Cactus527 Posted September 14, 2024 Author Report Posted September 14, 2024 So, my wait at POM was rough. As I said previously, they changed the departure time to 9:00 a.m. They told our group that was using the shuttle that we had to be outside after 8:30. So, like the dutiful cruisers that we are, most of us are out there by 8:45. There was a heat advisory yesterday in Miami because of the high temperatures plus heat. At least the area where we were standing in was shaded? But it was still incredibly hot and humid. The bus showed up at 9:50 a.m. WTF kept it from being on time is a mystery. It took the bus driver 20 minutes to load the bus then. We got into FLL at 10:45 a.m. IMO, if RC Is going to offer shuttles to the airports, they need to be somewhere near the time that they say it's going to be. I don't think that the bus was held up by traffic or anything else, I think it's just not properly arranged. In fact, they put the people that were on the 10:00 bus with us and were saying that they were so glad they didn't have to order another bus. WTF. If you're going to offer two departure times to that airport, you should have two buses ready to go. After that fiasco, it was pretty smooth sailing. FLL to MSY (New Orleans), which is actually my very first time in Louisiana. Getting off the plane, the first thing I smelled was Southern food and it made me very happy. The airport is really nice and modern, and I enjoyed the jazz music piped throughout. Definitely splurged on BEIGNETS!!! My flight from MSY to PHX was only half full so I got an entire row to myself. Bus ride from PHX to near my house was a bit terrifying, but only because the driver seemed intent on setting a new land speed record on the freeway. So glad to be home. J3N Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 Thank you for your blog. It was a fun read. There is a bar ( don't remember the name) in NOLA airport that serves one of the best Bloody Marys there. Pickled vegetables instead of celery. So good that we got 2 of them. Miss the beignets at Cafe Du Monde. We used to have a family business at the Riverwalk , closed due to aftermath of Katrina. I would fly in and out of there often. Cactus527 Posted September 14, 2024 Author Report Posted September 14, 2024 ROOM: I was in forward-facing ocean view 10502. I think it's interesting that they say it's an obstructed view on the deck plans, but there wasn't anything obstructing it unless you consider the fact that the helipad is there so you don't have a direct view down to the ocean. The room was HUMONGOUS. It almost felt like a regular room with 75% more added when you consider all the space leading towards the front/window. The room is very tired though, like the curtains were basically falling off their tracks, closet doors having a very hard time sliding open and closed, loose tiles in the shower area, and sad sad carpet. I know when they do the amplification that they're not going to be doing much with the rooms, but I do hope that they fix some of the basics in the room through regular maintenance. I put in a maintenance request the night before I left for the room, so we'll see if it gets fixed. Other than that, the bed was very comfortable, the room was incredibly quiet (I think this is the quietest room I've ever had on any ship), and I never really felt the motion of the ocean. I thought it was strange because there were people commenting on it that were staying near the aft of the ship, but I think I felt it maybe twice the entire time I was on board. I did spend quite a bit of time in my room, and it was lovely to have all that sunlight when it wasn't raining! However, it was also fun to watch the rain on the window. I also found it amusing that the people next to me were also from the desert Southwest! What are the chances of us being side by side on a Florida cruise? SHIP: Having been on Allure before, I think it helped that I didn't feel like I had to go everywhere to see everything all the time. I think I spent most my time going between the Promenade, the Boardwalk, and Central Park. It was only on the last Sea Day that I actually went up to the pool deck, and it was just too hot and humid to enjoy for a long period of time. There were definitely times that it felt very crowded, especially on the Promenade, disembarkation time, and when hanging out afterwards at POM. There were some kids on board, but it wasn't overwhelming, and I realized that most European schools aren't back in session yet, so it explained why so many of them were not speaking English or Spanish. Crew was hit or miss - most of them were fine, but there were a few that just flat out ignored me or didn't care. SHOWS/PROGRAMMING: I enjoyed every show I went to. That includes Blue Planet: Home, Ocean Aria, the comedy show, and Blades (ice show). The veteran's salute I caught on the Promenade was also good. I wish I would have gone to see some of the movies they offered in the theater, but that's not a big deal. DINING: While I'm still not the biggest fan of Oasis class ships (SO BIG!), I do love all the food choices available. I did Park Cafe, Solarium Bistro, MDR, Cafe Promenade, Sorrento's, Vitality Cafe, Boardwalk Doghouse, Boardwalk Donuts, Johnny Rockets, Giovanni's Table, Sabor, and Chops. Making this list, I just realized I never went to the Windjammer! There was room service breakfast one morning, which I highly recommend, but I think my favorite free place to eat remains Park Cafe. It's smaller, has great variety of food for both breakfast and lunch, great grab-and-go snacks, and I've always found the crew in there to be extra friendly and