  1. After walking back to the hotel I had just under an hour to prepare for the first Royal Caribbean Blog Alaska Group Cruise event - a 5pm meet up that included pizza. Here I met several familiar online names and avatars but was able to put real names and faces to them.

  2. Chihuly Garden and Glass I booked this as a combo with the Space Needle online the day before. It had me select a time for the Space Needle but Chihuly was available to walk in anytime. During the purchasing process it appeared Chihuly by itself was sold out but it was available to book as a combo for $44 plus tax. The two are located right next to each other. I had printed my ticket at home and it was a simple matter of following the signs and going straight to have it scanned without needing to stop at any ticket office. I took a lot of photos and it's been hard to narrow it down. It's getting late and I'm tired so I just going to dump the photos in this post and give it more thought another day. Ticket scanned you are quickly presented with your first exhibit. There are eight interior areas and then the outdoor gardens. This next section is the "Sea Room". There is the main piece in the center with smaller pieces around the outside of the room, each with intricate details. This leads to a whimsical corridor with a number of glass pieces overhead. There were hundreds of pieces each with intricate detail. The next room was incredible. What struck me was the detail in all aspects of every piece. This leads to the boat room with two boats filled with more pieces. Next up is the Chandelier Room. Following this is the Macchia Forest. Through the indoor sections it was time to move outdoors. There is a "Glass House" that was closed on this day for a private event. It's been hard to narrow down the 200 photos to these which is already more than I should have added. It's just hard to capture and present it trying to do it justice without going overboard with photos.

  5. We arrived at the port at Coxen Hole on time and disembarked to singing and dancing in the pier that was damaged by the MSC Armonia a few weeks go. I’m amazed that ship didn’t suffer huge damage like the Part of the dock where it struck did...lots and lots of rocks around there. We worked our way through the small, controlled port area to the street where our excursion reps were waiting for us. We waited a few minutes until our driver, Mark arrived and took us to the SUV the company we booked with uses. My oldest has had a life goal to hang out with sloths. So, you google “sloths.” Daniel Johnson Monkey and Sloth Hangout will come up. It’s in Roatan! So, I booked it using Messenger to their Facebook page. There are several options that include island tours, snorkeling, shopping, sampling food and others. We chose the island tour and a stop at a popular local restaurant for some great food. Durin the island tour that included some history and stories about the island, we stopped for some street Food that included the local delicacy of fresh cut mango with salt, lime and vinegar. Woah....it was awesome! From there, we headed over to the monkey and sloth hangout, and waited a few minutes to be matched with a guide to take us to the animals. They are all there near a really nice snorkeling spot on the other side of the entrance where there were a male and female sloth entertaining people amidst several large cages containing spider monkeys and a couple of a couple species of parrots including the island bird the macaw parrot. The staff would pick up one of the sloths and place them on your shoulders. They immediately hug you and wrap their legs (with very long, sharp claws) around your waist. Be ready for a poking feeling...yes, they stop when they feel secure. I can only describe holding a sloth as being like holding a very sweet little baby with soft fur and a calm disposition. Sloths eat the leaves of the crecopia, a tropical tree. It has low nutritional value which cause the sloth like low metabolism. As a result of eating the leaves, sloths will consume some insects as a secondary part of their diet. Following our time at the Hangout, Mark took us to a shore side restaurant called Conch Fritters that tourists don’t frequent. I suppose it’s like going to a restaurant in the US called Hamburgers... It’s a beautiful setting with several menu options including the local beer, SalvaVida. The food is fresh and range from conch fritters to chicken fingers. I chose the coconut shrimp and had a fantastic meal. Soon, it was time to return to the ship where we boarded about 1:30 in the afternoon, local time which was 2 hours behind ship time. All on board was 4:30 pm, so we returned with time to spare. The excursion lasted about four and a half hours. After naps and dinner, we donned our flapper wear or fedora and headed to Deck 4 with our secret passes to the Prohibition Party hosted by the assistant activity manager who did a great job role playing the “proprietor” of the “tea” establishment. We had fun drinking our “tea,” eating snacks, dancing and listening to jazz. Overall, the day was one of the best I’ve had on a cruise. More pics and attempts at drunken time lapse coolness at @dunkelbier_jay...

  7. IT'S CRUISE DAY!!!! Visions of going out last night to take some night photos around Seattle had briefly danced in my head but the sleep deficit from getting up for a 6am flight had other plans and to bed I went. I've been assigned to bus#2 leaving the hotel at 10:00am for the transfer arranged with the group cruise. I just checked my son's flight and they are projecting an hour early arrival. He might actually beat me to the port! With nearly 3 hours to kill I've already had a bite at the hotel breakfast and re-packed my bags. Tick, tock, tick, tock.

