  1. We are on the Ultimate World Cruise right now. Just heading back to Ushuaia (after visiting a Penguin Rookery). I will post something more substantial and detailed later, but the short course is: 1). No drama … the experienced cruisers already figured this out. Actually, the cruise so far has been extremely relaxing. Although we have been a little bit too busy. 2). Thé entertainment overall has been better than “normal” cruises (some of it excellent … rare for a Radiance class ship). The food has been hit and miss (as usual) … however, we did have the best MDR dish in over 30 cruises a few nights ago. 3). The staff is in over perform mode. They are doing a phenomenal job. 4). 1,600 on this segment is well below capacity. 700+ Diamond and above C&A members. 1,600 only should bring up some questions. 5). Tons of dancing opportunities … only once did we have to elbow our way around the dance floor I will start a start a separate thread when we get back on board. 2. We won! Received the email yesterday. Ocean View with Large balcony on the “hump”. $100 a head. A bit of an upgrade I guess from far back of the boat and smaller balcony. We spend a lot of time outside in the morning drinking our Crown Lounge coffees. Simple things in life, I guess...First we’ve won since right after the pandemic. J&S

  3. Quick background … we are on Serenade right now (we have done the Drake Crossing twice now). We are “segmenters” so we will be getting off in Santiago (on JAN 23). We have been cruising since 2006, so we are always looking for new parts of the world to visit. We can not envision spending too much time away from friends and family. Still, when the segments came out we jumped on the chance for this once in a lifetime experience. We booked an Oceanview for the Buenos Aires to Santiago leg, used Air2Sea to get a good price on our Toronto to Buenos Aires flight (plus the return from Santiago), AND won our Royal Up bid to a balcony (2 days before sailing). All of the updates will be in no order at all (get ready for a Tetris style information flow). Questions are encouraged, but expect a delay (we may not have coverage every day, and we will not be monitoring this site when we are on the dance floor. ) We went to the Loyalty Celebration on JAN 10 (we normally do not go). The crew appreciation portion of the hour was new to us (back of house and front of house nominees and winners for DEC were introduced and celebrated). It was nice. Top Level Cruiser Numbers: 115 Pinnacles 300 D+ 325 D Only 1,600 passengers for this leg. Cruise Director (Joff) is quite good. He has a nice mix of comedy and fun done in a mostly “relaxed” manner (very appropriate for a World Cruise). The World Cruisers are gravitating to him quickly … he is a stabilizing part of the cruise. Falklands port day was “juggled” to get us to Antarctica and back before some very bad weather sets in. We still experienced a “Drake Shake” on the way down (All most 30 ft waves). The sea sickness bags appeared in the stairwells at 8:00AM on JAN 10. More on the Drake later. Like @twangster said … “It is part of the experience” … so we are going in with a positive mindset and a “boatload” of Gravol The singers are excellent (all 5 of them … no weak links). We will make sure we see all of their shows. I’ll post some thoughts on most of the days, but (to be clear) this is a “not at all live blog” so replies will be very delayed (we do not have the WiFi package). Send questions … but expect delays. 4. It poured rain, like bad. The casino opened late and the smokers were mad. They couldn't get ashtrays until they officially opened. I didn't know that was a thing. But the slots were really tight and this made my mother mad. It was Mexican night in the WJ and MDR. At 6 the line for the WJ snaked down the stairs, so I took the elevator to the casino and there were children playing on them. I talked to two nice couples from Florida who cruise monthly in casino comps while we waited. Dinner was okay. Because of the tipping our servers are extra. I mean they stay at our table, which imho makes us seem greedy because they will bring random things out. Like we love the seed bread. Tonight it was a combo of the seeds and cheese bread.....and it was warm. They brought us a basket and 2 plates of bread. My brother finished it. But it was a lot. There is other stuff but the ship is rocking insanely hard, we are speeding or something and I am actually nauseous. So I am going to drink a seltzer and lay down.

