packing cubes for life!!

organizes all my clothing groups (workout, pajamas, tees/shorts, overnight hotel/pre-cruise wear) so i just unzip and stow in drawers when ready to unpack. and then i put the empty cube back in my suitcase.

My cubes are also packed by clothing groups😁.  Can't live without them!

I’ve been using packing cubes for years…best invention ever!  I also pack them according to category and of course sometimes the categories change per the type of vacation!  For cruising… having one specific for pre-cruise hotel stay and embarkation day is so perfect.  A few years ago I gave these as presents to all my kids, their husbands, and the grandkids.  Everyone got their own color!
Never pack without them!

Made it to Miami. In my hotel room for the night. Searching TV for some football games.

This is the only part of solo traveling I hate....Staying in the hotel the night before the cruise. I get so jittery. I recall every horror story involving a hotel that I've ever heard, and I begin to wonder what exactly happened to Bob Saget anyway. I have no problems staying in a cruise cabin by myself but there's something about hotels that makes me nervous. Anyway, the hotel is chock full and everything's going to be fine and I'm in for the night and won't emerge from my room until it's time to head to port tommorow.

The flight left late but somehow we still landed on time, there was some turbulence but nothing terrible. Everything went smoothly. Lots of people in my Facebook cruise group are getting bumped right and left due to snowstorms, some families have had to give up on the notion of rescheduling their flights and they have grabbed a car and started driving for 18 hours.

When I got to the Miami airport I went and found the shuttle to take me to the hotel. On the shuttle ride over, there was a man sitting across the aisle from me, and he told a dirty joke to the lady sitting next to me. There was a lot of anatomical terms thrown around and the gist of the joke was exactly what wives do to "get their husbands to buy them diamonds."

It was awful but the lady next to me slapped her leg and laughed long and hard. Somebody on the fringes of the group wanted to know what they were laughing at so the guy repeated that dirty joke AGAIN. And mind you, there were kids on board.

Then he leered at both of the ladies and said he noticed they were wearing diamond rings and he knew exactly what they did to get them.

I don't know, am I a stodge? I found it disturbing. And he doesn't even know these ladies. What is wrong with people.

In any case, that's all over now and I am in the room watching airplanes come in to land at the airport. My son is studying to be a pilot and I am a lot more interested in these kinds of things than I used to be. In fact, he is taking his first solo flight tomorrow so I'm gonna be one nervous mama til I get that text that it's over.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in on the packing cubes. Got to say I love being able to pull out my overnight kit-packing-cube for everything I need between now and tomorrow morning, and not having to rifle through my suitcase looking for that one lost item.

As we flew over the port I caught a glimpse of some cruise ships. So exciting! I have forgotten how much I love cruising out of Florida and tootling around the Caribbean for fun and sun.

I am so worn out. I can never sleep the night before I travel. I took a few naps during the course of the night but that's about it, and we were up at 5:30. Am I alone in that department? What about you guys?

More soon!

@She Sails Away - This (packing cubes) could be a whole interesting discussion on the main forum! I can ask that in a new thread, unless you'd prefer to do it, given that it is your question first?

I'm also new-ish to packing cubes and am still getting used to them.

No, ask away! ❤️😊 Great idea!

I am the same way.  I even try to go to bed early the night before hoping to get some sleep but it never happens.  At least I have no problems sleeping on the plane even if its only for a few hours.

It's boarding day! I feel the appropriate level of festive pre-cruise happiness now that I've had a good nights sleep and my travel day is behind me and I'm about to leave this hotel.

The forecast calls for scattered showers throughout the day but it's going to be a fantastic day regardless of whatever the weather does. I keep hoping I'll pass Icon of the seas and get a glimpse of it somewhere, but it doesn't look like our paths are going to cross. There are several people in our Facebook group who got here early and went down to the port and saw Icon and posted pictures in our group. So cool to see it up close. I had zero interest in booking that ship especially given the price, but now that it's here and everybody's excited, I'm excited too. Can't wait to see our mods take the inaugural cruise and follow along!

