“Old White Woman is still kicking” Star Class - Harmony of the Seas - January 14th

Yep, Old White Woman is a bit quiet but does read all your blogs.  Anticipation of your cruise is not as fun as actually cruising, but it’s still fun preparing and dreaming.  I booked this cruise almost two years ago, back when you could get a star class room for less than a new car. Price for our room has doubled in price.  Seven of us are staying in the 8th floor Aqua Suite. Hubby is booked in a boardwalk room, two doors from the suite.

Don’t worry, Old Woman still likes her hubby, so he will be sleeping with her in the Aqua Suite. Son and his wife will sleep in the boardwalk room, but still be listed as star class.  Someone had to bite the dust and just be a “regular folk” on the cruise.  We all took a vote and hubby lost.  Made sense as hubby requires so little to be happy and content. It is rather ironic that the person who is paying for star class ended up in the boardwalk room, but it is what it is.  Sometimes you are voted off the island.

Hubby is Diamond and bought the ultimate dining package.  He will join us for dinners.  Four drinks a day is plenty for him, and I’ll give him a water here and there if he is thirsty.  I’m not an “evil old white woman” -  I’ll keep my man hydrated.

Our genie, MJ, is new, like really new to being a genie.  We are in his first group, like ever. He is a concierge in the suite lounge now, and loved!  Well, at least by the people who post on the internet. So far, he has been awesome with his pre cruise contact. We have gone back and forth a couple of times about my “would like to have” list. Told him we should arrive around ten, knowing we would have a wait to board. He said he would have our room ready!  We needed an ice chest for our overflow of drinks, and extra laundry bags too. Throw in a couple of fans for those that need “fan noise” to sleep. No problem.  No problem booking the Hibachi restaurant.

I’m hosting our Facebook’s slot pull for 80 something people the first sea day.  We have an excursion in Honduras and renting a golf cart in Costa Maya.  Naps for sure!

Our plan is to eat at Jamie’s for lunch on boarding day. A couple of us would like pizza. What’s the chance Jamie’s would make pizza for us?  What’s the chance of having a bourbon tasting in our room?  Anybody sail out of Galveston?  If so, what’s your thoughts?

Yea, it’s almost my turn!

I do feel a little sad for him, but someone had to be voted off the Island!  Give him a peanut butter sandwich and a bourbon, then he is ready to call it a night. Total waste of a genie. The rest of us dream about having a genie.  Did I mention I would give him water?  🙂

I cannot wait to hear your impression. He is such a well loved concierge.

Probably not likely, but it would not hurt to ask.

Looking forward to another Harmony Blog to help me get excited for our turn. I am eagerly waiting to hear who our genie is. Another 2ish weeks to go. @Jax was great with her description of Berty, so it will be fun to read about MJ. 45days 12 hours 17 ish minutes until we board (as of typing this) but whos counting!!

Berty mentioned MJ would be taking on his first genie assignment in January. He is very excited for him and will be a great mentor to MJ.  He said that he and MJ go way back, both taking a similar path to getting to their current role as a Genie. Excited to hear about your experience.

I wish I had as many countdowns as you do! Alas, with a couple of freeloaders in tow, we typically cruise 1-2x a year.

Mine is about the same.  About 2 a year, 1 with the freeloaders and 1 with just the wife. I just have to cruise down in the cheap cabins though. I enjoy reading all the Star Class blogs, but that is just a dream for me.

Yeah, the suite life is a slippery slope. I fully blame @Lovetocruise2002 and a relatively claustrophobic wife for this. The Boss really enjoys the space to spread out, so large rooms it is for us. Happy wife happy life🤣

You sound like me years ago when my kids were, well kids. I’ve done my share of interior rooms.  I’m older now and my kids are adults. My old woman’s advice is stay in the cheaper rooms, and save the difference. (Just like you are doing).  Yes, it’s really nice to be Star class, but it comes with a steep financial cost. You can do several cruises for one star class. I like reading “around the world” cruise blogs, but it’s a dream, one I’m not willing to pay $200,000 for. I still read and dream though!

Will Berty on the January 14th sailing?  If so, I gotta find him to say hello.

What? How am I to blame again?! 😂

That is how I feel too. We have done our share of interiors, ocean views, balconies, and suites. We know what we like, we can only cruise certain times of the year (because of school schedules), so it’s not even like I could cruise many times even if I sailed non-suites and divided the money.