  5. Day 4 sea day. Last night was insane with the rocking. I had to lay completely flat for an hour for the nausea to go away. But to backtrack. My mother shenanigans are starting to wear thin. She proceeded to have a very loud, both earbuds in ear so my voice is loud, conversation at midnight with her bf. Who is 70 and hard of hearing. Then as soon as her head hit the pillow, fell asleep and started snoring like wood being cut. She and my brother got into it because she insist on putting her phone to charge constantly. Like if she uses 10% of her battery she has to get it back to 100%. Neither of us care but, she narrates everything so it seems like she is complaining. So my brother offered advice and she got emotional and loud. At dinner our server tried to talk to her about Cozumel and she ignored him. We had to apologize. She drinked 3 daiquiris from our vouchers and was loose. She tried to tell a lady who sat down next to her at "her" machine if she must sit there don't smoke. The lady sat down lit a cigarette. This is supposed to be a relaxing cruise because I packed Wonder. Yet she asked every hour "what's the itinerary?" I keep telling her if she wants to do something, do it. But she doesn't want to do anything alone. In the WJ she had a very loud conversation about someone stealing from her job. So many people were staring. She is a bathroom hog. She takes 2hrs to get ready. We both try to give her time. I get up early, my brother goes to the gym and yet we come back 90+min later and she hasn't been in the bathroom. She just sits there watching her phone charge. Meaning we can't completely use the bathroom because she is half done. Anyway, rant aside, I slept to 8:30, showered and left the room around 10. I played and lost what I was comfortable with and then went to the ice show. It was good and only one skater fell. We then hit the WJ before we do the escape room at 3:30.

  6. And on a more lighthearted note we have a new mystery. It's the underwear mystery. When I came back from the island this morning, my cabin steward had been in and cleaned the room. There was a pair of underwear lying in a heap on my desk. This was surprising because first of all, I don't leave my underwear lying on the desk. I am a tidy person and when I get undressed at night all of my clothes go straight into my little dirty clothes hamper in the closet. I am not one to scatter clothes around and pick them up later. Secondly, my room steward has been so cute with his little decorations and so friendly and personable, it seems odd that he would just find a pair of underwear on the floor and randomly leave it on the desk of all places. Still, I told myself that I must've overlooked that pair of underwear and thrown it around even though I know full well I didn't. I picked it up and guess what? IT'S NOT MINE. It is most definitely a ladies pair of underwear, white with lace and a little butterfly printed on it. Where on earth did it come from. Why was it on my desk. Do I need to boil my entire desk now and everything on it? Unfortunately I handled the underwear enough before realizing it wasn't mine, to confirm that it's clean underwear, but the mystery remains. Did he find it sticking out from under the bed and assume it was mine? I mean my cabin steward is tidy enough to the point where I think if he found a pair of underwear on the floor he would genuinely fold it into little quarters and lay it gently on the couch or something, not toss it on the desk on top of my papers, which it appears to have been. That is not like him at all. Obviously this is from the person in front of me who used this cabin but… So many questions.

  7. MJ, once again, kicked it out of the park! Pre cruise, I requested to sit front center at the ice slow, with buttered popcorn and blankets. We had it all. Yes, we did look a bit bougie, but I’m old, so I can do and look however I want. The small perks for having wrinkles. MJ is really intuitive about knowing the line between being there but still allowing privacy. I think that’s the hardest thing about being a genie! The weather is promising to be much better today, it’s definitely hadn’t been “get a tan” weather. Some of us stayed in the suite hot tub last night. It’s opened 24 hours, which was surprising. The suite deck is really nice. Royal never did sell the pass tot four of the beds up there. Now opened for free. We are in Costa Maya today. Two are going snorkeling, one is staying back to study, the rest of us have rented a six seated golf cart to explore. Casino is closed. The trip has been so wonderful. We definitely are going to do a star class again. Once again, Im writing on my cell phone and not proofreading, so excuse all the mistakes!