  8. We rode the Monorail to the pre-cruise meetup. It is $2.50 and it took us to the Space Needle/Chihuly Gardens and Glass/The Museum of Pop Culture. We will visit those next week using the City Pass. It was nice seeing everyone in person but we were super tired from our pre-cruise lack of sleep and day of traveling. It's time get some shut eye so we are rested to explore the Explorer. My first impression of Seattle is that it is a very artistic city. I like it here.

  9. After we checked in we went to the Market which is a few blocks away from the hotel. It is a neat place but a little too chaotic for my liking. We pre-purchased City Passes which allow you to visit 5 attractions for a lower price, now $89. We went to the aquarium today. It is small but laid out nicely. It takes around an hour to check everything out. We were also going to do the harbor cruise today but the timing didn't work out for us. We have 9 days to use the passes so we will add it to the list of things to do after the cruise.

  11. Cruising today! Had some time to kill at the Egan Center so wanted to provide information about trace l from Anchorage to Seward. We purchased train tickets for the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seward through Royal Caribbean for $125/pp. We we were told to report to the Egan Center in downtown Alaska by 11:30 AM and that they open at 8:00 AM. We decided to get here early because we thought we could get our train seats since they are 'first come, first serve". This was not accurate! We arrived at the Egan Center around 8:30 and were one of the first one's there. Signs direct you to a large room where they take care of checking your luggage, check passports, Sail Pass and credit card. Since we were early we got through this pretty quick and was straightforward. We got train tickets #6 & 7, not sure if that's just so they know how many altogether OR if is used to prioritize seating...guess we'll see when we get to train depot. I was able to temporarily check my heavy backpack while we went around the corner to Kaladi Brothers for a latte and oatmeal cranberry cookie. It's two blocks away on the corner of G and 6th Ave. After my latte we went around the corner to check out a huge mural behind city hall. From Kaladi's walk across 6th on G and make a left right after City Hall. When you get to the parking lot look back over your right shoulder you'll see the mural which outlines the history of Alaska. Thanks go to Howard, our Uber driver from the hotel to the center, for telling us about the mural! We were back at the center by 9:30 and typing this as we wait for our 11:15 shuttle to the train depot. At the center they have stations to recharge devices, free wifi, water dispenser and tables and chairs where you can wait (and update your blog). The folks from RC and Alaska Railroad are here to answer questions and are really, really nice people! Next update will be from the ship!!

Need I mention that on Oasis or Harmony, you won't have to bundle up for the cruise. I just remember @Lovetocruise2002 looking very cold in those pictures! When I cruise, I just want to be warm! That alone is worth the extra $100 per person for Oasis!

  13. I grabbed some lunch and headed back for my turn at the Space Needle. It was about an hour in line snaking slowly up towards the elevator for the rise top the top. There is a security checkpoint you have to walk through but I had no issues with anything I had with me. This is the area near the elevators where I finally made it to after crawling along, inch by inch waiting for the one elevator to carry guests up and down to the top. Just prior to this point is a photo station. The photo is free to download. They take your picture against a gray background and later, in the gift shop you can choose one of six backdrops and have a link emailed to you to access your photo. This is included at no additional charge. Built in 1961 the building and elevator appear to be set in this era. It took just 400 days to building the Space Needle. They are renovating the upper observation deck, replacing wire 'cage' with glass panels for a better view. It's under construction now but mostly complete. Here is the elevator ride up and down. They have set up a display to compare the old caged feel versus the new glass panels they are installing. There used to be a knee wall where now the glass extends down to the floor for a much more open feeling with great views. The inside is being renovated as well. This is the line waiting to go back down. Not nearly as long a wait as it was going up. I'm very glad I did both Chihuly Glass and the Space Needle but I would choose an earlier reservation next time. The crowds seemed to be growing bigger as the afternoon progressed.

