Anniversary Tales – Episode XXI: From Galaxy’s Edge to the Wondrous Seas – WN 7/23/23 – 7/30/23

July2023Blogpic.jpg.f608dcfc89f9b203f78406cc61ad5578.jpg

“My love for you is a puzzle… for which I have no answers. I can't control it… and now I don't care. I truly, deeply love you.” — Padmé Amidala

For those of you who follow my blogs, you will know by now that we always celebrate our anniversary on a cruise whenever possible. This year is no exception. The choice of ship was easy this year, it’s one that we have wanted to sail for a while but just haven’t gotten around to it.

In planning for this trip, we were going to do our usual, fly in one day ahead, stay at the Hyatt Regency at MCO, head to PC the next day. What can I say? We are creatures of habit. However, since Wonder of the Seas sails out of Port Canaveral, and you all know that Hubby loves one thing as much as I love cruising, he suggested that we go a few days early to do this one thing first.

The conversation went something like this:

Hubby: Where does this ship sail from?

Me: Port Canaveral, so we fly to Orlando.

Hubby: Oh, you know I’ve been wanting to go to Galaxy’s Edge?

Me: Pretending not to hear him….

Hubby: We should go a few days early and go to Galaxy’s Edge.

Me: Still pretending not to hear him since all I can hear at this point is, “Disney? Major planning, I know nothing about Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes, last time we went was 2017, Home Genie all the sudden has a whole lot of extra work to do.”

Hubby: What do you think?

Me: Are you sure want to go to Disney without the kids?

Kids: Go ahead. We don’t care about Star Wars.

Me: (Thinking in my head…Thanks kids, not the answer I wanted lol)

Hubby: Great! That saves us some money if we don’t need to take children.

Me: Great…May the Force be with me…

Who’s Going?

Just Hubby and I on this one! Yay!

Flight

Delta from DTW-MCO. Booked through Air2Sea again. Even though we are going 3 days early, I still like the ability to re-price before final payment. I have re-priced this flight down $150pp since the original booking. Once again, we had no trouble picking seats on our Delta app once we booked with Air2Sea.

Pre-Cruise Stay

If I had my pick, I would have stayed at the Conrad Orlando (that is more my scene) but since they announced their opening was delayed until Fall 2023, we had to find a Plan B.

We came to a compromise with the hotel. That’s what a solid marriage is all about right? What I really did not want was to stay anywhere near Disney, especially since we have no kids with us this time. I am not a Disney fan at all, and I wanted to steer clear of all things Disney related. Hubby on the other hand, is after the Early Theme Park entry and the perks of early access for Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane bookings.

I will see if you can all guess where we end up…

#teamDeck17 (now #teamDeck 18 on Wonder)! This is the way…

…unless we get RU lucky, then I might have to rename this blog to, “From Galaxy’s Edge to the Stars”, or, “From Galaxy’s Edge to the Dog House” since I never told Hubby about the RU lol

Pre-Cruise thoughts

-        I feel like I am the last person to sail Wonder of the Seas, but nevertheless, I am still really looking forward to exploring this different version of Oasis class.

-        This sailing has 3 sea days!!! Love it!

-        This is our first time sailing Royal out of PC. We have only ever sailed DCL out of PC.

-        Cannot wait to check out the new suites area on Wonder. That is probably what I am looking forward to the most, other than eating and relaxing.

-        We purchased a 3-night dining package this sailing. It’s our first time trying one of these things.

-        For another first, we are going to attempt to bring wine and Champagne onboard. This combined with our complimentary bottle from C&A, plus our D+ drink vouchers should make not having the drink package doable.

-        Once again, in the spirit of a live blog, please do not hesitate to ask any questions.  I will do my best to find out whatever I can for you.

-        When responding to a post with a series of pictures, please do not include the pictures in your reply.  It just makes for easier scrolling.

-        Lastly, I will try to post videos and stories on Instagram.  You can follow me @lovetocruise2002

Looking forward to yet another take on Wonder!

Very kind of you to appease Hubby's Disney fandom. We live close enough to the MK to hear the fireworks every night but haven't been to a park since pre-covid, lol.

If you happen to have some free time, head to Disney Springs for Gideon's Cookies and perhaps a nice meal.

Oh yeah, and it's disgustingly hot here but you already know that I'm sure.

Unfortunately for me, Hubby’s Star Wars fandom goes way beyond what is at Galaxy’s Edge. But he gets his obsessions and I get mine 😁

I get that! I would stay far away too!

Disney Springs is most definitely on the agenda, Star Wars merchandise is available there 🤦🏻‍♀️

I know all too well about the July/August heat in Florida. I was just telling my TA that I have never once been to Disney when it was not July/August/early September.

Not exactly why we go there (which isn't often), lol, but at least you can make him go where you want while there.

That is the only reason why we are going. I was not joking when I said that I would avoid all things Disney if I could. I am more of an Orlando Premium Outlets sort of a girl. That is also being squeezed into the agenda lol

I shudder to think of the Star Wars merch he might buy to get even with you. Hope you get it! 🤞

I will keep reminding him that his basement museum cannot hold any more. lol

Disney in July ... i will pray for you .. I'm getting swamp butt just thinking about it!

Yeah, just one day (Friday). I keep telling myself I can handle it. If not, I will find a store with air conditioning and tell Hubby to leave me there. He will happily do it!

Can't wait to hear the RU outcome!

I am seriously not getting my hopes up. Like @Neesa, I too think I have a RU problem. I cannot help but to "try it out". I have never won anything since this program started. I have actually never won anything period. This is why I don't gamble. This sailing is trickier cause I actually really want to sail in the loft on Wonder. It is slightly different from the rest. But can I really turn down an opportunity to try star on Wonder? We all know the answer to that lol.

