HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone !!!   🥳  🍾  🎉

Starting the blog today to get a head start! We set sail in 6 days!  🚢  🏝️  🌞

We’ve come full circle… Wonder to Wonder! Our very first cruise was our honeymoon cruise on the Disney Wonder back in 2004. That’s when we were infected with the cruise bug! Disney set the bar really high right off the bat, but Royal has never disappointed us! Oh, and the us/our/we refers to me (John) and my wife (Christine)!

The how and why? We had originally booked this cruise as a Harmony sailing while onboard Oasis (NextCruise) back in OCT 2021. Harmony apparently wasn’t in the stars once again for us (detail to follow)! We were so excited when it was announced that Wonder was redeploying to Port Canaveral and we were given the option to swap ships. Wonder for the price of Harmony… no complaints here!  😎

Harmony has been so elusive. That’s twice we were bumped/moved! We had initially booked her back in JUN 2019 (APR 2021 sailing), but then Royal cancelled her APR 2021 sailings as they planned on moving up her 5-year maintenance drydock at that time. We chose the option to switch to Symphony, but everyone knows the rest of the sad story… that cruise became a Covid casualty. One day we’ll actually sail on Harmony… and Symphony for that matter.

On this cruise, we’re sailing once again with my wife’s childhood friend. She grew up here on Long Island and relocated to Florida almost 30 years ago (has long lost the NY/LI accent! 😆). She joined us on our Allure (MAY 2019) and Odyssey (FEB 2022) sailings. This time, my wife’s uncle and GF will also be joining us! We sailed with him on Explorer (OCT 2013) and Liberty (OCT 2015).

We’re so excited! This will be an 8-night sailing that includes stops at both PDCC and Labadee! We always wanted to sail an itinerary that hits both properties!

Time for some trip details…

Cruise Details:

  • Wonder of the Seas, 8-night, Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day itinerary
  • Out of Port Canaveral, FL
  • 1/7/23-1/15/23

Itinerary:

  • Day 1 (1/7):      Port Canaveral, FL  😃
  • Day 2 (1/8):      Nassau, Bahamas
  • Day 3 (1/9):      PDCC, Bahamas
  • Day 4 (1/10):    (* At Sea *)
  • Day 5 (1/11):    San Juan, PR
  • Day 6 (1/12):    Puerto Plata, DR
  • Day 7 (1/13):    Labadee, Haiti
  • Day 8 (1/14):    (* At Sea *)
  • Day 9 (1/15):    Port Canaveral, FL   😭

Cabin Details & General Plans/Stuff:

  • Central Park balcony (Deck 11, Starboard side)… our friend is in adjacent cabin (opening that balcony divider for sure!) and my wife’s uncle (booked after us) is 5 cabins down on same deck/side. We chose our location so that we are close to the musicians when they play in the evening down below in Central Park. We also wanted to stay away from the elevator towers.
  • Purchased the Key.
  • Selected Traditional Dining (5:30PM)… will verify as eDoc states 5:15PM (fine with us).
  • Purchased the Deluxe Beverage Package (expensive, but had to do it!).
  • Purchased the 3 Night Dining Package.
  • Purchased the Full Day Pass to Coco Beach Club (CocoCay).
  • Purchased “Authentic Countryside Experience” excursion in the Dominican Republic.
  • Purchased the Full-Day Beach Bed Rental in Labadee (story to follow!).
  • Nassau, Bahamas… plan is to play it by ear. We likely will not disembark.
  • San Juan, PR… plan is to disembark and self-tour. Our friend has been to San Juan so many times (flight attendant) and she wants to take us to a restaurant for lunch and explore Old San Juan.
  • Booked all major entertainment via Cruise Planner (365 Seasons on Ice, The Effectors II: Crash & Burn, Tap Factory, Voices, inTENse, Adult Comedy LIVE). Also booked “Royal Society of Puzzles” onboard activity (basic escape room).

Miscellaneous Stuff:

  • Flight on Southwest Airlines out of Islip/MacArthur Airport (ISP) on Long Island (NY) early on FRI (1/6/23) morning to Orlando (MCO). Our friend lives outside Orlando and will meet us at the airport. We’re then driving to the hotel as she has made reservations near the port (details to follow).
  • We may join a large group (our sailing’s FB group) at Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill on FRI afternoon for a pre-cruise Meet & Greet. Just need to discuss with our friend!
  • Our current plan is to use the shuttle service from the hotel to the port on SAT morning. Could change later – need to discuss this week!
  • We booked the 10:30-11:00 boarding window so we could board and take care of the specialty dining reservations, relax, explore, and start our vacation right away!  🍹 🧉 🍷

I think that’s it for the synopsis... now we just need to pack!