  8. I saw One Sky last night, one of their stage productions. I did not care for it. I just don't like stage productions where it's a collection of songs with no storyline, no characters to get to know, no emotional investment, no payoff. I mean that's exactly what the aqua show is but for the aqua show, it works because the music is phenomenal and the stunts are incredible and mesmerizing. On stage, they're singing these mostly original songs and they're just not grabby and it's like watching an hours worth of music videos. Having said that of course the cast is phenomenal, amazing singing and dancing, beautiful costumes, wonderful sets, really dazzling. Just not my thing. I really really liked Hairspray on symphony, and did not like Mamma Mia on Allure. Mamma Mia is definitely not my thing--I feel like that show is about two hours worth of karaoke with a loose storyline strung in between. Speaking of which, Cats is the next show up. We will see how that goes. I've seen cats before and while it was fun to see it the first time, especially with my family, I'm not sure if that's a show I am going to enjoy a second time. but that's OK. Not every single bit of entertainment on a cruise ship is supposed to appeal to every single person, you know? There's a reason there's a huge variety on the ship, there's something here for everyone and I don't expect to love everything. I spent some time on the balcony last night enjoying the jazz music from Central Park. They had a lot of love going and lots of applause every time they finish a set and they were outstanding. I woke up with a scratchy throat and my voice is a croak. I have had a scratchy throat most mornings so far this week and then it goes away pretty soon after I get up. I think I may have some allergies going. We are in Labadee and I'm getting ready to go out and look around for a little while but I won't last very long I'm sure. I do really enjoy watching the zip liners go though. It is a gorgeous day.

  10. I was really surprised about having to cancel the night before dinner. It just started with our cruise. I don’t think it will last! Today, we had a wonderful breakfast on our balcony that started with a hiccup. It rained last night which left our balcony pretty much flooded. MJ had the room steward clear the water pretty darn good. We went to the monkey and sloth excursion today. Had drizzle rain the whole time, but with a nice temperature, it turned out good. It’s not been a sunny trip so far, but nice temperatures! Tonight we eat at 150 then the ice show. Our room holds the eight of us well, especially to play games as a family. MJ really shines handling a large crowd. We have done tons of laundry every day. Our room steward has been personable and does the room well.

  11. Last one before we enter the “dark zone” (no internet ) The Captain made a quick decision to visit Antarctica first before the Falklands. He has an excellent talk on how and why the decision was made. Short course: We need to race to Antarctica quickly to miss some terrible weather. The theatre was packed for his talk. More importantly two of the questions allowed him to show his humorous side: When asked “Celebrity is slightly ahead of us on the way to Antarctica … are you coordinating the Drake Passage route decisions with them?” Captain Stig replied: “I don’t care what Celebrity is doing. And by the way, Celebrity took two tug boats to get in and out of Buenos Aires” When asked “For those of us who are new to cruising, what is the safest and calmest place on the boat?” Captain Stig replied: “Madame this is not a boat. A boat is what you look for when the ship sinks.” “The safest place is my cabin and the calmest place is deck 4 mid ship.”

  12. JAN 06 Late Seating is the MDR is the better time on this cruise. Dancing before dinner is abundant and the after dinner shows timing works out really well. Early Seating (in the MDR) is a zoo. The R BAR is packed by 5:00 (as dinner is at 5:30). Everyone has the drinks package and they want their pre-dinner drink. No fist fights at the R BAR yet, but they still have 246 days. R BAR is empty by 5:40. Lots of room on the dance floor. The bartenders have lots of time and they are much more relaxed. The classical guitarist is excellent. They are typically difficult to dance to, but not this one. We will strike up a conversation with him to “order up” some foxtrots and rumbas. There is Stowaway Piano Player on board. We have already had one “drive by” Swing dance (to Crocodile Rock), and we will actively seek him out. He takes requests. There is a Strings Trio with relaxing classical music. They are quite good. We are debating if anything is “danceable”. We might have to dust off a very old waltz (we have not waltzed in years). Clear the dance floor … this might get messy. It is still very early, but the theatre entrainment has been top tier so far. 2 shows and 2 . Drawing on local talent will provide lots of options over the 274 days. RCL appears to be doing their homework. We have only had 3 days on board, but the Social Media personalities have been far less annoying than we anticipated. They are not hogging the dance floor nor being too distracting with “staged” recording. However, we have only had 2 days on board. Watch this space … The pace (so far) has been very hectic. Afternoon naps are a must. Even the sea days are busy. Buenos Aires is a little scary. Lots of notifications of being careful about thieves and scams (from RC, locals and passengers). The Argentine economy is in very big trouble and it is very noticeable. We are glad that we paid for the RC excursions (and do not mind paying the premium). We have heard of one stolen phone and one stolen purse from passengers just in Buenos Aires alone. Chops was empty on night 2 (only 4 other tables occupied in Chops over the 2 hours we were there). Very easy to get a window seat AND we got to watch a very tight and interesting sail away. As we left the Schooner Bar (after Chops Dinner) the sun was just setting. The pianist paused, looked out across the water at Buenos Aires skyline and switched to “Someone to Watchout over Me”. After he finished, I asked him if he thought about playing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”. He said that was his first thought, but it was a little “too cliche”. I think he made a great choice. It was a beautiful, and tender moment (one that is easier, for some reason, to find on a cruise ship). You have to be always looking for these moments, but you typically do not need to wait long. Do not spread this around (or the future segments will get totally booked). I am investigating future segments. D+ and tagging along on the UWC is (so far) a great deal. Curt from Canada

