MuttMutt
Did a search and didn't see a topic so figured may as well start one. Anyway found some video posted online about the accident this morning to tie in with the front page post. The pilot just had a REALLY bad day is all I can say. Glad no one is hurt but have to imagine they will need to put some divers in the water to inspect the hull and azipods and where they are at the water is muddy so not much vis to see what happened. I suspect that will happen at another stop where water conditions are clearer for a better idea of the actual damage. smokeybandit
How does no one on the bridge notice what was going on? You can hear the screams from the passengers knowing what's about to happen. The captain or some other officer was likely still in control at that point, even with a pilot on board bobroo
LovetoCruise87
Seriously?!?!? How many times do they do this, have done this? It's not like it was a new pier they were pulling into!!
LovetoCruise87
Wednesday was a day at sea, and today the ship docked in Falmouth, Jamaica at approximately 7 a.m. The collision happened during docking, when the ship knocked into a piling, causing what was determined to be cosmetic damage only to the vessel, though the dock more significantly damaged. “During arrival into Falmouth, Jamaica, Harmony of the Seas made contact with an extension part of the dock,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement provided to Cruise Hive. LovetoCruise87
The docking procedure continued and there was no lengthy delay for the ship to be cleared and guests allowed to debark to enjoy their day on the beautiful tropical island. The affected part of the ship was thoroughly inspected, and no structural damage was found. “There were no injuries to guests or crew and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing will continue as scheduled,” Royal Caribbean said.

JohnK6404
... at least (knock on wood) they didn't have a fire today (Carnival Freedom)... or some sort of chemical fume issue (Carnival Magic)... WAYNO
And my Wife is on Harmony in 10 days! It just seems, throughout the industry we're hearing about more fender benders. Is it because social media makes such events impossible to hide? Or are the pressures of cutting corners, tight schedules and fuel conservation, as well as staff shortages taking a toll? MuttMutt
IMHO the smokestack fire on the carnival ship is similar to a chimney fire. The particulate can catch fire as it is oily but usually doesn't since the exhaust doesn't have enough O2 to get going. That equates to a failure in the maintenance department. WAYNO
Actually, in fairness, she's cruising with her brother. He would never otherwise have cruised on his own, and now he'll have his own personal tour guide. I'm thankful for her opportunity, and one of these days I'll tag along again too. We have endured so many cancellations with cruises, cruise offers, conveniently forgotten promises by Casino Royale, and cancelled travel arrangements over the last couple years, it's easier to now sit back and watch. It is largely about the Suez Canal incident and nothing about cruising but it may interest folks here: AlmondFarmer and teddy 1

As of Monday 5/23, Johnny Faevelen is on vacation in Florida. (Whomever it is, it's not likely he/she will be captaining an Oasis class ship again anytime soon!) I'm not sure how long before the impact they realized that they had miscalculated, but obviously not with enough time to avoid all impact. I would expect that you would see the output from the azipods pretty quickly when they figure out what is happening. If you watch the video you can see not long after impact the outflow really picks up. I suspect they didn't really know they were that close. Might be time for RCCL to install backup cameras on their ships. Cars are pretty small in comparison and a ton of new cars have them for a reason. It says pilot error but then says the pilot "was badly directed while steering the ship in to be docked"
AlmondFarmer
Harmony Bridge crew could have been involuntarily “under the influence” A “contact high” is very possible that close to Jamaica. I have been to no other island where this explanation is possible.