*** Please let me know if you have any questions or would like me to post pictures of something you are interested in... I'll do my best to keep up throughout the sailing!

Oh, did I say we're excited?  My phone Lock Screen since we disembarked Odyssey last FEB... 😆

  • JohnK6404 changed the title to We've Come Full Circle - Wonder to Wonder! 1/7/23-1/15/23 (8-Night)

We’re getting there!

Love to see this as it means we're sooo very close!  😎

The packing is mostly done. The dogs of course sense that something is up! They have been extra needy the last couple of nights. Now we need to pack all of their food/snacks/toys as we’ll be dropping them off at my sister’s house this evening. She really enjoys taking care of them while we’re away and we feel relieved that they’re in good hands with their “aunt and uncle”. We just fear that it won’t only be us putting on the dreaded cruise weight… she has been known to give them a few too many treats!  🤣

OK… have to post a couple of pics as usual! Jake (5) is the larger boy and Bella (10) is the smaller female. Christine insists on putting them in Christmas pajamas every year!  😱

BellaJake_02.thumb.JPG.6f6fa516e91343c10feac8aac5765b4f.JPGBellaJake_01.thumb.JPG.78c6222c51683851d0cce33f5bdc079e.JPG

So, we’re getting up around 4:00 AM tomorrow morning... We’re meeting up with my wife’s uncle and GF at the airport to make our 7:15 AM flight out of Long Island Islip/Macarthur (ISP) to Orlando (MCO). It’s only about 8 minutes or so from our house and we have a resident parking permit which is nice. Hopefully, no hiccups with Southwest tomorrow morning considering that holiday disaster! Usually, it’s a pleasure to fly out of Macarthur especially when you’re on one of the first flights of the day and the airport is still really quiet!

I'm off from work today (Christine had to work), so time for me to be productive before she adds more things to the to-do list!  😂

All checked in for our flight!  ✅

Health status questionnaire just completed on the app!  ✅

OK, just fussing with the app again for a few. I know it may not be accurate, but which evenings do you think are the formal evenings? Things that make you go hmmmmm....  🤔

I'll confirm once we board when we're making our specialty dining reservations. I know they won't be on sea days since they fall on Day 4 and Day 8 (last day).

The MDR menu, as posted, suggests (IMO) Day 2 (Nassau) and Day 6 (Dominican Republic). Day 2 is Beef Tenderloin, Day 3 is Prime Rib (CocoCay) and Day 6 is Lobster Tail...

So, our SW flight was delayed until 8:50am and we arrived at MCO at 11:25am. Could have been worse so we can’t complain!

Everyone waiting to board…

My wife is not a good flyer… she hates takeoffs and landings! So, her vacation officially began the moment we safely touched down in Orlando!  😀

We parted ways with my wife’s uncle and GF as they are heading to WDW for the day. Our friend scooped us up from the airport and we headed to the hotel to check in. We found out that we’re staying at the Marriott Residence Inn in Cape Canaveral (our friend booked the rooms). Nice for our purposes and so close to the port (practically across the street).

Our traveling group of 5 is now 6! Our friend was having a hard time finding someone to share her cabin, but over the last couple of weeks was able lock someone down that we also know! Starving, we all decided to go to Grills Seafood Deck & Tiki Bar right next to Terminal 1…

Indy was in port and apparently undergoing some work of some kind. A crane was loading multiple large wooden crates up to the top decks… of course no signs of passengers this afternoon so I’m assuming it must be temporarily out of service. She needs to depart to make room for Wonder tomorrow morning!  😆

Jewel and Mariner were also in the port today…

We’re back at the hotel… Christine is napping… playing the rest of the evening by ear!

Indy is going to get her maintenance done. I think she's off the books until mid-February.

DAY 1:  Embarkation Day (Port Canaveral)

Hi everyone! Wow, busy first day as usual! Everyone else has hit the hay except for me.

I’m sitting outside on our CP balcony and enjoying the light breeze that’s passing through Central Park. CP is still busy on this first evening. The musicians stopped playing less than an hour ago and many folks are still enjoying the park. I love the evening since the balconies are more private since there are no balcony lights. I do not see a single person out on their balcony across the park from us. Maybe many of them are going to the ballon drop.

Now back to this morning… we ate breakfast in the hotel and checked out. We booked the shuttle to the port through the hotel. It completes the loop of terminals on our side of the port. First we stopped at the Carnival terminal to drop folks off for the Mardi Gras, then we headed to Terminal 1 for our sailing. I believe the final drop off for this shuttle was the NCL terminal for the Escape.