  16. JAN 12 We arrived in Antarctica quite early in the morning. Captain Stig delivered!!! Lots to talk about with his course and itinerary change. He gave a brilliant and funny talk as we were entering the Drake Passage. AND Elon appears to have delivered too. Starlink was 118 Down and 9 Up. Geez … we are at the bottom of the world. The Drake Passage was rough (between 25ft to 30ft waves), but nothing really too bad. If you stayed mid ship, it was “drunken walk” time. The theatre was bad (right at the front of the ship), so I skipped an enrichment lecture, and laid down for a nap. My soulmate felt no ill affects at all. They, obviously, cancelled the production show, and it was held the next night instead. Deck 12 (the walking track) and Deck 5 (outside promenade) were closed for the entire passage Slept like a baby last night (and I do not sleep well typically). The Drake rocked us all night long … (sounds like a song title from the early 70s ). The bars were not as busy yesterday (but it was still difficult to find a seat in the Centrum before the first seating). The dance floor was a little too difficult to manage … so we sat the night out. There was much anticipation for this … and, obviously, everyone is very excited. Curt from Canada

  17. JAN 07 A sea day (Day 3), we went to an Enrichment lecture (they have one every day … today they have two), ran to lunch, skipped a dance class on 70s dancing (this upsets us ), explored a little bit, got in our Espresso Nap, dressed for Formal night, “chased” dance music, ate in the MDR and watch the best Broadway review show at sea before crashing into bed. It really was non-stop. We will try to take it easier today. Breakfast has been exactly the same as usual, and lunch has been very disappointing. I would say the MDR is very hit and miss. Which is exactly our experience on other ships. For Formal Night … My soulmate was, by far, the prettiest woman on the ship. The Formal Night really was a formal night. 80% of the passengers are in suits (and 30% of them are in tuxes/ballgowns/cocktail dresses). All of the bands (except the strings) are danceable. The “Caribbean” band is singing 50s, 60s and 70s music. The house band is very good and once early seating is finished the dance floor gets packed. The orchestra is a 9 piece and they are excellent. There are 5 principle singers and each one of them are as good or better than the best on other ships. They set a very high bar for the theatre entertainment. No dancers yet. We may be a dancer free zone for this segment. Watch this space … I had my third Filet Mignon in 3 days (research ). The first night was the best Filet Mignon i have had at se), but it was an aberration … Chops was good, but it was just Chops. Second night MDR filet was good, but not outstanding. We love dancing with the Stowaway Piano Guy … best dances yet (in an odd venue, but we could care less). Dancing is possible in the Schooner Bar … longer story. We danced too much last night and we are really feeling old today. This might be a “maintenance”day. Curt from Canada

  18. I'm sure that's exactly what the drama queens/kings are hoping for. Then they can claim that they're being harrassed/penalized for "revealing the truth". Royal's best tactic is to ignore them entirely.

  20. The worst thing to ever happen to this World was the creation of the original iPhone. Its creation as the first true “smart phone” allowed for the proliferation of social media which then became miniaturized in the form of apps and the rest is pathetic history. It produced a lost generation who has no social skills because they grew up and live in their phones.

  21. There have been 4 periods of rain today. The last one was a downpour. I was in a packed Crown Lounge, watching pier runners. I felt so bad for everyone. The door to outside isn't working, so nobody can access the other tables outside. This lounge can barely hold 25 people. Ellington is used for the nightclub but dead in the daytime. So people are taking snacks and going there. We ate at the WJ. The had a stir fry in either veggies, chicken or beef. I got that and it was good but fatty. My mother got a burger and my brother got 3 full plates. i went back to the room and napped for an hour. We have evening service so we left the room around 4:30 so he can clean......they played cards on the pool deck. I wanted no parts of that . I chatted with Susan and Pete from Vancouver about Celebrity cruises and how uncouth Royal is in comparison . Oh so we were in the room when the person delivered the C&A sweet amenity. My mother answered the door and was like we don't want that, we didn't order room service. I can out of the bathroom and thanked the confused crew member. I love my mother but she is a mess.

