Bob_KY reacted to TXcruzer in Cruise and Stateroom shows available on CostcoTravel but sold out on Official Royal Caribbean Website
IMHO there is NEVER a good reason to book with Royal Caribbean directly.
Travel agencies offer so much more in benefits.

Bob_KY reacted to FionaMG in When is a port not where it is advertised (eg Ravenna 3 hours by road from venice)
To a certain extent, I agree with you but I don't feel that they are being sufficiently transparent and I am inclined to believe this is probably a deliberate ploy to make the itineraries more attractive. How many more people are likely to book a cruise that goes to Venice and Athens than to Ravenna and Pireus?
All it would take would be to add the word "for" in the port line, e.g. Ravenna, *for* Venice, to alert people to the fact that they aren't actually porting in those well-known places. This would allow customers to make a more informed decision before they book rather than discover afterwards.

Always book as early as possible to pay the best price and have the best selection.

Bob_KY reacted to smokeybandit in What to do with a bad stateroom attendant?
Go talk to guest services. It is always best to deal with an onboard issue while still on board.

Bob_KY reacted to Matt in Quick question - Do European cruises use USD or EUR onboard?
USD.
When I was in Europe it's all they worked with. They accepted Euros as a deposit at the casino, but everything was done in USD.
I even asked the casino cashier if I could exchange to Euros and they said no.

Bob_KY reacted to cruisellama in What are your favorite specialty restaurants on Apex?
I wonder if it's fleet wide? IMO Le Petit Chef provided for a unique presentation (food and characters running across your plate.) But I was never impressed with the food. Maybe this is a more serious, upscale menu.

Bob_KY got a reaction from Jill in What are your favorite specialty restaurants on Apex?
For consideration. We loved the specialty restaurants on Celebrity. I am assuming you are not retreat level (if so, getting reservations at the times you want will not be an issue - plus the Luminae is awesome). For my March 2025 celebrity cruise, I was able to reserve my 3 specialty restaurants at the times I wanted by individual purchases. I caught different sales - alleviated all worries with late dinners and show/entertainment conflicts. Surprisingly, not that much more than the dining package.
Be aware of "special dining experiences." On our Apex cruise, we were able to purchase a Veuve Clicquot (our favorite champagne vineyard) pairing dinner. We were blown away.
Enjoy!!!!

I second @SebagoSue on the Rooftop Garden Grill as one of the three.

All of the above, but we put our cash in multiple places. No single point for a total loss.

Bob_KY reacted to PhillyLady in Buyer Beware (onboard Jewelry)
So sorry that this happened to you. If you are going to make costly jewelry purchases, especially diamonds, it is important to be prepared--ask to see the stones through a loupe so you can examine them closely. Ask it they have any certificates or are laser-inscribed. Sadly, even the diamond tester pens cannot tell lab-grown diamonds from natural diamonds--and there is a definite difference in the value between those two.
Moissanite is a lab-grown stone, and its resale value is much lower than the retail cost. Maybe the stone was substituted by accident, but nevertheless you should get what you paid for. I, personally, do not purchase or wear lab-grown stones.
By the way, I love jewelry, and I find most jewelry on cruise ships highly overpriced, although nice to see. The last time I bought a piece of jewelry on a cruise was from the Effy store in Nassau a few decades ago. Macy's has much better prices on Effy these days, but overall in my opinion the Effy brand has gone down (less gold weight, too many single cut diamonds, overly treated colored stones). I have never heard of Regalia.
I hope AMEX approves your dispute. You should be able to return the earrings, or at the minimum get credit for them for something else. Best wishes!

Bob_KY reacted to BrianB in Last Minute Balance Due Mistake!
Update…
Sure enough, as expected, today I received the ‘balance due’ email.
Having nothing better to do I called again and explained the situation yet again. I’m getting pretty good at explaining this in short, easily understandable and precise terms.
This time I spoke with Paulo. He reviewed my reservation and ensured me it was paid in full. He then researched the history of the reservation and found all the back and forth balance due and refund activity. He placed me on hold for about ten minutes as he reached out for someone who could help. He came back and explained what I already knew…the amount was for a cancelled CocoCay purchase but was being mistakenly carried as a cruise fare amount.
He then explained that the issue is being corrected and the amount is being separated from the cruise fare. Then…I should make the payment again and then a refund will be issued back to my card. This action will finally clear the ‘glitch’.
I made the payment and then held on as he checked to make sure the amount was separated. He came back and told me it worked.
I received yet another cruise confirmation receipt showing I’m paid in full. I’ll add it to the pile.
Fingers crossed….🤞

Bob_KY reacted to FionaMG in Last Minute Balance Due Mistake!
Fear of this glitch is precisely why I have an extra voom package that I don't need for my Anthem cruise next month. Since the price went down inside final payment (of course 🙄) I bought a second one in DD's name rather than cancel the one in my name and repurchase. I'll cancel it on board and it will go to OBC.

