This is supposed to be a relaxing cruise because I packed Wonder. Yet she asked every hour "what's the itinerary?"

Itinerary for tomorrow: You escort her to the card room (or whatever that nearly always empty room is called). Give her a pack of cards and tell her the itinerary is that she has to win a game of solitaire 50 times in a row.

If you like her a little, you can pick her up for dinner.

Tell her this is how you kill your phone. Let that bad boy run down and charge it over night.

Not sure why, but this made me chuckle.

And preferably only charge it to 80%, not 100%, unless you need to. My wife just got an iPhone 15 and that's a built in feature. You can set it to stop at 80% automatically.

Day 5 PDCC.

I got up showered and made casino donations. I feel like I do good during the day and lose it all at night. I earned 800pt for myself and 600 for my brother. I could have made my mother prime but she insisted on playing $.20 for herself 🙄😜🤣.

Odyssey is at PDCC with us. We got off at noon and had ate. The buffet was the same as usual. However the taco bar only has chicken and pork. I noticed this at ELF across a couple of ships. I miss the beef as the chicken is often too salty and I'm not a pork taco person.

I took the tram for the first time from the port because my mother wanted to. I walked back and it was a great mind cleanser.

Yep, this seems to be the case. I've never noticed the chicken to be salty but by the time I'm done building my taco (including chipotle tobasco), I can't really taste the chicken anyway tbh. It's just there for protein and texture mostly.

Love the Snack Shack pictures. Those are my 3 items. Now that ELF isn't new to me anymore and I've had one on my last 2 cruises and will have one for all the future cruises I currently have booked, my plan is to avoid the taco bar on CocoCay and just see how much fried Snack Shack food I can eat. 😋

So day 4 continues

I thought I posted this.

We did the escape room which was so fun. Like I thought it was better than the one on Oasis. We finished with 6min to spare and we were only the second team out of five to complete it. My mother refused to help. Next time I won't pay for her to go.

There was a private function at Ellington and they were playing the jams. The audience was pure vintages and my brother said he was jealous 🙄🤣🤣😂😂.

I played in the casino and saw a couple of the vintages I have been chatting with. I sat with a nice one who was on the cusp of being too loose, aka drunk. I was her good luck charm because she hit a couple of jackpots and got $1300 on a free spin. She was also jealous that me, my brother and mother looked so young. Her husband had to come get her, he told her server to cut her off after the win. But she got two more beers 😀😅😜.

We had dinner and they had my beloved potato soup. I got 2 big bowls as my dinner. My brother tried the Buffalo chicken dip and eggplant burger, he said both were just okay. Our servers told us they were originally weary because they saw we were D+. But relieved when we're turned out so nice. They brought us a lobster mac, with extra lobster and a plate of caramel cheesecake. They also haven't charged us whatsoever for any drinks we get.

After dinner my brother got his 8 tuna sandwiches and our remaining drinks.

Stray observations

No one washes their hands. I watched a lady, while waiting on my mother, used the bathroom and go straight out to dinner.

Agreed. I'm sure I don't look nearly that happy (I'm just not as smiley) but it's likely no coincidence that most of these pics of him involve food. I think there's a universal food indulgence happiness that ensues when someone who likes to eat a lot is on a cruise. 😁

Wait, this is a daily thing? And he's about to go on Wonder for an additional 7 nights? I might be outclassed, lol. I'm so stuffed by the end of a 7N cruise that I'm legitimately a bit concerned over what will happen when I am finally able to go on something longer.

My brother and I have resting happy face, we smile a lot. I smile more when I am cruising.

He can eat, I went to the gym once this cruise, my brother every day plus excursions on the port days. He is excited for Wonder and our UDP. He had three plates at PDCC plus a shack chicken and mozz sticks. He will hit the WJ at 6pm before our 8pm MTD.

I had to answer a couple of emails, so a smidge of work. I then checked my mom in for her flight.

I personally feel like the casino was pretty tight. I didn't see a lot of jackpots hit and I was in there quite a bit. I wasn't actively playing towards anything this time, but I played every day and for hours at a time. I didn't walk away with anything but a couple of money off certs but I had fun.

There isn't much planned other than packing and playing cards in the library until dinner.

I can imagine. I am eagerly awaiting how much he orders/eats at Mason Jar (I assume you're going there).

As a party of 8 in June, ordering almost the entire brunch menu wasn't a big deal and our server encouraged it (obviously some of us were eating far more than others, lol). When it gets closer to our next cruise, I'll have to figure out what and how much to order as a couple since there's almost no overlap b/t what my wife likes there and what I do. Some items can be served in smaller portions while others can't. The cinnamon bun is pretty huge but I'm not skipping it. I've already decided most of it will be coming back to our cabin.

This is pretty much the only thing we’ve been getting lately, too, but we have intentionally cut back our casino time so it’s not unexpected.