Just some random shots heading to the terminal…

Let me tell you this was the easiest boarding we’ve ever had to date! The shuttle bus dropped us off and the baggage porters immediately greeted us as we exited the bus to collect the luggage. We arrived at the terminal about 20 minutes early around 10:10am. We have the Key and we also selected the earliest boarding window of 10:30am-11:00am.

At the entrance there was signage for the Key guests. We entered the “line” (only us, no other passengers ahead of us) and promptly went through security. Next, we were directed to lines dedicated to the Key for Royal’s check-in process which literally took about 3-4 minutes. The waiting area is adjacent to the check-in and we were told to walk to the Key waiting area. As we approached the area, they had already started boarding the suite and Key guests so they directed us to just walk right through and board. We never had to wait on a line and were on the ship and in the promenade at 10:20am before our scheduled boarding time! Literally, 10 minutes from baggage porter outside the shuttle bus to entering the Royal Promenade! Very good timing and very smooth process for sure!

We headed to the Key check-in desk located at Deck 4 of the MDR. Checked in and dropped off our carry-ons for delivery to our stateroom. The Key lunch was scheduled from 11:00am-1:30pm. Since we had some time to kill, we headed up to Central Park and stopped in Chops Grille to make our specialty dining package (3-night) reservations. So easy… no line once again. We booked Hooked for tonight, 150 Central Park for Day 4, and Giovanni’s for Day 5. We may book Izumi for lunch on the last day… we’ll see!

Our friends had to take care of something at Guest Services, so we all agreed to meet back at the MDR for the Key lunch at 11:30am. Lunch was the typical Key menu…

I ordered the Wild Mushroom soup, Angus Filet Mignon, and Mac & Cheese and Mashed Potatoes. For dessert, I ordered the cheesecake.

The soup was excellent as usual. The filet was good, but not as good as in the past. This is our third time with the Key. First, back in 2019 (Allure) when it was actually held in Chops. That of course was the best experience all around. Back in FEB 2022 (Odyssey) we had it for the first time in the MDR, but were wowed and felt it was just as good! This time, the filet was not quite hot enough (had cooled before serving)… the waiter brought broccoli instead of mashed potatoes and the mac & cheese was luke warm to cool. We believe the waiter was relatively new and there also was somewhat of a language barrier as he had difficulty understanding most of us. The cheesecake was excellent of course! Overall, most of the group’s food was good, but I was not overly impressed this time around.

During lunch, we completed 2 of the 3 steps for the muster drill. After we finished eating we headed to our muster stations to check in and complete the drill. We headed back to the Royal Promenade to walk round and kill time before the staterooms were ready. Around 1:00pm or so, the announcement was made and we headed back to our staterooms. Our Key carry-ons were on the bed waiting for us, but our luggage had not been delivered just yet. Eventually, they were delivered to our deck, but the bags were left about 10 cabins away down the hall.

Some random shots…

After unpacking we headed to the aft of the ship, had a few drinks from the Wipeout Bar, and waited for sail away. Some more shots from our vantage point including the port, Grill’s Restaurant (where we had lunch yesterday) and the Carnival Freedom, NCL Escape, and Disney Fantasy heading out… the Mardi Gras was on the other side and departed before us…

With the setting of the sun, I need to go to bed as it’s now 1:00am! The lights in CP just dimmed to the overnight light levels.

We’re getting up very early tomorrow… Christine is going to the gym with her friends. I may wander the ship and try to complete Day 1 tomorrow morning!

Have a good night if you’re still awake like me!  😆

Day 1:  Embarkation Day (cont.)

Good morning! Let me try to finish up with last evening…

After sail away, we walked around the Royal Promenade for a bit and then headed to Hooked for dinner. This is the first time any of us have been to Hooked since we’ve never sailed Symphony. I’ve heard mixed reviews, so I went in with realistic expectations. Also, like many of us that live off the coast, it’s going to be almost impossible to blow us away (our group lives either in Florida or Long Island). Everyone was still excited to try Hooked and have seafood this evening.

Some random shots including the menu…

The biscuits were okay… like a spicy Red Lobster cheese biscuit, but a little dry. We tried the Fresh-shucked Oysters, Shrimp Cocktail (huge shrimp!), and Maryland Crab Cake. The consensus was everything was excellent… the crab cake was decent, but not memorable.