I bid just above minimum and I figured that if I win, I can justify it by not having to pay the daily gratuities, I can cancel the dining and Evian package, and not have to bring on wine/champagne. And we will pick up the UDP and DBP. The cost of those two things alone is pretty much equivalent to the minimum bid. Hubby will disagree and say that the net result is that he will still have to pay more. I just told my TA that I refuse to get my hopes up. There are many people in the Royal Up FB group that report that their "pending" changed to unavailable a few days later. Either way, I will be quite content with the bid or the loft on Deck 18. I am just not sure how to break it to Hubby if by some dumb luck we actually win.

@Lovetocruise2002  Yay, I've been looking for this one! All our positive energy coming at you for the RUB win. Honestly why wouldn't they choose you? HELLO!! Anniversary, Special Couple D+ and only the 2 of you....a Genie's dream. I would choose you guys for sure. I'm looking forward to your amazing sailing...I took care of all the irritants for you a few weeks ago, lol! Have an amazing time and thanks for bringing us along.  🤩

Too bad the RU algorithm gods don't see any of that lol

I'm not sure I believe this, I think the bids get filtered by RUB and then sent to Royal somewhere closer the sailing. They blame RUB system so the disappointment doesn't fall with them. I don't know this it's just my gut, then they sift through & check how can they make the most money costing the least monies for their output. Make a loyal guest happy by looking at C & A status, then look for the least amount of people if only paying for the first two and finally using the celebration to finalize the decision. This is how I would do it anyway! Everyone wins, as I still think a Loyal to Royal guest would appreciate a RUB win so much more....no justification for my thoughts so.....just my scary mind.

It just makes fiscal sense, two people cost less in Star benefits then a family of 4. Genie gets a more relaxed cabin for the week.....If I'm a Genie I want YOU!!!

This thought has occurred to me as well. I wonder if the "RU algorithm" factors in the number of people in the reservation. For Symphony over NYE, I actually bid max on the ATS but we had the kids for that sailing, and we were booked in the CL. I know one of the ATS was won by RU but it obviously wasn't us. I wondered at the time if it was because we had 4 on the reservation. Then, about a month ago, I read in a post that many have not won bids with 4 on the reservation. This is all anecdotal of course but it does make me wonder.

There are at least two things I have learned in life that are now absolutes.

1.  Don't try to understand women.

2. Don't try to understand RU.

Happy Anniversary🥰

I am not a Star Wars fan per se, but Galaxy Edge was fun, the rest of Disney.......not so much. The Genie+ and lightning lanes are a cash grab that sucks but hopefully things work out for you. For me it was a lot of planning to get things done and not a lot of reward.

As far as RUB, I am 2/2 on minimum bids but this is based off of being solo for one and only 2 pax for the other. So, there might be something to the whole not getting it if you are 4+ in a room. I wish you all the luck.......fingers, toes, and eyes crossed.

I love all the Wonder blogs; it has been like a snowflake with none of the adventures being alike at all. I am 193 days from sailing on her and of course I will be blogging my adventures.

Agreed. Not sure what I'm going to do when there's a big gap in between them. We don't go again for 249 days but then have 3 relatively close together.

Total cash grab! And yes, I have spent a lot of timing researching tips and info the Individual Lightning Lanes and Genie+. It took me a while to figure out the difference between the two of them lol

So, I will try to be as transparent as possible about this. We were booked in the Crown Loft. I have been watching Star on this ship for quite some time and the prices for Star on this ship are nuts compared to other Oasis class ships. For two people, I never saw the per person price drop below $21K (that's per person). There is no way I would pay that amount! This one ATS (the one that I just won) came back after final payment and the price just kept climbing on it. The last price I saw it going for was $30K per person. I don't know where Royal is going with the crazy prices on Wonder.

Anyway, I got the RU bid at 59 days out as I stated earlier. I wasn't too keen on leaving the Crown Loft (especially since it's just the two of us) but I cannot resist a RU so I thought I would bid just above minimum. I used the UDP and DBP to guide me. The UDP was $679.64 for two, and the DBP was $1255.24 for two of us. That's a total of $1934.88. Per person, that put us at $967.44. Since I am Asian, and we like "8s", I figured I would round it up to $980 for some luck lol. That's how I came up with my bid.

I won't pretend to understand RU ever, and I honestly never thought I would get this one. Especially not with a low bid (the needle barely moved on the scale). I am beyond excited and I think we got a pretty good deal considering that I am paying about $30K less than the lowest total price I ever saw this suite at (if booked direct). Is it a good deal for Star in general? No way. But on this ship, I'd say it's decent.

I am thanking my lucky stars as I no longer have to go on the hunt for water, and Hubby was actually pretty excited too when I told him. He said it saves him a trip to a liquor store in Orlando! And he is excited that he can now do laundry again to his heart's content. That will be helpful since we have some Orlando days before the cruise.

I know if we win I'll be cancelling my interiors on Wonder and coming back here for a lesson on Star Class. 😁

Yes, I'd believe you, and you're better off. I only buy tickets when my wife sees on the news that the jackpot is some ungodly number and asks me to buy them when I'm running to the store.

I gambled when I was younger and am fairly knowledgeable in a few areas (making buying lottery tickets even worse) but it lost its appeal to me over time. I used to play low stakes BJ on cruises for short periods of time if my wife wanted a nap or another hour in the Solarium and I was tired of lounging but haven't even done that in a long time.

Now I often go find a between-meal snack in those situations... not sure which vice is unhealthier. 🤔