  14. Just walked around downtown Anchorage today. Our last stop was the Anchorage Museum. We could have spent a couple days there. Great exhibits, especially the one from the Smithsonian on the native people of Alaska! If you are in Anchorage I think this is a must see. We took an uber from the hotel to the visitor center at F and 4th. Took the Trolley Tour ($20 pp) that was 50 minutes. Stryker, our guide, was great. One fact we learned is that 25% of all small aircraft in the USA is in Anchorage! We went up to the airport where they can takeoff and land on land or sea. It was pretty busy! My wife got in 8,800 steps around town and we visited many shops and the museum. We got a picture with Balto, the sled dog and I added two "life" birds to my lifelist - the black-billed magpie and the mew gull which are pretty common around here but never make it to the east coast. We finished the day with dinner at Sea Galley at the recommendation of our morning uber driver. Plenty of food with the meal but not worth the $$. Would not go back! Getting ready for our train ride to Seward tomorrow and excited to get our first cruise started! Here are some pictures from today...... Oomingmak - The Qiviut Shop - the visitor center told us this was a must see. It was definitely the softest wool I've ever felt and I really wanted to help the natives that make the hats & scarves but nothing under $100! Balto the sled dog for whom the Disney movies was made A couple life-sized stuffed animals (not mounted by a taxidemtist). The moose can be had for just $7,999 And then there was this bear on the corner Some of the biggest flowers we've ever seen - must be all the sun and rain! And lastly, the magpie and mew gull

  15. Today, I followed my routine of waking up to catch the sunrise after grabbing coffee and croissant at Cafe Promenade. We turned south by Cancun, so good views were aft and to port. I went to the chairs next to the running track on deck five with my coffee. Whether the sunrise is spectacular or not, it’s my favorite time on board. I wrote that before, I think. We had no plans for Cozumel since previous trips always included a day at Nachi Cocom. *branch out* We shared the dock with Celebrity Equinox, and as we came alongside, I got an epic time lapse on my Instagram @dunkelbier_jay. We waited an hour or so and navigated the controlled area at the International Pier to the taxi area. About a third of Allure and half of Equinox were in line, so I turned left to the exit to the street. A taxi was sitting there ready across the street, and without setting the price before getting in, I know I was taken for a few bucks. The ride to our destination was $18 (for the five of us—> yeah, right —> I know it’s $8 to go to San Miguel from the taxi line)...Taking into account a tip and getting going in front of 6,328 others in line across the street, another few bucks was worth it. Our destination was La Cozumeleña, a breakfast spot about six blocks from the Forum shops that the cruise lines promote. It is a bakery/restaurant that I found on Trip Advisor. Upon walking in, we got the feeling you have when you walk into a biker bar in preppy clothes. It was fine and we were welcomed warmly by the staff with fresh sugary rolls and amazing cinnamon coffee to start. We each ordered items from the breakfast menu as well as the signature torta. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. After breakfast, we walked a couple blocks to the main coastal street in town and turned right dodging the aggressive store front employees as we weaved one block in and one block out searching for interesting things. We stopped at Cariloha...yes, we were suckered in, but the underwear is just that comfortable. We resisted the bed sheets. The socks are good too. One free when you buy three! SUCH a good deal. (No sarcasm) We ended up at Panchos Backyard where.... See my Instagram @dunkelbier_jay for random tequila flavored xylophone excitement. Many dollars later, we shopped our way out of the place...after all, it’s set up that way... ...found a taxi, and were navigating back to the International Pier in a taxi properly procured at 2/3 the cost of the previous. Good judgment was tequila’d out the door, so we missed out My Time Dining reservation ...they’ll seat you anyway... and skipped the headliner. There’s something about tequila... We retired around 9:30to rest up for the next port of Call, Roatan.

  16. T minus 2 days. Bags packed. Boarding pass printed. SetSail pass printed. Luggage tags ready. Check, check, check and check. I think I'm ready. Amazingly I don't feel like I forgotten anything, which means in about 10 hours at 35,000' I will remember exactly what I forgot. Such is cruising. For the flight to Seattle tomorrow I have a 6am departure. I had plenty of choices of flight times all day but I chose 6am so I could visit something in Seattle I've always wanted but haven't been able to yet. The Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit at the base of the Space Needle. I'm a sucker for blown glass so I'm looking forward to this as a pre-cruise excursion. I'm flying with Delta, my favorite airline since I am heavily vested in it's frequent flier program. At 13,500 Skymiles this may be the cheapest round trip flight I've booked using frequent flier miles. A direct flight was available departing later and arriving at nearly the same time but at several thousand more miles so I chose a connection in Salt Lake City given the early time of day plus day before cruise booking. Connections don't bother me since I've flown a bunch. Loyalty pays - I've been upgraded to first class on both segments. Not bad for an 'award' ticket. My son is joining me on this cruise flying in from the East coast. With a Friday to Friday cruise itinerary it meant an extra day of vacation for him so another day on top of that to fly in the day before was a problem. He doesn't get that much time off at this point in his career. He elected to fly in the day off the cruise, something I tend to avoid. Flying from the East coast the time change is working in his favor. Fingers crossed. I booked my cruise through MEI Travel and added the official hotel for the Royal Caribbean Blog Group Cruise when it was offered oh so long ago. Time flies, it's almost cruise day! Shout out to Jacki York at MEI Travel for proactively checking each and every sale over several months to verify I had the best price. Our cabin on this cruise is an interior with virtual balcony. A full balcony cabin was nearly twice the price, per person of course. I did an Alaskan cruise last year on Celebrity with a balcony. One Alaska lesson I learned last year was that good excursions can be pricey. Alaska excursions are well worth the price in my opinion to experience Alaska however adding up the total cost of a vacation experience on my second Alaska cruise I chose to spend money favoring excursions that were my second choice from last year over the cabin so interior virtual balcony it is. Basically by booking an interior cabin we got our excursions 'included' compared to the cost of booking a balcony. Excursions this time around: Juneau Skagway (The description read much better when I booked it!) Victoria Booked during various sales it definitely pays to book excursions early and watch sales. Most of them have increased in price over the months since booking. I booked our excursions with enough time for us to self explore before or after as weather permits. Alaska here we come! With that it's time to close my laptop and pack it, else I might forget it in the morning at oh-dark-early when my ride arrives to carry me to the airport.