I apologize for the grainy pics… it was sooo dark in there! We were teasing each other and extending our arms out trying to find one another!  😆

For the main course, some had the Whole 2 lb. Maine Lobster and the rest of us ordered the Captain’s Platter. We all enjoyed our food… did not blow us away, but we were happy with the meals. The sides were tasty… coleslaw, corn on the cob, lobster msc & cheese…

For dessert, we had the coconut cream pie and the decadent chocolate brownie… loved by all…

Thankfully, we did not schedule any shows last night! We were there for almost 2.5 hours! Our waiter was so busy… felt bad for him!

OK, have to wrap it up before Christine yells at me!

After dinner we all went our separate ways. Christine and I just walked around the ship including the promenade. We went to Cafe Promenade to investigate the Starbuck’s situation! The “house” coffee is still Lavazza (which is fine for us), but since we have the DBP, we wanted to go for the Starbuck’s which is included if purchased in the Cafe Promenade. We both grabbed venti cappuccinos.

Some final random pics including the Starbuck’s drink menu in the Cafe, as well as, the current onboard drink package offers on this sailing…

Wow that is the best-looking mac and cheese I have ever seen on any Royal ships.

i was thinking the same thing but also - damned by faint praise 🤣

thank you @JohnK6404 for these pics of hooked!! we are thinking of trying on symphony next month but we, too, have a real variety of excellent seafood places down here in NJ/by the beach, and i’m wondering if it may be money better well spent at 150CP 🤔

We dined at 150 CP back on Oasis… We’re going there this week, so I’ll give you our opinion the second time around.

If you are deciding between the two, I would skip Hooked and book 150 CP especially since excellent seafood restaurants are local to you too!

Day 2:  Nassau, Bahamas

We ordered in room service (complimentary/continental) this morning since my wife was motivated by our friends and headed down to the gym around 6:30am. I decided instead to walk round the ship and take shots of the pool deck, etc.

Day 2:  Nassau, Bahamas (cont.)

Quick post! Christine went back to the gym and I’m heading up to watch us dock at PDCC.

Pics of us docking in Nassau. I did a few screenshots of us coming in on the Nassau port cam… we’re coming in hot, LOL!

There were 5 ships in port (including us) when we arrived yesterday. Liberty OTS, Freedom OTS, NCL Escape, and 2 older Carnival ships. We pulled into port in reverse in front of Freedom (Liberty next to us).

Day 2:  Nassau, Bahamas (cont.)

Relaxing in a nice lounger under the palm trees at the Coco Beach Club right now… love this place!!!! I’ll touch on that when I catch up! While I have a few moments… yes, the WiFi package works on CocoCay!

We stayed onboard in Nassau, but the weather was great yesterday…

So, after watching us dock in Nassau, I grabbed a Starbuck’s Caramel Frappuccino (because we can with the DBP, lol!) and met my wife in the solarium. We grabbed one of the comfy loungers up front.

Christine was hungry and we had lunch in the Windjammer as soon as lunch was served (11:30am). Food was good as usual. No complaints!

After lunch, we met up with our friends and hung out by one of the pools and then moved to the solarium and the adjacent hot tub that cantilevers over the side of the ship for the remainder of the afternoon.

Tonight (last night as I type this) is the first of the formal evenings (Day 2). More later… time to jump in the infinity pool! 😎

Day 2:  Nassau, Bahamas (cont.)

Let’s see if I can finally wrap up yesterday!

Last evening was the first formal evening. Here is the new menu… “French Night”…

I had the Baked French Onion Soup, Roasted Beef Tenderloin, and the Crème Brûlée. All excellent! Everyone ordered the Beef Tenderloin which was so tender and delicious. The color is a little off in the pic of the Beef Tenderloin…

After dinner, we walked around the promenade for the usual formal photo ops. The ladies could not pass up taking a photo with Captain Henrik Loy (a.k.a. Captain Hottie according to my wife). I was a little late with my photo as they were walking away! I took a quick pic of the Captain, but promptly was chastised by a crew member! Funny story… my wife and MIL have been talking about him since he was the captain of Explorer when we sailed on her back in 2013! Christine was so excited when she found out he was the Captain… should I be worried this cruise? LOL!

Here are a few evening pics of CP from our balcony… the last is of the guitarist that has played each evening.

We all changed and headed to our first show of this sailing… inTENse in the Aqua Theater. Everyone really enjoyed the show. All of the Aqua Theater shows we’ve seen to date have been amazing! Photo dump coming… I can never get nice clear pics of the divers, so I left them out!

DAY 3:  Perfect Day Coco Cay (cont.)