If you know what time you are going to wake up you just order your coffee the night before. There are tags in your cabin to fill out the continental breakfast for the next morning for free. I never do it because I have no idea what time I will wake up. 🙂

Bob_KY reacted to teddy in Travel Agent vs. Next Cruise?
We got a Book Later certificate while on Explorer last October (2023) in anticipation of the 2025 European itineraries being released before the end of the year. We play the odds on non-refundable deposits, and $100 pp makes it even sweeter
We like to book as soon as itineraries are released (yes, we get up in the middle of the night) then transfer the booking to our travel agent. I know our agent can book for us, but it’s something we like to do. It’s part of the fun of planning an our next European vacation.
Anyway, we had to sign papers at Next Cruise in order to keep the cruise from going automatically to our travel agent. It was kinda a pita to be honest. The Next Cruise rep kept asking us why we didn’t like our travel agent and was baffled when we said we loved our TA.
We made the mistake of trying to explain to the crew member what our plans were….the language barrier was real. She couldn’t understand why we wanted to book a European cruise for 2025 ourselves and transfer the booking instead of just having our travel agent do it. She also didn’t understand why we would possibly think the 2025 Europe cruises would come out in November or December 2023. The whole thing was a big cf.
fwiw, we used the certificate on November 8th to book a cruise to Spain in September 2025 and transferred the booking to our TA with no issues.

Bob_KY reacted to Mike n Ky in Travel Agent vs. Next Cruise?
When we book at Next they confirm the travel agent we use and include her on the booking. The last booking we did had to be changed a few weeks after and our TA contacted RC and took care of it. Our TA encourages using Next for the lower down payment and onboard credit then she takes care of the rest.

Bob_KY reacted to Lovetocruise2002 in Travel Agent vs. Next Cruise?
You can do both! Book at Next Cruise and get the extra OBC then transfer to a TA within 60 days to reap whatever extra benefits they provide. Best of both worlds.
Personally, it would depend what I am booking. If I notice something for a cabin category where there is not a lot of selection for, I will not wait for Next Cruise. I will grab it right away with my TA. If it is a cabin category where there is a lot selection (or if I am not in a rush to book), then I will book with Next Cruise and transfer it to my TA.
I have even had an existing booking, then get on board and book the same sailing in the the same category to get the extra OBC, and cancel my old booking (without the the NC OBC) and move back to the same room number I originally had with the new Next Cruise reservation lol.

Bob_KY reacted to CruisingNewb in RCCL Alaska Cruise from Hell
LOL! I just had to respond, if not for the OP, for any other disgruntled cruisers that might read this post.
1. The quoted advertisement for the Dawes Glacier does not guaranty that the ship will get inches from the glacier. It does not even say the ship will stay near the glacier for the entire day. It takes the ship about 30 minutes to navigate into the bay, then the ship turns round and round so that people on all sides of the ship can see the glacier, then it takes another 30 or so minutes to "run away" as the OP puts it. The glacier is 600 feet tall. How close do you need to be to see it? So if anyone decides to wake up late and complains that they could not see the glacier, that is on them.
2. The entry had kiosks selling merchandise. Imagine that!
3. App messaging was slow? You are on the ocean in Alaska. Take a break from the phone and enjoy the scenery.
4. Solarium was cold? Its indoors with jacuzzis and tons of people. Unlikely. Plus, Alaska is cold, in case no one told you.
5. Tilapia is not my favorite fish, but it is sustainable, can take on many flavors, and Tilapia is rich in niacin, vitamin B12, phosphorus, selenium and potassium. You find it disgusting? Okay, RCCL do you hear that? OP finds it disgusting, change the menu ASAP!
6. Soft serve ice cream only available after 11:30 am and you cannot serve yourself? Oh my...I think that having soft serve ice cream for breakfast may be an indicator that you should NOT be able to serve yourself.
7. No food available after excursions. Only Sorrentos and sandwiches. So which is it? No food or some food?
8. The Room Attendant carts have tissue boxes. Can't believe for a second you could not get tissue.
9. The rooms were clean once a day. Oh my...do you clean your room more than once a day? or even once a day? You tripped over your luggage? That is why you unpack neatly, stow the luggage under the bed.
10. Never enough towels? What on earth are you doing that requires so many towels?

Bob_KY reacted to Pattycruise in RCCL Alaska Cruise from Hell
When we had Icy Straight as a stop in early May we did the free gondola. We explored the free cannery museum, which is there in port. Then we chose to pay the $5 for the shuttle as opposed to walking the mile along the waterfront to go and check out the town, which was quite small. The shuttle drivers were a delight, listening to how the town has under 900 in population-wow! I’d never seen so many bald eagles in one place either!! Did you see the starfish in the water right off the bridge from the ship! All different colors! Amazing! I stopped in at the local brewery for a beer that was fantastic.
On my second visit (back to back on Radiance) we ate in one of the restaurants off the ship, didn’t have to pay the shuttle to get there. Delicious food, better than the Tracey’s which is right off the pier in Juneau. Oh, and there’s a cute little mini donut shop run by or poceeds go to the Salvation Army-made fresh just for you!
The guy in town working on a totem pole-free to watch (donations appreciated)and he talks to you -was amazing. He’d made several totem poles for the town. I learned from one of the town residents he used to be the art teacher (and other subjects that escape me) in their school. Icy straight photos attached.
I don’t think I’d ever choose a large ship to visit Alaska. The inside passage is amazing. I sailed Radiance 5 years ago in July and chose to do it again. Of course if I had the lousy time you did I don’t think I’d recommend it to anyone.
yes, we skipped Skagway on my first sailing of the back to back. Very disappointing, but the dock is still not fixed from the landslide last year-so those decisions are made week to week as to which ships can’t port. unfortunately both you and I had a sailing that didn’t get to stop there.
hopefully you put a more concise complaint on your survey.