I will mention this.  They are getting VERY strict about casino bookings requiring a Next Cruise future certificate.  Twice now, I have left the ship with only a $$ off certificate to find that the certificate was later upgraded to a combo $$ off/ limited list offer.  This certificate show a $$ off amount (in my case, $300) but then there is a short list of applicable cruise itineraries (mostly 3/4 nighters) to choose from.  If you don’t have a NC open booking they will only let you use the $$ off.  If you have a NC cert you can book one of the cruises on the list or use the $$ off.  Of course, the complimentary cruise is a much better value than $300 off.  This has happened to me twice now.  Why would I purchase a NC open booking when all I had was a useless $$ off cert ?  The fact that they upgrade it AFTER I leave the ship is ridiculous. If I had known I needed a NC cert I would have gotten one.  Now….i have been VERY lucky and gotten casino reps both times that cut me a huss and went ahead and booked one of the cruises from the list despite the fact that I didn’t have a NC cert (so I know it can be done !)  but I now fully realize that if I want to book a casino comp cruise (even if I don’t know I have one !) from an instant certificate, I had better have a NC open certificate !  In the past, if you didn’t have a NC cert the only thing you lost was the minuscule OBC attached to the NC booking.  Now you will lose the chance at booking a comp cruise.

So my advice to you is….if you think you are close to milestone points value that might possibly be upgraded AFTER you leave the ship AND if you are interested in a 3/4 night complimentary cruise, go ahead and get a NC open booking before you leave the ship.  If your $$ off certificate is upgraded after you leave the ship and you don’t have a NC booking you may be SOL.

Yes - I was surprised that the guidelines changed for the new iteration of cell phone batteries. Used to be that you were supposed to fully charge and then let it run all the way down, but now, to preserve battery life, it is recommended to keep it between 20-80%. But some people get set in their ways.

Day 5 continues

It was a very weird rest of the day.

But first I spoke too soon....we had a medical emergency and are currently speeding to PE. That will divert us about 2hrs and we will disembark no more than 2hrs late. I am feeling the movement. I acknowledge that staying forward seems to be the culprit. I can't really do this especially when it's speeding.

I went to the library with my mother, we were supposed to play games. She turned on her tablet and watched a show, and every time they did something she was extra animated. A family was playing scrable and being trifling. They were loud and using slang and curse words.

My plan was to go back to the room and pack. But I needed to use my earned points so I headed to the casino. I sat down on a cheap machine and there was a new machine I hadn’t seen before next to it. I asked the guy playing how it worked. We chatted for maybe 5min and he asked if I wanted to go back to his room. I laughed, because that's what I do in awkward situations. My brother came over and we sat in the chairs on deck 6 overlooking the promenade, until our room was cleaned.

There was a lady having a speakerphone conversation, walking back and forth. Also a fat baby who enjoyed going up and down the steps. The stowaway piano lady, super chill, came through. The fat baby and her family got on. They sat said baby on the piano and took video. More people got on but by the time we went to our room, they were still filming with the baby on the piano.

We had MTD but went earlier tonight because we didn't want to be out too late. We got our free photo and headed to our seats. I absolutely loathe when they do the dancing and swing the napkins. Tonight they brought out the galley and that was fine but it interrupts service. We had to wait 20min for our dessert and all of them were horrible.

First they had a coffee pot de creme, which looked and had the consistency of chilled grease. My brother tried, he usually eats anything sweet. The a chocolate hazelnut cake in a pot that was drrryyy and tasted old. @asquared17 knows about that so called lemon tart. My mother got lasagna and hated it. She hate ate a third of it, despite us and our servers telling her to get something else. Peter, the head waiter, tried to make things right. She narrated how she ate so much this week it didn't matter. She loves the oatmeal cookies and so we asked for some so they would feel like she was happy.

The casino was popping. But I was tired so I got a drink for the road and went back to the room. My brother got 3 tuna sandwiches and 5 slices of pizza.

Wow, a medical emergency right at the very end. That's so sad and I hope that person is OK. It's so fun to see you guys enjoying all the different dining options and maximizing your UDP. I bet you're really looking forward to changing ships and having just two people in the room! Looking forward to the next leg of your journey! We're going to miss each other by one day in Port Everglades. 😎🌴

PS: those parents setting their baby on top of the piano… I don't know, is it just me? That seems incredibly rude. Would you pick up a grown human and set them on top of the piano? Probably not.

Our piano player guy has had people walk in and set plates of half-eaten food on top of his piano so they can free their hands up to rifle in their tote bags and stuff. I just find it unbelievably disrespectful.

Finally reaching his tuna threshold? 🤣

Dunno about Mariner, and I’ve mentioned this before, but Sorrento’s was actually pretty good on my last 2 cruises. Much crispier than in the past which goes a long way for me. Grabbing 4 slices on the way back to the cabin if it’s late (for us at least, we don’t stay out crazy late unless it’s for a show) is fairly common for me. No disrespect to the tuna.

Order everything that sounds good… b/c it’s a fairly big menu for brunch & we liked most of it. As mentioned, some stuff can be made in smaller portions, like one piece of chicken n waffles instead of two. And others aren't huge like the cinnamon bun.

