Thinking of cruising to Alaska from Seattle with someone who may not be able to enter Canada

Recommended Posts

the thought is that since we are only in Canada that person would not get off the ship. I called royal and asked about this and they said the person would be able to get on the ship but may want to get off at that stop. has anyone had experience with this? we still have time to go through the process of getting them approved to get into canada, but we do not want spend the time and money if we do not need to.

There are multiple recent threads about this (plus more resources reachable with google).  Calling Royal is not a guaranteed answer for anything and this is especially true when the issue is a legal one.  If you get to the port and are denied boarding, "I talked to someone who said it was OK" is not going to change the situation.  In my opinion, it's not worth the cost of the trip (which may not be refunded) or the time involved (especially if vacation time is lost) to risk something like this.

I wouldn't take Royal's word on it. In the end it's the Canadian Immigration who decide and Royal does not send the info on the passengers onboard until a few weeks before sailing. There was another thread about 3 weeks ago somebody got an email about a week before their cruise denying them boarding for issues. Best to call immigration and get it worked out now.

I'd contact Canadian Immigration and get the answer directly from them.

I contacted them and they said that it's a cruise line choice. Also talked with a lawyer who deals with this all the time and they said was up to the cruise line.

I agree with you 100% on this one. I was surprised when I heard it

That's the point of this question I have choices to make on this and am looking at my options. Since you do not have experience with this your answer is not helpful in the least bit.

I'm not sure anyone in the thread has offered advice from experience with this particular issue.  I will say many have experience with Royal Customer Service and I know that I would personally be reticent to rely on their word for something that has this big of a downside.

You should of course make your own choices and I hope you come back and let us all know how it worked out.

My answer to not trust royal's customer service on this issue is based on years of hearing other people have issues after relying on something they heard from phone support.  I'm sorry you don't find that helpful in your decision making process.

If they say its up to the cruise line than whatever the 'issue' is must not actually be an issue with Canadian border services. Cruise lines have it right in the cruise contract that it is up to the passenger to ensure they meet all requirements for entry into any of the stops on itinerary.

did you read the question or just enjoy being snarky?

I never try to be snarky.  I'm being honest.

If you are concerned about cruising through Canada, then don't cruise there. Alaska may not be an option for you.

This Hawaii cruise is a good option for anyone that doesn't want to leave the USA.

Coco Cay would be a better vacation choice.

That really not the question I am asking. I am asking if I have to get them a special visa or not

Coco cay is Over rated with the exception of the chicken shack

From your replies no answer you would have any value to me.

My apologies. There was no mention of a visa, so I thought you, or someone in your party had a DUI conviction on your record.  This was discussed at length in another thread. Is the person in question from another country?

From the posts below (ok, I guess above) you mention it's visa thing, if you want some additional confirmation (to make you feel at ease) there is government website to find if you need a visa

https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp

Ran a few scenarios, depending on the country of the passport you'll get this question below. Seems that via cruise ship has less restrictions

How do you plan to travel to Canada?

By air, via a Canadian airportBy car, train, bus or boat (including cruise ship)

I would take care of whatever their situation was to make sure a smooth entry regardless of what the cruise line says. Just to save some money? Do it for peace of mind. Spend the money.

Hold the phone.  People here are only trying to help you.  They only have part of the information from what you stated.  A little bit of niceness goes a long way.

The people on this board have value to you because they tried to help you.  I guess maybe you can take your 6 posts and go somewhere else.

Hardly knew ya.  Thank God.

The lack of anyone with direct experience may unfortunately be an indicator that it's not something frequently attempted.

It's also something that is incredibly nebulous.  You could take this cruise 5 times and have 5 different outcomes, from everything working just fine to Canadian Customs pulling the passenger from the ship.

If the whole issue is a visa, then get the visa.  It could prevent tons of unforeseen issues for a relatively small cost.

I agree with you. would be nice if I could trust Royals information to be applied consistently

the main part of the question was " has anyone had experience with this?". I was told to go to hawaii instead or that there many posts about this (which do not meet the scenario I am talking about).  All I ask is you actually read the question before you respond and have actual information before responding. Are you the board police??? Not sure what 6 posts you are talking about?

Please understand,  it isn't just Royal Caribbean involved. The port workers in Seattle are not Royal Caribbean workers. Royal also doesn't control Canada immigration.  Canada can change the rules without notice and without Royal's input.

Here's the deal, you were incredibly rude to good people on this board who were only trying to help you.

Just be nice.  Be humble.  You will get all the well meaning help of the collective group.  They, myself included,  are nice people.

Need more info…

Why would they maybe not be able to enter Canada. What is the issue that you told Royal on the phone that resulted in them telling you that it would be okay…and the lawyer who deals with this all the time telling you it’s up to Royal. Just curious as to why a Special Visa may or may not be required in this particular circumstance. No, I don’t have any experience with this, but others on the board may…if they have more information.

The good news is you still have time to go through the process of getting them approved. That would seem like the prudent thing to do…even if it means expending time and money to do it. Better to have peace of mind rather than risk being denied boarding at the pier. Good luck.

I would say some of the answers I got were rude and snarky. I would not call you a nice person, you tried to bully me and belittle me by telling me to leave and that because I had a low number of posts (even though your number was incorrect and I have actually been a member of this board longer than you)

We have time to take care of it.  So we are going to do that. The issue is it is not a cheap thing it's cost about $1000  - $3000.