One thing is certain, if someone is to blame then it’s gotta be @Lovetocruise2002 fault. She's the reason people start their blogs a year out. She’s the reason why people borrow money at 30 percent interest for they can stay in a star class room.  Heck, she’s the reason why we even know there’s such a thing as star class. I’m guessing @WAAAYTOOO might be her sister in crime on that one!  She’s also the reason why people are terrified of the windjammer. The brave people sneak into the windjammer, grab the ranger cookies, and run straight to the suite lounge.  She’s also the reason, that no matter who you have to “push out of the way,” you are going to eat at CK for their steak night.

Have I forgotten any “she’s the reason”.

Her saving grace is “she’s so darn cute” and writes the most informative blogs. She’s a keeper!

I stopped doing that after covid! 😂

Nope! I blame @WAAAYTOOO and @CGTLH for that. Those two were blogging star in the early days.

Ok, I might be able to own that one lol

Time is a ticking - eight days until we travel to Galveston.  Hubby and I are leaving from Kentucky; daughter and granddaughter/hubby (told you I was old) are coming from SC; oldest son/wife from Indiana, and youngest son from Milwaukee.  Pretty obvious that from all the States listed that our background is military.  Kids really never had a home state.  We are flying into Hobby airport, which if rumors hold true, is small - like blink your eye and miss it small.

Staying at the Airport Marriott.  Going to Mass at 8:30pm since we will not be able to attend on Sunday.  Gotta make sure Jesus and I are fine before I’m on a ship out in the ocean.  It’s a Mass all in Spanish.  My only Spanish word I know is “taco”….should be an interesting hour.

Galveston Shuttle and limo will pick us up the next morning in their van - big van I hope - 16 pieces of luggage. I’m really hoping that Star Class is clearly marked and there’s a strong porter waiting for us.  What in the world do you “tip” a porter for 16 pieces of luggage?

Our genie, MJ, sent our schedule for revisions.  I deleted all the sea day lunches he had scheduled.  We all wanted more flexibility during the day.  Grease (seen it before) bit the dust.  Told him our granddaughter just got married in a small wedding, and we would like to have a little post celebration in our room.  The kids in their 30’s are being a bit silly.  I’ve tried telling them there’s stuff that a genie just cannot do. They wanted the pickle ball court reserved for them, room service from different restaurants delivered at the same time, and a large table reserved at the night club.  They just don’t understand “why not” when we spent thousands and thousands extra for star class.  First, tried to explain that the “man in the boardwalk room” paid the thousands and thousands extra for star class, and if they kept voicing their “silly” wishes I would have the genie ONLY WhatsApp me.  It’s been a bit quiet since.  🙂

Next up:  What to pack?  It seems everyone will have a check-in suitcase and a carry-on.  Thanks to @Lovetocruise2002 we are all afraid our check-in bag will not make it to the other end, so we are putting this and that into our carry on luggage!

My twisted sense of humor read this and immediately thought this would be the perfect opportunity for “these people will never see me again” shenanigans……then I realized that Mass probably isn’t the appropriate place for “what is that crazy lady doing?” sort of thing…

A crisp high five!!! Actually if I had that much I would tip $20-30 especially if everyone packs like The Boss does and flirts with the maximum allowed weights.

High school Spanish from 30+ years ago. You're welcome.

*above may or may not mean 'Go with God.' Try it after Mass and lmk!

Well, that’s what I’m going to say at the end of Mass. I’m going to trust that it doesn’t mean “go screw yourself”.

@GregDThanks for the tip amount, it’s the amount I was thinking.  I’ll try to be good at Mass, and avoid asking people questions in English. I’ll mostly be good because of the below:

Once traveling with a friend (who is a Baptist) we stopped at the “side of the road” Church for I could attend Mass, before we hit the casino. Never hurts to have Jesus helping you to pick out the winning machine. It hasn’t help yet, but you never know.

Well, we were running late, so had to make a dash into the Church. I was wearing black sweatpants, and my friend being Baptist and all, had on purple sweatpants. She was getting in the Easter mood. My friend paused at the door, so I pushed her hard to get her legs moving. She about fell on her face. We both looked up to see that we were now standing, wearing our sweat pants, in the middle of the Choir singing.

Standing in front of the whole Church, looking like we had seen better days.  All eyes on us.  Choir kept singing.  I thought the Priest was going to take up a second collection for food for us.

We had used the wrong door to enter. My friend was looking at me “as to what should we do now” since I was the Catholic.  With a bunch of “excuse me’s” we made our way to sit in back of the Church.  So embarrassed.  When my mind is quiet, I can still hear Jesus laughing over that moment!

One week from now I’ll be out in the ocean!  I’ve opened my suitcase and started piles on the floor. Debating to “outdo” @Jaxon having the most luggage, but decided to save my trophy for the “biggest win” in the casino. Reality tells me I’ll probably get the trophy for “biggest weight” gain on a cruise!

What’s the most you gained on a cruise?