Disembarkation

We only ended up an hour late. Instead of calling the 1st numbers at 7:15 they will be called at 8. Unfortunately several people missed the memo and decided to line up at 7am to exit. The captain has made several announcements asking people to go to the designated waiting areas. As it only delays the process.

I got up at 6:44, everyone else was supposed to have been up. I didn't sleep well because my mother sleeps on her face and snores so hard, it's jarring. Nobody was up so I showered and got dressed for breakfast, the lines were insane and they wanted me to sit with strangers, I wasn't in the mood to talk so I will wait until we get to the hotel.

I had a brain fart. I packed my pants and only had shorts out. So I have to brave this 50ish degree weather in shorts. My mother decided to layer up in see-through clothes......she put a black t-shirt with writing under a light green blouse......I told her to change when she gets to the airport 🙄🤯😱.

I hope the person we evacuated is okay and that weather is better next week.

Not that you can't check the weather, and it's usually a bit warmer over there... but tomorrow morning will be even colder. It's 45-ish by me now and supposed to be sub-40 tomorrow morning. That might as well be -20 to the locals, lol.

We have "Weather Alert Days" b/c it's cold. 🙈

Hope the rest of your day goes smoothly and you can relax and recharge for Wonder!

Oh yeah, and not that I've checked the Caribbean, but it's supposed to be MUCH warmer here next week... like in the mid-80's by the end of the week. It's all over the place here.

Disembarkation was smooth for us passport folks.

I thought I signed up for the shuttle, I forgot I canceled. The shuttle is $8pp and goes from port to hotel and vice versa . Our Lyft was $22 with a tip and I have Lyft Pink, so I get discount. We book the 10am shuttle for Wonder.

We are staying at the country and suites. It cost $40 for early check-in. But I paid half price and it's worth it to be in and able to relax. The wifi is meh but I have had worse. We have a room on the first floor, I now have on pants. The room was clean and spacious for the two of us. We will make our grocery trip and then relax.

I booked that hotel (King suite NS) for our September Utopia cruise.  I’ll be interested in whether the breakfast is decent…as well as the shuttle ride to the port!  Did you book the shuttle with the hotel?  We are thinking of checking out the Italian restaurant Zarellas which I believe is just up the road from the hotel.

How far away is the grocery store…other stores?

Looking forward to this next leg of your cruise journey…really enjoying this so far!

Final thoughts and stray observations for Mariner.

The food in the MDR was more than passable. It wasn't amazing but it was bad. We were told Mariner has held the award for best food and service of the fleet for almost two months. I was shocked. I had Sorrento's twice and it was crispy and hot. Not great but better than it was in the past.

The comedian/juggler was dated and I felt that way about most of the shows. Other than the ice show, I never sat down for any. This was so I wasn't rudely disturbing anyone if I wanted to leave.

I mentioned the room. I felt claustrophobic because of the ceiling bed, so I spent almost no time in the room. Like @She Sails Away mentioned there were random smells. Midship elevators often smelled of smoke, Cafe promenade had a mildew smell towards the booths.

Overall this sailing has redeemed Mariner just a bit. I wouldn't actively go out of my way to book her but I wouldn't avoid her if a casino comp came my way.

Stray observations:

Coughing was at an all time high and hand washing was low. But people also weren't covering their mouths so.......🤔.

Ship was full, mainly of tiny humans screaming at the top of their lungs for everything.  Which didn't bother me as much because my mother was almost doing the same.

I saw less cleaning. Bathrooms were often filthy. My brother said the men's bathroom on deck five would have slices of pizza, not on a plate, on the sink. I saw baby you know what on the floor of the bathroom on deck 11. There was often no crew cleaning the hallways or stairs.

Maybe it's just me but the signs of what not to flush seem bigger above the toilet. Yet I saw a bathing bottom in a toilet.

Half of the casino bartenders and all the Cafe promenade/sugar beach employees looked unhappy. I mean miserable. Once we chatted or tipped they would perk up a bit but rbf was real amongst then.

I can't attest to the validity of this but crew we tipped would go out of their way to help us, several said we were the only one's tipping regularly.

They played a movie on deck every night. Trivia was packed and so were any events in the star lounge.

Last observations

I love my mother but we cannot stay together. Travel together,  sure but share accommodations.......never again.

We booked it going to port, I will let you know tomorrow, and I will book it coming back because I stay again before my Allure sailing.

The Publix is like 4miles away. We took a Lyft there and back. As you know my brother can eat. One meal at a restaurant wasn't going to work. So we got groceries 🤣😅😂😅.

Zarellas is walking distance imho.

I found the public bathrooms on Wonder, Mariner, and PDCC in 2023 to be filthy and grossly unattended at all times of day. Often found things like dirty diapers on the floor in stalls and two hours later would still be there. So I know nobody came around to clean. Definitely something they need to up there game on. It was center stage in my survey.