  34. Woke up slightly miffed that i have to leave the ship. Went to gold for breakfast but felt it wasn't complete without cafetwo70's royal egg muffin. Debarkation was smooth and the concierge sent us on our way off the ship. Though i feel that priority boarding was a lot more impactful than debarkation. Now to the things i really liked the most in sky class: 1) Priority boarding - really a huge time saver, just for this alone, i think it's worth considering upgrading to at least sky class. Having the whole ship to yourself and being able to book activities first made the biggest impact right from the start. 2) Complimentary wifi - one of the reasons we needed it was my dad still had some assignments to do and the wifi was essential. For me it was a huge bonus to just chat with friends and to show off how much better my life was on the ship. Though i think it isn't necessary, it made things that much better in enjoying the trip. 3) Suite lounge - loved the happy hour cocktails though i didn't use it that much. Consumed maybe around 8 drinks in total at the lounge over 3 nights. To me the drink package isn't really worth it as i dont't drink that much, so having the lounge for some evening drinks was perfect for my needs. 4) Suite dining - the dining options for suite guests was really good and the tenderloin was comparable to chops. Also having a more private location without the crowding was a huge plus. Not sure how i'm going to get used to the good old MDR now. Other perks such as room service and double room cleaning, didn't feel like too much of a big deal this trip since there were no kids making a mess and it was a sky balcony room, no dining table to put stuff. I wish the room was bigger but that would have probably raised the price by quite a bit. Really glad i won the RUB and got to try what the suite life ia like. Any future cruise i'm going to be praying hard for that royal up.

  38. Half time report on golf cart. To check it out, don’t follow their directions, but take the shore excursion exit. They are located around the corner from that. Red shirt golf carts. We got the new 6 seater golf cart. They will hold your cart for two and half hours from docking time. No paying before. Now, we paid $120 for the day. Much cheaper options. We walked the last time, and I’m a walker, and found it tiring. We drove around and parked at Crazy Lobster, where chairs and a drink is free. There’s a small swimming area and lots of shopping. We came back to the ship for lunch. Had to park back at Red shirts. Next crew just headed back out on the cart. For the price, would be a lot cheaper to take a taxi. Would I rent again, no, but fun one time. There’s just nothing to see here. My son’s snorkeling was canceled when they showed. They said rough waters, but it’s hot, sunny and no waves. Thinking not enough people paid for excursion. Genie rebooked them for Cozumel. Perk of having a genie!

  41. JAN 09 Patagonia This ended up being one of our favourite tours in a long time. The Welsh traditions are alive and well in a small enclave about 90 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. This part of Argentina is very dry (it really is very close to a desert … similar to southern France). However, the river that runs through Patagonia has created an “oasis” for agriculture to thrive and the Welsh who settled there created an extensive canal system that turned the valley into a lush green environment that supports a large community. Once the railway came in (late 1800s to early 1900s), the community “blossomed”. The Welsh traditions thrived and are being actively supported to this day. The food is excellent and extremely well priced. The Welsh tea was a highlight (as a Welsh choir helped elevate the experience). We highly recommended the trip to Patagonia if you can. 43. I think you might be underestimating the redundant safety measures of Crown's Edge and the company's general risk assessment. Nothing is perfect, so I'm not debating that there's a chance, but I think accidental deaths resulting from dumb decisions as opposed to a regulated harness system are not anywhere the same.

