Learning How to Play Slot Machine Games

I spent time in the casino on our recent cruise watching my spouse play video poker.  I really would have loved to spend time playing the slot machines, but don't know how to play and am too intimidated to practice with real money (or ask anyone - everyone seems so serious!!).  I tried reading the descriptions on the machine, but that wasn't helpful to me.  So, my question is - how do I learn to play?  I did put $20 in a machine and "accidentally" lost it all on one play because I had no idea what I was doing and must have hit max bet.  I have attended a couple of slot pulls, so I do kind of understand how that game works (I think it was Wheel or Fortune), but don't really understand the other games that people look so knowledgable playing.

Does anyone have recommendations for slots (and the name of the game) that I can see if there is a "how to play" YouTube video or other recommendation so I can get a little smarter?  Starter slot suggestion?   How did you learn?

Thanks!

YouTube will be a good resource. There are plenty of “slot influencers” who post multiple times daily. My personal favorites are Vegas Matt and also Lady Luck HD. The idea is simple, put cash in the machine, select denomination, press the button until your finger is numb (don’t forget to put your seapass card in the machine to get points which can be valuable). Good luck

Based on my observations walking through the casino-

step 1- light cigarette

step 2- push flashing button (apparently pulling handle is too strenuous)

step 3- smile or curse depending on outcome

step 4- return to step 1

I hope this tutorial is helpful.

When I decided to try slots, as opposed to my tables, I sat at a machine that was a “set of 4 of the same machine”. I asked the lady next to me what I needed to know and she was very kind.  When I hit the feature I had to make a decision  on which bonus to play and she told me what she usually did.  So I did it.  She was super sweet.  Most slot players will tell you what they know about the machine.  I will say my hand accidentally touched max bet, thankfully I won $700🤣. So be careful about which buttons you push,

Some slot machines will say you need to be playing max bet to get the jackpots shown, its in small print on the screen.
Press the menu button and it will show you the payout situations.

Be sure you are on 1 penny  on your bet unless you wanted to play more money

2 cent machines are double the cost of the button you push so if you are  playing a 2 cent machine bet at 50 credits a spin if will he $1.00 per spin not 50 cents like s 1 cent machine would be

I miss the handle, I used to like alternating between the button and the handle- made me feel like I was changing it up, lol. Most of the new machines don't even have them or they're just cosmetic.

I agree about watching a YouTube video or two, approaching the casino host for some assistance, and most of all, choose a slot machine where the bets are one penny or two pennies or at most, $.80 per turn. Ask your casino host to show you which ones those are. Mashing the button over and over and watching the machine do its thing for only a penny or two per turn is a great way to begin to understand how things work. Slot machines are a lot of fun and addictive, I stayed out of the casino for over 10 years but got into it last year and now I love those slot machines. My problem is I never walk away after I've won big.

I have tried to find the 3 roll slot machines that are $0.25 bets and have a max play of 3 to 5 coins (meaning $0.75 to $1.25 per pull). You can look at the top glass and see the payouts for 1, 2 or all 3 (or up to 5) bets.  Keeps the money going a little longer 🙂

But those are getting fewer and fewer as new multi-line video machines are taking over the space.  When they are all gone, I'll be solely a video poker player.

I hate to be "that guy", but there is no strategy with any slots or electronic games.

Your fate is sealed once you hit the button or pull the arm.  A chip called a random number generator decides if you won, how much you won and all the literal bells and whistles are to keep your attention.

But I agree with what Matt said, if you want to learn how to make a specific amount, just ask the casino host, they will GLADLY help you part with your money.

I agree that there is no strategy that will help once you hit the button, and that each spin is an independent event, but there are general strategies that can help you pick machines to play.  Assuming your goal is to get the most casino points to reach prime status for example, you would target machines that have less volatility to hopefully stretch the number of points you collect for each dollar you put in.  If your goal is to try and make a profit, you would hunt for a progressive jackpot where the jackpot level pays more than the expected odds.  These goals can only be accomplished by understanding the different games and their payout tables.  Also, some games have "enhancers" that may either be beneficial to the player or they may be just sucker bets aimed to take your money more quickly.  A good slot strategy will be the difference between just losing your money quickly with little benefit vs losing your money slowly and benefiting from things like casino comps, free drinks, and free cruises.

We play the penny slots purely for the sound effects. You dont see them much anymore but we always looked for Miss Kitty and Texas Tornado. Now usually dancing drums. Usually grouped in sets of 3 as progressive slots.

I found the slot machines to be confusing. An employee showed me how to put my Seapass card in the machine, use my birthday as my PIN, and add credits to my account. That was easy enough, but after I added $20 to my casino account and I selected that I wanted each spin to be worth $1, the screen that appeared immediately after that which said, "9 ways to win!" that transformed my $1 spin into a $9 spin was a complete surprise. All my money was gone after two button presses.

The best recommendation IMHO is to figure out what you want from gambling and the casino. The slots are very user friendly and require little to no effort to play. If you are looking for status to get discounts, “free drinks” exc then a hefty bankroll is a must.

This is true. I only “fast spin” which basically amounts to dumping a heap into a machine and pressing the button as fast as a slot tournament. It absolutely does not matter as the reels don’t have time to physically give the illusion of a spin. IMHO it’s more exciting this way as I have zero patience. Attached are some highlights from Symphony last week (+$13k):

You have all the luck that I'm missing! Congrats!! haha

Normally my bank roll is $500 or less, so I'll probably never benefit from Casino Royale points.  I currently have a $50 off a cruise from them right now haha

My wife likes playing the slots. I found it more cost effective to just buy a bunch of slot machines and put them in my games room 🙂

In 2024 you can play every one of these games on an iPhone which is even more cost effective!