  17. I know there will already be great live blogs from Matt and Twangster but I thought I would add my daily 2 cents since I am doing some different excursions at the ports. I am arriving in Seattle the day before the cruise and flying out the day after so I got a City Pass to check out some of what Seattle has to offer. Tomorrow I plan on going to the aquarium and doing the harbor cruise. I am traveling with my 19 year old niece and figure those things will be far more interesting to her before we get on a big ship and possibly see some of the wildlife during the cruise. I will be writing from my phone so please excuse all the typos that are sure to take place and be missed. I can't wait to share my experience with you.

  18. I've been waiting for a while. Sometimes, I wondered if I would ever get there. Watching everything about the Symphony launching while I was stuck doing a lot of work that I hate and working through the difficulties of life in miserable Scottish weather. Finally, it is nearly here. 10 days until I board the Symphony of the Seas!!!!!! I am Joe. I have enjoyed following Royal Caribbean Blog for a while now and have been posting on the forum for around a year now. This is my first time doing a LIVE blog, having been inspired by CruiseLifeRick when he did his CC LIVE thread on Symphony's inaugural in April. I am also going LIVE on CC, but ultimately would love to share my adventures with the RC Blog as well, especially as many of you are US based and may wish to hear about either the Med or Symphony herself when she arrives to Miami in November. I come to you from Glasgow, Scotland, a city well known for it's friendliness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpnUurJvGWs (disclaimer: Don't watch if you have no sense of humor, take things too literally or hate any use of strong language). This will be my 13th & 14th cruise; my 6th & 7th Oasis Class cruise and 2nd B2B. This will also be my 5th & 6th cruise around the Med and my 4th & 5th from Barcelona. There will be one first - my first time on Symphony! Having sailed all 3 sister ships, I am very excited to see everything new that Symphony will have to offer. I am hoping to try both Playmakers (wings!) and El Loco Fresh which are new dining venues on SY. Please give any other suggestions of things to try. All welcome. I'll be back with more soon!

    Which ship?

I'm waiting to see if Oasis gets the dry slides "The Abyss" at the aft of the ship. I'm secretly hoping it doesn't, nor Allure. Boardwalk balconies are much more enjoyable in my opinion without the Abyss. I preferred the shows on Oasis over Allure, except Cats. I had better service on Allure but only marginally better. Those types of small subtleties could be long gone depending on crew rotations. The simple truth is all Oasis class are great. For your first, there is nothing wrong with OA or AL. Why pay a premium? Port Everglades is very easy and convenient as a fly in port. Miami is a close second but with the new terminal coming it may edge out Port Everglades. Port Canaveral has the longer transfer distance as the only small downside for fly in guests. You just have to watch flight times and add a small amount to the budget to compensate in Canaveral but you might be able to make that up in cheaper airfare. I had sailed on all OA class and come October when I sail SY I'll claim that title again, but I'm booked on Oasis for 14 nights in 2019. I don't need a robot bar or Wow bands and my boardwalk balcony will have unobstructed aft views.

    Which ship?