I am caffeinating and reshuffling my packing cubes. I can see the charm of the packing cubes for sure but I think there's a learning curve here for me. Despite the beauty of the packing cubes I somehow have misplaced my toothbrush so now I have to pull them out and go through them. (Yes, I ended up going to bed without brushing my teeth last night, a very rare thing. Please don't judge me too harshly, I was exhausted. 😅) Mine are all lumpy and while they are well divided, I just feel like I haven't executed them to the utmost degree quite yet.

I have an Uber lined up and I have an 11 AM boarding time although with the Key, I don't think a later boarding time would've mattered, I would've been invited to board at 11 anyway.

As a matter of fact, as I was typing this I just got a text from Royal Caribbean reminding everybody to stick to their scheduled boarding times! 👍🏼

Here's the current view from the hotel window.

I did most of my sleeping from 1 AM to 7 AM but I do feel like a new person.

My muster station is on the promenade in the karaoke lounge. How cool is that? It will be a breeze to go right over there and get that done.

More soon!

All right. It's been a very good day with one slightly horrifying thing that happened. I think I'll go ahead and tell you about the horrifying thing so we can get to the part where we focus on all the positives.

Got to the port with no problem, boarded with no problem, explored the ship a while. Went to the dining room for the specialty lunch from chops grill. I'm a vegetarian but I sometimes eat chicken and I thought I could get some roasted chicken from the chops grill menu. But they didn't have that, they had a limited selection and it was all variations on beef. I sat there for about 10 minutes planning to ask my server if they had any vegetarian options today, but the longer I sat there the more I realized that the dining room was extremely warm and clammy. So I left. I went up to the solarium to eat.

I got a piece of barbecue chicken and some vegetables. ate some of the vegetables, great. Cut into the chicken and stuffed a bite into my mouth and then looked down and saw that the chicken was completely raw inside. There was a pool of bright red blood in the middle of the chicken where I cut it.

Thought I might be sick. Spit my food out into a napkin and carried the napkin out with me as I fled, dumped the (cloth) napkin into a trashcan and circled the deck, taking some deep breaths. I know I should've hung back and talked to a waiter or a staff member about the situation but I was afraid I was going to throw up and it seemed best to just get out of there.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was borderline traumatized. I was all sick and shaky for a long time. part of me is still waiting to see if food poisoning kicks in. I did finally go down to guest services and tell them about the situation. They look suitably horrified and said they would look into the matter and talk to the appropriate people.

in hindsight, I wish I had taken a picture for proof. I mean it was bad.

So I ended up skipping lunch because I just wasn't hungry anymore and that wasn't great because I had also skipped breakfast.

in any case that was the one bad part of today and there's been a lot of good things. More soon, the beloved aqua show is getting ready to start! Some quick photos.

PS: the chocolate covered strawberries were left in my room, I think it's a gift because I'm an emerald level member. (That turned into my belated lunch!)

I am glad your embarkation was uneventful. I am sorry about the bad dining experience. The bloody chicken is awful.

I board Mariner tomorrow and I was served raw chicken when I was last on her in Jan 2022. It was the fried chicken, and all my chicken was raw, the server was so astonished. It does give you major anxiety because all you can think is salmonella!

Well, exactly! I mean... if it was just a little too pink and I was a little uncomfortable eating it, that would be one thing. But a raw piece of chicken with a pool of blood in the middle is just horrifying. That's never happened to me in any restaurant anywhere. there's not a chance I'm going back to the solarium. I would have to assume somebody in charge of the food back there isn't on top of their game.

OK. Now onto the positives.

A super easy embarkation. Like I said, I purchased The Key this time, so when I arrived at Port and saw the giant masses in a huge snakey line even though it was only 1030, I didn't worry about it. I went to The Key line, which was empty. There was a football player-ish young man, an extremely big person, in charge of manning the entrance to The Key line. He started to tell me I had to wait for the rest of my party, caught himself, and then asked, "it is just you?" I said yes I'm by myself. He looked surprised, but he politely let me pass. I breezed through security and went to a special waiting area with the other Key-ers and only had to wait a little while till 11 o'clock when they let us all on. The Key people were allowed on the ship first and then came the 11 o'clock boarding group behind us.

