cruises...to get to Diamond Plus. Should never assume.

So....how would you feel about anything that you once had or was included but now you lost it AND you have to pay extra to get it back.....not really fair at all. Whether its cruise loyalty program or anything. Most ppl complain when their bank ups fees for stuff that used to be free or your cable company now charges you for what used to be included in your package etc.

While you may not feel the same or have a different opinion...facts are facts..many things that used to be included are now not....I cant talk about 40 years ago..but in the last 6 years cruising even I have seen a big change towards upsell and charge for everything extra they can, remove "free" venues for pay for use ones etc......

Its a fact, things have changed....and its only better for those with lots of $$...

Whether you want to continue to cruise with Royal or you like it or not is your decision, but that doesn't change facts.

I think people have the wrong perspective.  These were perks that were given to them without any guarantees. These are businesses and need to have profits.  That's what pays for all of these new ships. Years ago when prices were relatively higher we had window rooms on Vision. Is that comparable to the Oasis ships. Also, when they start programs they are not necessarily permanently viable. I think people know this and that's what works them up. At one time, half the ship wasn't Diamond or above. Is this sustainable? Or how about the perks for Pinnacles,  does anyone think their benefits are permanent? I'm just talking about reality. If someone finds something that works  better, they SHOULD move on.  It's just better than cpmplainig.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, we know that.

Royal makes lots of profits..before these changes.

Half the ships aren't diamond...at least never any I have been on.

Nothing wrong with liking a product but not being happy with the changes. Its possible to do both.

These boards are for voicing opinions, details, facts etc...

Used to be something to loyalty....these days it seems not so much.

Can you elaborate ? Is not there a queue for D+ in the check in ? they allow you on only after The keys people or with the key people ?

If it was anything like Harmony...

Terminal has dedicated entrance/line for Suites and Pinnacle. All others share the other entrance. Security screening, same deal. Didn't notice any signage for The Key at this point.

Once cleared security then the check in tablet people are broken down to the various levels, plus The Key. Waiting area, Suites and Pinnacles have one area. The Key has another holding pen. Don't recall waiting arrangements for Diamond and Diamond Plus. Boarding, B2B, think Star Class, rest of the Suites and Pinnacles, The Key, Diamond+, Diamond, and so on...

I never said I didn't like RCCL or else I wouldn't have been Diamond Plus many moons ago.  I'm just sharing information substantiating what other's see. We all are here to share and respect everyone's opinions and experiences and agree with @monctonguy's statement " These boards are for voicing opinions, details, facts etc... "

but are the other lines really doing anything differently ?      seems to me this is a common trend.    while i've never cruised a "luxury" line and never will,  just not our style,  from what i've read they are still catering to those who want all the perks, bells and whistles but it comes at a cost.  Royal is considered a family value cruise line these days so i'm not really surprised they are scaling back on catering to the "elite".    no disrespect to the OP but those changes aren't happening on a whim.   A simple call to RCCL or reading these boards can provide all with more than enough information to preemptively know of the changes rather than running a risk of disappointment once you board.    While we only cruise one a year, i'm constantly reading and researching about it all.   I find it hard to believe that someone who has spent " $$$ thousands" over the years cruising wouldn't take to the time to do a little research on the constant changes that are going on within the industry before spending $$$ thousands more on their next cruise...   and welcome to the blog!

And before the key was it the same ? (beside the key are now boarding before D+) ? I am asking since I found out that in the US and Europe , once they start boarding its going quite fast.

I guess we can also complain that suits (even JS) are boarding before D+ , the question is did D+ lost any benefits since the key was presented ? or its just the feeling that someone that pays 20 $ per day get some of the benefits as D+ ?

Have to look at Royal's main competitor, Carnival.  They have been offering Faster To The Fun passes for years now.  If people are basically throwing money at you for access, you can only say no for so long.  Especially when they have shareholders to answer to.

Yup, unless more has changed. I recall some of the entrance/security policies had changed a month or so prior to The Key at Port Canaveral.

I guess its also the numbers playing here , it always looked funny for me that the lines of the gold check in are many times busier than the general lines.

We just started sailing with Royal and I also noticed they don't offer all that much to the repeat customers, even at diamond ++++ level.  You just another in the crowd.  I feel Norwegian offers better benefits to their repeat cruisers.  I thought it was just me.

The OP's experience was not my experience from Port Canaveral a couple weeks ago on Harmony. D+ had special area and we boarded ahead of The Key.

I never pay attention to areas for disembarkation. When it's time to go, I just head to the disembarkation point. Only exception is when I am in a suite and then I let Concierge escort me off.

Let's break this down TRUTHFULLY:

A) Diamond launch access and free drinks between 5 to 8:30 PM
   -  this is ok
B) 3 Daily drink vouchers during the happy hour to be consume in any bar.
   -  This is the same as "A" above
C) bottle water/juices in the room at embarkation day.
  - Welcome Waters & Snack + Beverage Selection is given from Emerald Level & UP
D) Discounts in internet packages and other discounts
 - Discounts for internet & other discounts are given from Gold Level & UP and it's on the sheet of paper left in your cabin
E) Many by one get one free (Wine , beer and more).
  - EVERYONE gets this as it's a sales pitch on your daily cruise compass.

I do agree the Diamond main benefits is the alcohol/diamond launch , there is also the free picture which is only diamond and above . The question is if Diamonds had better benefits few years ago and if the Diamond perks were harmed due to the key program ?

"Ok"?? Dude, unlimited alcoholic beverages every night is something no other cruise line does for its loyal customers. That is an incredible value.

I dont think so at all. The biggest issue I hear is the moving location of Diamond Lounges and/or more Diamond members than before.  Meh, not a big deal to me.

6 minutes ago, Traveler said:

Absolutely not. It's no different than what the Suite guests get in terms of "buying into" and once again, Key guests have to pay for the benefits, whereas Diamond guests get it for free.

There's also only a couple of benefits that Diamond guests share with The Key.  I believe a lot of Diamond cruisers are upset that the Key benefits were not extended to them as well, which is just petty.

You people talk about lack of loyalty but you have none yourselves.  Just as Royal is trying to make as much as they can, you all are just trying to get as much as you can. It's very hypocritical but also comical. Here is what I've experienced. Many entitled angry people that declare they'll never sail on Royal again seem to reappear on every sailing I'm on. Go to the Suite lounge or the Diamond lounge.  The temper tantrums are almost nonstop. I just don't understand why people with so many complaints go again and again.

Sorry...just okay since I don't drink alcohol and I can't comment on it. 😇

I can add my own D+ boarding experience on Harmony on the 3-night cruise right before @Matt.  We arrived later than usual for us, probably 11:15 - 11:30.  When we got up to the boarding area, it looked like they were boarding the masses already.  There was a large crowd of people boarding (maybe 200+ people).  My husband went up to a RC employee standing behind a roped off area and asked her if there was a line to board specifically for D+.  She let us into the roped off area and told us to follow behind the family currently boarding.  I think they were suite guests.  I have to say, it was really nice not to have to wait with that crowd to board.  😉
