“Old White Woman is still kicking” Star Class - Harmony of the Seas - January 14th

Back when I started cruising, hubby was a Colonel in the Army, and treated the cruise as a mission. His mission was to make sure “my ass” didn’t knock over table lamps on my way off the ship.  We always walked up and down the stairs, even up to the 15th floor from level three. Never gained weight, heck….I left the cruise feeling like I had done lunges continuously.

Then he retired and was a director at Lockheed Martin.  Ten floors up stairs was my limit. Maintained weight.

Years later, hubby still runs every morning, but to the human eye it’s more of a jog.  His ankles, from years of jumping out of an airplane, makes a funny cracking sound, even when he walks,  He no longer “pushes” me more than a few floors of stair taking. He does continue to “roll his eyes” when I push the elevator button to go up, but he jumps in fast right behind me.  The last cruise I gained three pounds. I call it “elevator” weight.  This coming up cruise I’ll be happy with a three pound weight gain. I will say after years and years of gambling on cruises I have really strong hands, fingers in particular.  I can sit 12 hours straight continuously hitting a button. All that exercise has left me with long thin fingers. 🙂

Last time that I’m  playing with fire!
We have never purchased insurance for our cruises. We have tri care thru the military, so we are covered medically worldwide. I’m thinking we are not covered for medical evacuations.  My friend’s son and his new wife went to Jamaica for their Honeymoon (who does that?) and the their tour bus was hit by a car.  The wife took the brunt of the accident. Hubby was injured too. Now Jamaica is not equipped for serious stuff.  She ended up in their substandard hospital until arrangements could be made to medically evacuate her to the States. Parents scrambled to come up with almost 25,000 dollars. Then they had to pay cash to the hospital in Jamaica to let her go.  Parents and hubby didn’t realize wife had purchased insurance, which later paid.  Would the insurance company make a fast payment like they needed?

You would think that I would of purchased insurance after that!  Never thought much about it. Now I’m worried that one of us will need some serious medical care.
I’m too late for this cruise, but those that but cruise insurance, where do you purchase it. How much does it cost?

We have the Chase Sapphire visa which has trip insurance for 10k pp included if you use that card to pay for a portion of your trip. Lately, I've just been adding a cheap medical plan only to cover evacuations and hospital stays outside the country. This is around $65-75 for the 2 of us per trip and worth it.

But to your point, i have no idea how quickly they pay out because we've never needed to make a claim. 😀

Side note, i did use my Sapphire card to rent a car once and banged up the rear bumper (long story). Bottom line, Chase was great to work with when i submitted my claim for that.

You may not be too late. When my Dad became ill in early December, we scrambled to purchase insurance for our next 3 cruises that final payment was already in for. It was not too late. We bought our insurance through Allianz and they said the better way to do it is after final payment. As far as cost, it is going to depend on how much you want to insure and your age. But call them. We literally bought insurance for Odyssey two weeks before sailing.

Just as @Lovetocruise2002 mentioned, it may not be too late! Coverage often effective the day after you purchase the plan (as per link). As mentioned, you may have fewer coverage options (existing medical condition exclusion, etc.).

We also use Allianz... here is an FAQ on this topic:

we purchased insurance maybe a few days (definitely within the week) of our trip on windstar in november. it wasn’t full coverage/cancel for any reason, and i didn’t pursue the tip top coverage — it is also of course, dependent upon the cost of the trip, as others have mentioned — but worth exploring.

i think it was around $100, but some of that was because we purchased so late in the game (literal DAYS before travel) and our airfare was expensive.

I’ve read a lot of posts saying that Genies preferred their tip being placed in their account.  Does the genie bring me the form?  Do I fill it out then give it back to him?  How far in advance do I need to take care of that?  Is it the same way with the room steward?  Thanks!

I asked what our genie preferred in pre cruise communication.  On Harmony he preferred his tip through our onboard account. He brought the form on day 7 and all I had to do was complete the crew name, position and amount. The form needs to go back to them to complete their details. I folded up the form, put it in his card and gave it to him that night at supper.  By the next morning the form had been processed and the tip amount showed on our onboard account.   Very easy process for me.

I don't think it's too late. You may have to pay slightly more than normal because it's last minute but I don't think it's too late.