The ship was delightfully empty for about two hours and I ran around looking at everything while it was empty, taking pictures to show everybody, taking video. For example the gym and the solarium will never ever be empty again the entire rest of the cruise, I got great video walking around those areas while they were empty. I checked out all the food venues, the bars, the promenade, everything.

It's been overcast and cloudy and dark all day and unfortunately it began to rain hard around 4 o'clock right before we sailed away. There were still a fun festive party vibe on deck. People crowded the windows just under the pool deck and some people braved the rain to stand up on top and watch the other ships sail past. I was one of those people. Everyone seemed excited. This feels very much like a sold out ship.

You know how Miami is… You sail all the way down to the bridge and then you do a 180 and then you sail out to sea. That was a fun and drawn-out process. We got a good look at an MSC ship, a Norwegian ship, and a Virgin ship. I don't think the Virgin ships are very pretty, this one was completely gray with red trim. It reminded me of a gray military ship. The Norwegian ship had a raucous throbbing musical party pounding from the top deck despite the rain. someone was on a loudspeaker conducting some sort of dance contest.  People were whooping it up and cheering and shouting and you could tell they were having a blast over there.

I spent the day unpacking my bags and exploring the ship. I find myself constantly comparing Oasis to Symphony. And that's just not fair. It's like comparing the really old faithful family dog to the flashy new thoroughbred across the street at the race track. I mean, Oasis is a terrific ship, but it feels old to me. It feels a little dated and musty and a little worn at the seams. That is, compared to symphony. If I had never been on symphony or I've never been on an oasis class ship ever, I think I'd be in love.

But what I learned today is that apparently, Symphony has ruined me for all other oasis class ships. She's just so shiny and magnificent. And it helps that I had an amazing cruise on that ship, we went to Italy and Spain and France and I built amazing memories with my son, we had perfect weather and gorgeous sunsets and everything else you could possibly want from a European cruise, and Symphony was the perfect ship for that. So it's completely unfair to compare symphony With day one on oasis but that's what I kept doing all day. And even though Oasis is amazing, she does come up short compared to Symphony.

but that is most definitely comparing apples to oranges and I need to cut that out.

My balcony room overlooking central Park is very nice. Very nice indeed and I love the view, especially at night. I will say that it's not cool enough for my liking. I've got the air-conditioning cranked all the way as cold as it will go and it is not going to get any cooler than this and it's just barely cool enough. But I've been in cruise ship cabins that never get cool enough so I'll take it.

my room attendant introduced himself and he is super nice and super professional of course. I've never had a bad room attendant on any cruise ship anywhere. Have you guys? He explained that they only clean the room once a day and let me choose morning or evening and I chose morning.

After the fun and excitement of sail away, I finished unpacking and then I went to the hair salon and got my hair done. I always get a keratin treatment when I cruise. My hairstylist was named Lovely, isn't that just the best name? She did a super job.

I was pretty hungry so I went up to Windjammer. I had planned to either go to Playmakers tonight or the main dining room, but the evening got away from me and everything felt scattered and I just wanted to grab something quick. I asked for a veggie burger which they make fresh while you wait. I had the veggie burger, a baked potato and some vegetables, and a really great piece of cake.

Then it was time for the aqua theater show and my last blog entry was made while I sat there waiting for it to start. Right after I finished that entry, they canceled the show. It was the right call because even though it had stopped raining, it's been very windy and the ship is rocking quite a bit.

I went to the casino and turned $40 into about two hours worth of slot machine play. And when I walked out I was only down two dollars. So that was a fun evening.

The shops here are nice, smaller than the shops on allure and symphony, but nice. Starbucks was hopping tonight and Café promenade stayed busy.

I have taken a look inside studio B and the royal theater and they're both gorgeous.

I think I mentioned that there are 800 people on the cruise who play a game called dice Tower, and they are on a group cruise. As I was leaving the casino one of their events let out of studio B, which is where they normally hold ice-skating shows. So all 800 of them came streaming out right when I needed an elevator because I wasn't willing to walk up 10 flights of stairs. But I ended up taking the stairs. 😊 They all seemed really happy and I heard someone saying that this was a much better group cruise than the last one they did.

