Gamers on RC

Recommended Posts

As I walked around the Symphony of the Seas. I found my self exploring the teen area. It was empty. I have been on 4 cruises now and I don't think I have ever seen anyone in these spaces. Maybe just bad timing.

Anyone know if RC has ever thought about doing an E Sports type of place room. It would be amazing to do little tourneys with some games. The average gamer is between 30 and 40 these days. It's a massive market and gets bigger every year. I'm not into arcade games and not into a casino.

Would be a great opportunity for RC to get in on the ground floor.

Nope and who knows if they ever will to be honest.  Plus I can see a bunch of 30 to 40 year old's with a drink package and a bad attitude when they lose end up throwing a controller through a screen or starting a brawl... Yep, I think I will stick with my Raspberry Pi 4 in my room for my gaming fix while on the ship.  And I am sure some people pack their consoles to take on the ship as well.

Raises his hand 😄

Its perfectly doable with a xbox series s on longer itineraries because you aren't gonna see the shows over and over again.
For trips of 7 days or shorter just leave it at home and enjoy the entertainment onboard.

How are you all displaying your devices? Are you using the in room TVs or bringing some sort of external display? I know that the RPi can run a very small touch screen to make it like a hand held device.

On a side note I love my RPi 4 and have installed RetroPi along with Kodi on it. Kodi allows me to access my Jellyfin server along with 3rd party add-ons that gives me my cable TV. I would like to be able to take my RPi 4 and use it with the in room TV but the last time I tried (it has been several years now) but I was never able to get the my universal remote to see the TV so that I could change the input to my laptop.

Agree with you. Don't think having game consoles in public places will do any good so I understand the policy on that.

I don't even have to drink anything to get angry sometimes with certain games so those ones are on the blacklist for me during the cruise 😄  It's all about respecting your fellow cruisers.

Just plug it into the TV in the room. But yeah I have a 256GB flash card full of games and emulators. Going to get a thumb drive for movies at some point but I carry a bunch on my tablet. Speaking of,  I use a USB OTG connector along with a PS3 controller to play games as well. It's a TabS4 so it does most stuff including N64 pretty well. Just such a small screen that it can be a pain sometimes. Will probably sit in the Windjammer sometime on my Vision of the Seas cruise that starts on Black Friday playing games just for fun.

As somebody who considers themselves part of the gaming community - this is exactly why I wouldn't participate. As much as I enjoy games, I'm happy to unplug and get away from some of the toxic aspects that comes with the gaming community and sit quietly with my Switch if I really want to play something.

I’ll just bring my switch and play animal crossing in my room and yell at my little animals by myself in my room.  I have no desire to watch neckbeards drunk playing whatever game and yelling in Klingon that someone beat them.

This is a great idea.   I have a switch and don't bring it on cruises, but I bet as things get back to normal you could probably get some good gaming going on with Mario Kart and Animal Crossing.

I'm happy to unplug for a week. Between both my kids and myself the XBOX is on almost all the time from Friday night through Sunday evening. My wife appreciates the family time and I'm pretty sure, she would not be happy if a game system was in our checked luggage.

You young punks call yourself gamers... you know not of gaming with your electronic gadgets.

All you need is paper pencil and dice.

I would totally attend nautical(or any) themed campaign taking place over several sessions and days! I would put a mighty hurting on the drinks package at the same time.

A one shot at sea would actually be a blast.

Maybe not an esport thing, but I think it'd be cool to have a gaming area. I know some ships have an arcade, but I think a Dave & Buster's inspired place with food and a bunch of games would be pretty cool, maybe where a cover charge means you can play all the games you want (or maybe given a certain number of tokens).

That's honestly exactly what the Playmakers/SeaPlex area on Odyssey reminded me of. Broad assortment of games and easy access to bar/food at Playmakers with some pretty great ocean views.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the SeaPlex! I've seen videos of it and I like the idea for sure, but I think it could be so much more than that. I hope they expand it on future ships! Heck, I say go all in and put some bowling alleys in!