I buy my insurance through Allianz. I go to their website and shop around for the amount of money I want to spend and the amount of coverage I would like to have and then I choose whatever I want from what they offer me. Last year I bought an annual insurance plan instead of a trip by trip plan, it was $510. And it covers all travel in one year and it covers everything I want it to cover. By the time it expires I will have used it for six or seven cruises, some of them international and there's plenty of medical evacuation coverage in there.

Until @Jax's most recent live SC blog, I wasn't even aware that there was an option for tipping the Genie "electronically:.  That's actually much easier than trying to come up with a fist-ful of cash on the last day !!

especially if the cash you brought got donated in the casino 🤣

You could be old white woman’s son, you read my mind!  I do like to think of my gambling money, not as a donation, but doing my part to stimulate the economy.  I’m helping people to keep their jobs!  It’s really like I’m a “hero” of sorts, but in reality just a simple woman trying to help others. Yea, my husband didn’t  buy that either!

Its never too late unless the medical emergency is due to a pre existing condition that has not been stable or new medicine prescribed for a period of time.  Those normally need to be purchased when the cruise is booked to have all preexisting conditions covered.

Berty told me that there is a GS officer whose job is to stay up late until all of the forms are processed on the last day.

Shit fire, storms are coming for my Indiana and Milwaukee kids!  They received a travel advisory (Hey, your flights might be delayed or cancelled on Saturday). Youngest son is now flying to Galveston Thursday night…he’s determined to make it. Son number one is still in the “what should we do” mode. He has four kids that have care  starting Friday night.  The rest of us look in the clear. Anybody know for a 4:30 departure, the latest you can get on the ship?

I am in Chicago and the weather has been a mess. We are getting some storms possibly on Thurs into Friday and then it will be below freezing for the next almost week. I am glad to be heading into warmer weather on the 15th. I hope everything works out for your children.

I am in Chicago also. Our car is going into the shop Tuesday morning. I will be taking public transportation to work until Thursday evening. Insane cold weather indeed.

I hate that suitcase leaning against the wall. Well, it’s not actually the suitcase that I hate but what it represents.  It represents years and years of this:

Me asking hubby to start packing. Hubby saying he will. Me telling him if he waits until the last moment he may not be able to replace what he needed to take. Hubby says, he’s got it.

Years and years of this same conversation to where we both knew we were now in “battle” mode. There could only be one winner.  Either I would stop nagging or hubby would pack before the clock struck midnight.

I’ve increased my nagging, in hopes, he will give in and pack the day before leaving. He started leaving his suitcase leaning against the wall knowing I would have to pass it many times a day. Now we are adults about this. My nagging is done under the disguise of “love” and he answers under the disguise of “love”. An outsider would never detect that there was a battle going on. I know he knows, and he knows I know that only one of us can be the winner.

Marriage is the reason the words “passive/aggressive” exist.

He will find out packing, just before we leave tomorrow, that he has no clean underwear, and I will be crown Queen!

This was my parents, but about leaving to go somewhere on time. My mom would do all the stuff to leave a little early and my dad would habitually leave just slightly late. As kids, we would be sitting in the car watching my mom fume...

I'm telling you, Batman has come around to having "cruise underwear" that he now keeps in a packing cube!

And @Yesiamthere, you're handling it all wrong! Batman packs because i do everything else trip-related and he once made an empty offer, asking if he can help with anything. I called his bluff and now the rule is that i get to throw whatever i want to take on the guest bed and he packs it like a game of Jenga. My only job during this time is to keep him plied with cold beers. Glorious.

Remind me on how Batman ended up with no underwear?

It was going to rain on our embarkation day so Batman waterproofed our luggage with a garbage bag, which i made fun of by referring to us as "Star Trash." He saw my point and decided to waterproof from the inside with a painter's tarp. The underwear was missed in that repacking effort ..... He blamed all black underwear inside a black suitcase.

Where it all started:

Oh my, it’s going to be a tough ride for all of us to get to Galveston.  Son number two, from Milwaukee, decided to fly out last night,  after getting a warning from his apartment complex that their heating system may not handle the upcoming temperatures and wind factor. Son number one, from Indiana, is on the list for possible delays or cancellations.  Not sure his game plan. South Carolina group seems to be fine. Coming from Kentucky it’s all about the wind.

Main problem is we are not going to really know until flying day tomorrow on just how bad the wind will be. Trying to think of back up plans. I think there’s going to be a lot of people that are not going to make this trip, pray we are not in that group!

I feel your pain. Hubby feels once he uses his credit card, it's my job to pack.