When I left the casino I was exhausted. We've had so much going on at home for the last few weeks that most nights I am up till midnight and then up again in the morning at 5:30. I am looking forward to getting plenty of rest along the way over the next two weeks of cruising. hoping for some good weather tomorrow. We are docking in Nassau. It's not that I'm anxious to get off the ship and have good weather in Nassau it's just that I would like to spend a good part of the day on the pool deck relaxing in the sun.  I'm planning to get up early and hopefully see the sunrise though, maybe get footage of the sail in and maybe some of the other ships coming and docking beside us. I would like to explore the new port just a little bit and then come back to the ship and lay around the rest of the day.

The ship has been rocking quite a bit for hours but fortunately it's not bothering me. My closet is rattling so I'm probably going to go slide it open and see if that helps.

I am most definitely looking forward to the next six days!

Yes, and no. I completely feel the same as you. I like "shiny and new" and "modern" decor. Oasis rooms do look a bit dated. However, I love Portside BBQ on Oasis, which SY does not have. And Oasis has the best crew, which cannot be beat. So now that I have sailed all Oasis class ships (except UT), I would personally rank them: Wonder, SY/OA, HM, AL.

Our day in Nassau was wonderful. I explored the port in the morning, had breakfast on my balcony, and spent the whole afternoon on the pool deck soaking in the hot tub and laying in the sun and repeating. I enjoyed myself so much I didn't want to bother getting dressed and having lunch so I didn't. I did get a virgin piña colada though.

Took a long nap in the afternoon and then back to the pool deck to watch people using the Flow Rider, watch the sunset, watch the other ships sail away, watch people riding the roller coaster right next to us on the deck of the Mardi Gras, and then watch sail away.

I actually rode the abyss slide down to Boardwalk as a shortcut, and then searched for a seat at the giant football watch party at playmakers. Not a seat to be had so I'm over in spotlight lounge watching it on the big screen. Lots of enthusiasm and the place is full.

The little shopping area at the cruise port in Nassau is very nice. And it's really not that little either.

Reservations for the ice show tonight, and my Aqua show reservations from last night got bumped to tonight, so there's going to be only a few minutes between the two. But I can always see it another night of needed. And I would like to revisit the casino. 😊

That is hilarious! I'll have to keep it in mind. Are a lot of these pics the ones you took right after boarding - that is why everything is so empty? How long would you say it took for things to start to fill up? I wouldn't mind trying the flowrider once before there are a ton of people there watching...

Yes, I boarded at 11 and I hurried to take photos and video of the normally crowded areas such as the solarium and the pool deck and gym and stuff. I also got up at 6:30 this morning and was able to get lots of pool deck photos without anybody in them. I would say that after we boarded it took about two hours before all of the corners of the ship began to fill up. Within three hours of them opening boarding at 11, everything was packed.

A super busy evening and here I am going to bed at 1 AM like I’m in my 40s or something. 😊

I ended up skipping dinner this evening. I had a nice lunch from Windjammer and brought it back to my balcony again like I did for breakfast, but what can I say, having a balcony is pretty cool. I spent the afternoon on the pool deck, had my nap, and then got so caught up in the football game party that I ran out of time to eat dinner. Right after the football game was the ice-skating show, and that was followed by the aqua show. Both were terrific!

because I have The Key this time, I had reserved seating in the third row of the ice show. Which was nice. I sat near the end of the row. A really big guy and his wife sat beside me on the very end. I mention that detail because it’s important to know that this guy was tall enough to where his knees went all the way to the chair in front of him, and there was no room to walk past him if you needed to squeeze out of the aisle.

A family of eight people came and filed passed me and took up the entire center of the row, which was perfectly fine, except that each family member decided to get up and go to the restroom and then come back, one at a time, throughout the entire show. I mean every five minutes one of them was climbing over all of the legs between them and the exit of the aisle. It was constant. I would always stand up, rather than have them climb over me, and the guy next to me definitely had to stand up and his wife did too so we were constantly popping up and down. The people behind us were getting pretty aggravated.