helpful. My favorite specialty restaurant really depends. I would say Johnny Rockets is still my favorite for breakfast, even though it's free, but Sabor (even with my missing yucca fries) was a surprise hit for me. Being from the Southwest, it was nice to have similar spice on a lot of the food there instead of the bland spice most places across the country put on their Mexican food. I also loved experiencing Chops's full menu. All the specialty dining staff were fantastic too. Tip: If you're looking for actual cans of soda to take back with you to your state room, I found that Cafe Promenade and Boleros could do that. PORTS OF CALL: There were only two on this cruise, Nassau and Perfect Day. I almost didn't get off in Nassau because it was so hot that day, but it became overcast midday and so I dashed out to explore the port area a little bit more. I'm glad I did. Perfect Day was a fantastic day and I was able to really relax and enjoy myself, even though I only spent 1.5 hours on the island. Got to love that Snack Shack! I noticed there were a whole lot more people on board the ship on Nassau day versus PDCC day. It would be fun to have a four-night cruise that visited somewhere else in the Bahamas occasionally, like Bimini or Freeport, but I also get that Oasis class ships are massive. PDCC is always a hit. I didn't do any excursions on either port day, but that was fine by me. BOARDING/DISEMBARKATION: Boarding was a hit. Disembarkation was kind of a snarl, and waiting for RC transport was awful. I'm hesitant to recommend the RC shuttle since I've used it 4 times now for various cruises and had issues twice. While Uber/Lyft would be more expensive, I'm thinking it might be better for my sanity. FINAL THOUGHTS: I loved that the captain on this ship didn't feel the need to broadcast everything into everybody's room all the time. I only gained 5 lb on this cruise! I think that's a giant win. Definitely did not take advantage of the refreshment package like I should have. I probably should have just done a soda package and then paid for the couple of drinks that I had beyond the soda. MDR dining is wonderful. So is specialty dining. I'm glad to have the option of both, and I wouldn't be unhappy if I had to stick with one or the other. There were apparently a thousand ducks that were hidden all over the ship this cruise. Literally everywhere I turned there was a duck. It was insane. I would have been unhappy if I had a balcony cabin this cruise because of how much it rained. So glad I had the ocean view. Speaking of ocean view, this is the first time I've had that type of room. I didn't know how I was going to feel about it going from interior to balcony to Junior suite. I don't know how I would feel about one of the porthole ocean view rooms, but the forward-facing ones are definitely among my top choices now. I probably wouldn't have spent much time out on the balcony anyway, so just having the window to admire everything through was perfect. And now it's back to reality. Next cruise - a 3-nighter on Navigator out of L.A. in early December! WAAAYTOOO, KristiZ, SweetPea and 3 others 5 1 Quote

Can't see the ocean anywhere from the promenade or CP, and only off the back on the boardwalk. Being on Liberty and the Princess cruise made me how much I love being able to sit at the piano bar, or a lounge in the promenade...even in the casino... and see the ocean! I'm going to link an article that goes way more in depth, but generally speaking, the interior of the Monos is better while the exterior of the Away is more durable. I prioritize my interior space, so the Monos takes the cake. Monos is also slightly cheaper than Away. https://www.rd.com/article/monos-vs-away/ That being said too, while I don't have experience with Away, the customer service I've received from Monos has been AMAZING. They have sales around all the big holiday times, which is how I originally got the bag, but even paying standard price for it is worth it. I have the Monos Carry-On Plus, so no extra front compartment for a laptop, because I wanted as much interior space as possible. It's allowed me to go on 3- or 4-night cruises with just a backpack and carryon. I know everyone loves Away, and I think they're beautiful, but I'm sticking with my Monos. PPPJJ-GCVAB 1 Quote
asquared17 Posted September 21, 2024 Report Posted September 21, 2024 playing devil’s advocate here…. i swear by my away luggage as it’s been through a lot and i’ve had my carryon for over a decade and it still looks brand new (in my opinion). i also find away’s warranty and return policy to be OUTSTANDING. one of the things that deterred me heavily from monos was their return process. so i too ordered during black friday last year and when i wanted to send the suitcases back, it would have eaten into my return fee for each bag (a carryon and suitcase) while i was intrigued by the interior pocket space and storage, one of the best things for me with away is that i can (and have) send back without needing to rationalize it with customer service (which was my monos experience - i did have to fight to get them to waive the return fees). to be fair, in their defense — it was during their busiest period of time, and their return for any reason policy may have changed since then. my away suitcase lost a small “bumper” on the bottom and they replaced the entire thing, no questions asked. they had me for life after that but i think it varies with your experience and, as @Cactus527 said, how you prefer your bag structured. i was pleased to read that they had replaced the bag without any grief Cactus527, Ampurp85 and PPPJJ-GCVAB 3 Quote