There is speculation on other boards that they will add Wonderland and turn Giovanni's into Jamie's. Pure speculation at this point. As far as I know, zero info has been released, other than that Amplified schedule that Matt posted a while back. It would also look more refreshed than Allure even if they didn't change any restaurants. Personally, I do not care for the changes coming to Coco Cay. If I want an amusement park, I would go to Disney World and the water parks there. But many are very excited for it so that might be a deciding factor for you. However, if you went with an itinerary that has Coco Cay, then you may end up spending a lot more, which makes your difference between ships even greater. My views are biased because 90% of the time, the ship is always my destination first and foremost. This will change in about 10 years when we start doing the more exotic destinations. The main show on Oasis is Cats, and Harmony is Grease. Allure has Mama Mia, and Symphony has Hairspray. However, Indy also shows Grease, I think. IMO, the Aqua Theater shows and Ice shows are all pretty similar. Symphony prices are crazy. I won't even take my kids on it. Way too much for 4 people. So really, I would say you should narrow it down to Harmony vs. Oasis. While Allure is great, she will be heading into dry dock by that point and if she is more than Oasis, I would say Oasis is better. At the moment, I am booked on the March 15th sailing. Our March break schedules won't be out until next spring but they are fairly predictable from year to year. If I am wrong, then we will change it and I will take the hit on the change fee. Hope I did not make it a lot more confusing for you ?

  22. So I'm sitting in the Baltimore cruise terminal waiting for someone to cancel on the Grandeur which is overbooked so I'm assigned a cabin and allowed to board. We purchased 2 guaranteed cabins and a reserved cabin in a group. One guaranteed cabin assigned a room number weeks ago. The other wasn't assigned and confirmed still "guaranteed" as late as 2 days before sail date. During check in were notified of an overbooked cruise and we need to wait for a cancellation (not just a no show) in order to to get cabin. RC has our $ for months. There were dozens of avail cabins in all categories when we booked. Just tried to save couple bucks with "guarantee". To say we're frustrated is an amazing understatement. How often does this happen? What's the policy on guarantee and overbooked? Is this how RC treats passengers? New to this experience after a dozen cruises on other lines. SSSSSSSS

    Customs for dummies?!?!

@Pooch --what Kayla said. But also know that depending upon the port, there may not even be a customs form. On our Adventure cruise out of Bayonne, NJ I thought the cabin steward forgot to leave us the form. I went to guest services and was told they did away with it last November. On the other hand, when flying into Philly from Jamaica we were given the form to complete. FYI, we did see the sniffing dogs in Bayonne. They are not just for drugs---they are also looking for food. Snacks in packaged bags are fine, but do NOT try to bring in and fruits, vegetables, meats etc. I'm pretty sure this holds true at every port.

    Which ship?

This is a really tough call and like others say you really can't go wrong. I think it comes down to how bad you want to go Wonderland and the Bionic bar. One other factor is the Great Abyss slide. If you have a 17 year old that can be quite a draw. Another thing to factor in is that Oasis is getting a refurbishment as @Lovetocruise2002 mentioned and it may have even have some features none of the other ships have. With the refurbishments in mind I would say to pick between Oasis and Harmony!

I'm also thinking Oasis or Harmony in March 2020 but spring break dates won't be out until November. Our Spring Break are usually either the 3rd or 4th week of March and I'm hoping for the 3rd week. Oasis for $150 less per person is very appealing as that money can go a long way towards shore excursions, etc. Adding waterslides is a huge bonus for us but not having the Ultimate Abyss could be a dealbreaker for DD7. To make Cococay "worth it" for me, I'd feel like I need to pay for the water park which could be expensive for my family of 6. I've seen prices all over but I assume that during spring break it would be on the more expensive side. The plus side is that there is no wrong decision!
    1 point
  42. Huge deciding factor....Oasis will be just out of a major revitalization in March 2020. She'll be done November 2019. And she's the cheapest from your prices listed above. Also, easier to fly and leave from MIA than PC. I'm booked on her in March 2020 for those exact reasons.

I've stayed on Deck 4 right by the R Bar and loved that location! Maybe a little noise during the day but not much at night. The rooms are nice with huge windows - I'd recommend staying there! Plus, easy to swing by the R Bar for a quick drink while getting ready for dinner.

    Introduce yourself!

Hello everyone! My name is Alex and I'm from King of Prussia, PA (Philly metro area). I have been lurking here for about a month now (and have a 3 page compilation of tips/ideas gathered in google drive to prove it) but decided that I should probably finally create an account and introduce myself. I will be going on Allure in May of 2019 and because I LOVE to plan and research, I have already started plotting and reserving. This is my first cruise as an adult, but I have been on 2 cruises when I was a kid - one with Royal and one with Celebrity. I was shocked to see how much cruising has changed since the late 90s and my parents have finally convinced me to go on one with them. Because there will be 3 grown adults in one room, we decided to spring for a junior suite - though you can bet your ass I will be looking out for an affordable upgrade/upsell to grand suite. Does anyone else feel like just the very act of planning and researching for a vacation seems to extend it in some way in your mind? It's honestly one of my favorite parts so this place is like heaven!