We purchased the Coco Beach Club day passes for today. We REALLY loved it when we were here on Oasis back in 2021 and we wanted our friends and family to also experience the resort-style, laid back atmosphere. We do love kids, but we find families do not come to the beach club and it’s a more tranquil atmosphere for sure. It was amazing once again and everyone wants to come back this OCT when we return on Wonder. Thankfully, we grabbed the day passes for next OCT at just $88.99 during the Black Friday sale!

We were pleasantly surprised that it was not busy at all… almost the same as when we sailed Oasis at 35%! We were the only ship in port which of course helped! OK, I have to say it… it was a perfect day at Perfect Day! We can still hear Royal’s Coco Cay take on the Bill Withers song “Lovely Day” in our heads!

Prepare for the photo dump! LOL!

We had lunch reservations at 12:15pm and headed to the restaurant. Here are the menus:

They bring out the starters for everyone so there is no need to choose (sorry, forgot to take a pic). Most of us ordered the surf & turf… it’s not listed on the menu, but they will make it upon request.

The consensus was that the lobster tail (Caribbean lobster) was very good, but the Filet Mignon was amazing! I have to agree that the Filet is arguably the best you can get with Royal Caribbean! Better than the multiple filets we’ve had over the years at Chops, 150 Central Park, Chef’s Table, the MDR, etc… not sure how it compares to Coastal Kitchen. We all either went with the Bahamian Rum Soaked Cake or the Caramel & Chocolate Brownie… also delicious.

DAY 3:  Perfect Day Coco Cay (cont.)

Another really busy day! Let’s see what I can do to catch up!

After lunch in the beach club, we decided to walk the island. When you leave the beach club, they ask if you plan on returning and give you a bracelet. We walked around the island until we wound up at the entrance to Coco Cay. Here are some random pics including the Oasis Lagoon Pool. The pool was not nearly as crowded as the last time we were here. Of course we could not enter Thrill Waterpark.

We went back to Coco Beach Club, collected our belongings, and returned to the ship.

This evening, we had 150 Central Park for dinner. As usual, the service and food was excellent. I apologize for not taking pics of the menu and food. Just liked Hooked, they dimmed the lights a little too much to allow for decent photos. Some of us actually needed to use our phone flashlights to read the menu! Not sure why they have started this trend… I love ambiance, but this is ridiculous, LOL!

The internet has really been inconsistent/spotty in cabin and throughout the ship… slowing me down especially with uploads.

Heading to bed once again… have a great evening/morning!

DAY 3:  Perfect Day Coco Cay (con’t.)

Let me wrap up day 3 finally! We went to see Tap Factory (Energy Machine) this evening. IMHO, it’s worth seeing once if you’ve never seen one of these shows, but I think we’re done with the Tap Factory shows. We enjoyed the show much more on Odyssey since it was our first time, but we’ll likely skip them going forward. The show was almost identical - the only significant difference is that they added female performers to the show. Here are some pics from the show:

DAY 4:  * Sea Day *

Today is the first of 2 sea days on this sailing (Days 4 & 8). For breakfast, we headed to the Windjammer. We were impressed with the new and expanded design. It’s on deck 15 in the aft of the ship, but it now completely wraps around the perimeter of the Boardwalk. Definitely the largest on any Royal ship to date! The food was as expected with a nice variety to choose from.

After breakfast, we walked around the ship a bit and headed back to the Boardwalk neighborhood. Here are a few more random pics:

We attended the “Top Tier” event for Crown & Anchor members which included a high-wire performer from the Aqua Theater show. Thankfully, the clouds rolled in and out quickly.

Next they posted the C&A count for this sailing. They also awarded Pinnacle status to one couple. The top 4 cruisers onboard were recognized included one couple that led with 1,733 C&A points.

Many of the brass from the crew including the Cruise Director (Mike) and Capt. Henrik (a.k.a. Capt. Hottie according to Christine… @WAAAYTOOO, LOL! 😆) were there of course…

Afterward, we explored more and stopped by the Vue Bar and relaxed with our family/friends with a few drinks. Christine will hate that I posted this pic, but it shows the beautiful views from the portion of the bar that cantilevers over the edge of the ship. The Vue Bar is on deck 15, forward section, port side, right before the entrance to the Solarium.

We walked around and then headed to the aft of the ship on deck 5 (jogging track) to watch the wake for a bit. We then went back up and rode the Ultimate Abyss. Our friend caught this pic of us exiting the slide on deck 6.

loving the pictures!!

we also snagged beach club passes on the black friday sale for our next two sailings -- we loved coco cay when we went in december but we were there on odyssey with wonder in port as well and chill island felt crowded. looking forward to a less populated experience next month at the beach club (hopefully!)