At one point both the father and one of the kids got up because the kid could not possibly wait to get popcorn until after the show. Mom scrolled her phone at full brightness the entire time they were gone while the ice skaters were doing amazing acrobatics right in front of her and she didn’t even see it. Then the kid with his popcorn came back without his dad. Eventually, dad came back. Exactly 2 minutes later the entire family got up and all left in mass while the show was still going in its final minutes. It was unbelievably ridiculous. If they knew they had somewhere to be and they couldn’t sit still why didn’t they sit in the back?

The second the ice-skating show was over people were just crushing and running to get to the aqua show and grab a seat. And I mean, I get being excited to see it, but we’re here all week, no need to stampede.

I enjoyed the ice-skating show and the aqua show a lot. After the aqua show, I went to the casino for a while and by the time I finished up there it was time for the second aqua show of the evening so I went a second time. Now I here I am coming to bed at 1 AM and I’m so tired. Tomorrow is perfect day at Coco cay, so no need to rush off the ship.

All in all, it was a really nice day and having such a nice weather helped!

Apparently I'm losing my mind. Today I came back from Cocoa Cay super hot and sweaty and couldn't wait to get in the shower. Stood in the middle of my room and peeled off all the clothes from the waist up and started to peel off the clothes from the waist down and a voice in my head said, "Hey, you have a balcony and the curtains are OPEN."

Fortunately, this was a sliver of time when the balconies across from me weren't crammed with people just sitting and staring, so I lucked out.

Anyway,  it's been a great first half of the day. We have picture perfect weather for Coco Cay. We are here with Freedom of the seas. Everything is packed, as to be expected, but there are still plenty of pool chairs and lounge chairs to go around. I was chatting with a staff member at Spotlight lounge bar, and he commented that last week or a few days ago maybe, Icon of the seas and Wonder of the seas docked at Coco Cay on the same day. Can you imagine?

Today I took all of the classic photos which I will share here. I had a wonderful morning on the beach, got super hot, and scurried back to the ship to rest up. I have to get ready for my massage this afternoon. 😅😅

Quick question for you guys. How do you find out where and when the pop-up piano player is going to be around? Or is that the whole point, you just never know?

Last night I was thrilled to end up in the elevator with him. I have been looking for him on every oasis-class cruise I've taken and never run into him before. That guy can play! In all honesty I just wanted to ride the elevator around with him listening until he was done playing, but I felt self-conscious about it. Such fun music though. He had a tip jar but of course I had zero cash with me.

While I was headed to chill beach on Coco Cay, I got behind a large family of one mom and five or six adult kids. Mom was in a rage because part of the group had separated and she was absolutely convinced they would never find each other and it was going to be a terrible horrible day. She was snapping and pretty much shouting repeatedly at her kids who as I said, are adults. She was really spreading that bad mood around to everybody else and everybody seemed upset that she was so angry, her oldest son was trying to placate her, but she wasn't having any of that. She wanted to be angry.

I thought, here it is 9 AM, they all have these huge beach bags for a big long day on the beach, and everybody was expecting to have fun, and now that's not going to happen because mom is angry and is NOT going to get over it.

I mean I know I'm preaching to the choir here. But when you're on family vacation you can make bad memories for your kids just as easily as good ones. I've been that uptight person who tries to micromanage everybody and make sure the day goes like I picture it in my head. It never does.  Just don't be that person. Let it all go. Especially if you're dealing with adult kids. If they are a bunch of scattered cats let them be. Tag along and settle into a lounge chair and enjoy your family while you have them and let them figure out the solution to whatever the problem is. Let them text each other all day long trying to sort out who's where, and you just be the positive happy person in the cruise memories they look back on years and years from now. Don't spoil the day being a grump over nothing.

i've had such wonderful vacations with my sons and I would give anything to have those years back where they would go with me everywhere. Of course they're all adults now with jobs, their own lives, and nobody has the time to do anything. I did get to cruise with my son last spring in the Mediterranean and it was just priceless. I had a couple of days where I was tired and fatigued but you better be sure I never snapped at him, I didn't want that one memory to go home with him.

Anyway, that kind of stuff always bothers me more than it should. it would've been so easy for her to keep her thoughts to herself until she cooled off and not set the tone for the whole day by being in a boiling rage. I know sometimes that's easier said than done but… You're on vacation at a beach. Maybe just take a breath.