  44. Not a stupid question at all! So the way a slot pull works is, you get a group together ahead of time, like 20 people. Everybody meets in the casino at an appointed time and we all contribute $20. Then you take all of that money and you put it into one slot machine at one time. So if you have $400 from your group, you just shove that whole $400 into the slot machine at one time. Then you all take turns pressing the button and watching the slots turn. You go through the whole roster so that everybody gets a turn. Once you've gone through the whole roster you look and see where your money is. If it's all gone then you're done. If there's a ton of money sitting there you take a vote as to whether to cash out and distribute the money among each other or keep going. So you might cash out and distribute the money or you might go through the roster all over again but generally you keep playing until the money is all gone, or you have won enough to make it worthwhile to cash out and distribute among your 20 people does that make sense? Generally these things end up taking about an hour because of course you win and lose and you win and lose you go up and down just enough to stretch things out for a long time. Most of the time everybody walks away with nothing, but we've had a really fun hour and gotten to know each other. Sometimes we go home with a few dollars. Sometimes you go home with more than you started with! You just never know. But it's mostly about having fun. There's a lot of cheering and clapping involved and we get to know each other's names and we get to spend about an hour socializing.

  45. one of my favorites was the Tik Tok poster who, on 2 different occasions posted the following reports. 1. Pinnacle members were treated to an evening viewing the Northern lights while all other passengers were not permitted on the outside decks (mind you this was in the fort week and the ship was off the eastern coast of Brazil, south of the equator) 1. Pinnacle members were "given" upgraded accommodations that other cruises were not permitted to book. The "reporter" used photos of an Oasis class CL suite photo for the Pinnacles and a standard inside room stock photograph for the others. Let us not forget all the drunken swingers and nightly orgies on board as reported by many......................

  47. The life of a social media influencer. Do something many can't do so you can say "see, look what I did" then complain about it since complaints get more traffic than compliments.

  48. I would call them about this. Same thing happened to us where we booked a jr suite GTY on a casino comp and when the Royal Up offer came in it was for cabins in lower categories than what we booked for. We called and it was a good thing we did. Somehow the reservation in their system was messed up but when we called everything got straightened out. Next Royal Up offers we received were for categories above.

  50. Day 3 Cozumel The plan for today is my brother has snuba and my mother and I will go walk the port until he is done and we get lunch. I am in the Crown Lounge which is fairly empty, eating a breakfast of chocolate croissants and fruit. There is no OJ. I want to back track a little. My mother might be the worst. She has no respect for us or anyone. We have know this but it was insane to watch. First she doesn't pay attention to anything. Despite being on this ship before, she knows where nothing is. She didn't realize Jamie's was in the WJ. But she walks with such confidence . We get to Jamie's and we have a very nice server who welcomes us and goes over the menu for the newbies. Every time he delivers something, she says "what's that?" After the 5th time I asked how was her memory and she said she didn't listen to nothing he was saying . She does this everywhere we go and we have to explain things to her. I think it is rude, add this to her constant talking, lack of proper bathroom etiquette and other bad habits......mean we will not sail in a room with her again. . She also claimed to be independent but won't go nowhere without one of us. After Jamie's we went to the casino and my mom won $100 and was over the moon. She barely gambles so she thought it was everything. There was a big thing because a lady claims she went to the bathroom and left $8 in a machine. Another lady sat down and started playing, the other lady called crew over and threatened to beat that lady's @$$. This lady tried to apologize but she couldn't confirm if there was actually money. But this lady kept requesting her $8. It went on for like 30min. My mother heard the loud talking and made up a scenario in her head.....which involved cheating lovers We had MTD and got our same waiters because we tipped the first night, they requested we be sat in their section. French night is my least favorite menu. My brother got escargot again and the roasted chicken. I got the beef tenderloin. My mother got the chicken and a Ceasars salad. She likes oil and vinegar. Last time she didn't eat the croutons, Nelson our waiter, asked if she would like them removed. But she wasn't listening and just stared ahead, I tried to repeat what he said, it didn't register until after the salad arrived and she mentioned she shouldn't have gotten croutons . After dinner I was tired so I went back to the room and got ready for bed. I had the worst sleep, since my brother took the higher bed, she was next to me snoring. Then the stupid balcony door staying open all night. I woke up congested. I took my supplements and vitamins, so I feel a little better. Stray observations... There are a ton of tiny smalls, that are everywhere being tiny smalls. Diamond members are bringing non-diamond members to the lounge. WJ is only open on one side for dinner. The price for JR is $14.99+grats, which is almost $18. It is not worth that price. They have aggressively been trying to sell specialty dining. We were told we could D+ bogo up until day 4. Ymmv.
