Wifi calling on Starlink

Prior to using Starlink I was able to make wifi calls and receive text on my Samsung galaxy s21 with no issues. I was just on Oasis and no text or wifi calling. It keeps saying remove airplane mode. Now I'm Grandeur and it's the same thing. I was able to get my text on Odyssey and Harmony in Nov. Anyone know what the problem is?

Is it possible you don't have wifi calling enabled? I've had it get disabled when I travel before.  And you can't re-enable wifi calling without being on a cellular network.

I did that on the terminal while waiting to board and it worked on terminal wifi. But as soon as I tried on Grandeur,  it no longer does.

I can’t speak to Oasis but GRANDEUR is the worst,  just gif off that ship 2 weeks ago.  They DO NOT have star link.  Allegedly it will be installed sometime in February.
their WiFi was a joke.  No connection in my ov stateroom.  Complaints led to a verification and a move, 4 cabins down without assistance, to a cabin that had equally shitty service despite then saying it worked there.  Guest services told me “none of our ships allow phone calls unless you are not in WiFi mode. “  ridiculous.  You know where I could call? At guest services.  The internet person, Jingle, credited me with 2 days internet . I needed the service for work and contact with home., not a 2 day credit! Good luck!

We are in an aft interior on deck 8 on our 2-5-23 Grandeur sailing, too (8587 I think).  Absolutely nothing was available to upgrade.  Oh well…This is one of Dan’s onboard instant rewards casino comps.

The rooms are so tiny. This was an instant comp for me too. I'm a single chubby woman, I can't imagine two regular people in these tiny cabins being comfortable.

The one and only time we were ever in an inside room was on Grandeur a few years ago so I (unfortunately) know how tiny they really are.  I am going to have the room steward separate the beds (tough luck, Danno).  At least we will be able to get in and out of bed.  Last time, I did an award-winning back-facing sidewinder double-gainer off the end of the bed and landed on my knee….so not this time !

Starlink is in a new service that isn't done being built.  Starlink Maritime is even newer and less built out than Starlink residential.

Delays getting Starship flying are impacting where SpaceX wanted Starlink to be in early 2023.  Until Starship flies Starlink will have issues in busy areas like the US Southeast and Starlink's maritime service will not be what anyone hoped it would be.

Give it 6 to 12 months and Starlink maritime will be much better compared to what it is today.

@Ampurp85I’m on the Anthem…with StarLink…and I have an old Samsung Galaxy S8 Android.
My experience…emails/texts and web surfing are fine with only occasional drop offs followed by automatic reconnects. Especially during stormy times.
I use Messenger for WiFi calling (audio and video) and it works pretty good, even in my cabin on deck 9 forward. I also stream videos on my iPad at night and they (usually) work fine. But I think it’s primarily because the Anthem was built with connectivity in mind. So the WiFi hardware throughout the ship is pretty robust compared to the older ships. The ship can have great StarLink service, but if the routers inside the ship can’t handle the amount of WiFi traffic…it’s not going to work well.

By the way…I heard a man trying to explain to his kids what a VCR was. As far as they were concerned, it was ancient technology.🤣

12:00…12:00…12:00…12:00…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had no issues with wifi calling on our Jan 5th cruise on the Adventure, that has StarLink on it.  In our group there was mix of iPhone's, Samsung, and Google phones,  all were able to do wifi calling with no issues.  There were of course areas that the wifi was weak, but that's to be expected.    This was our first cruise on a StarLink equipped ship, and we were very impressed.  We were able to stream videos, view home security cameras, VPN, etc...  way better connectivity and lower latency than the previous systems.

I'll frequently say that I'm going to "tape" something when I'm going to record a show on the DVR and get confused looks from my teens...

The funniest is when someone tries to propose the idea of having some type of magical public phone available for a fee in case you forget or lose your cell phone.
