pcvchristine reacted to AspiringCruisePlanner in New Pfizer COVID-19 PILL
These are preliminary results from the Phase 2/3 clinical trial of the drug. I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as a small study. Also, the fact that they are stopping further clinical trial research based on independent expert recomendation due to the overwhelming positive results, I think it's safe to say that this antiviral has shown enough benefit to be granted emergency authorization.
True, but it's reasonable to predict that the outcomes for vaccinated people would show even less hospitalization and death rates based on the proven low rates for those who are vaccinated. That's likely why high-risk, unvaccinated patients were selected for the trial. Validate the effectiveness of the drug for those most at risk for severe symptoms.

Saw this news today. 90% reduction is a game changer! Every breakthrough is one step closer to getting back to normal!
    I like this section:
Study participants were unvaccinated, with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, and were considered high risk for hospitalization due to health problems like obesity, diabetes or heart disease.
I feel that if this gets FDA approval and gets widespread availability and use soon which ultimately leads to significant reduction in hospitalizations and deaths, COVID no longer becomes a crisis. Hopefully, then masking and testing requirements would become less relevant. Heck, the flu could prove to be more deadly than COVID once these pills become available.
Am I being to hopeful thinking that this should have an impact on the timeline of reducing mandates in the cruise industry? Or is this going to have a similar outcome as the vaccines where enough of the population won't trust the medicine to make enough of an impact on hospitalizations and deaths?

This is an interesting read, thank you for sharing it. Especially the recounting of situations where people boarded ships despite knowing they were symptomatic and later causing a number of breakthrough infections. Unfortunately, some people are just not going to do the right thing, so I understand why both the cruise lines and the CDC want certain protocols in place.

Thank you, this helps! I work for an airline, so that means free bags. yay. But this one, is in LA, so we are driving to it.  Check in time is at 1130. So,  I think I am going to have my husband and I share one large checked bag, and each take a backpack for carry on.
Is it easy to check a bag? Just print out bag tag, and give it to the porter when we get there?

I would still probably drop off my bag at the terminal, and take a small bag of large purse with the things you’ll need for the afternoon.
Otherwise, you’ll have to carry you stuff around with you until your room opens.
If your check-in time is around 2 pm or later, it might make more sense to carry on, since your room should be ready by then.

For the Freedom out of Miami, we had 11:30 check in.  We arrived about 11:15 and were astounded to see that there was no 11:30 line--just a 12:30-1:30 line.  Not a big deal, but just odd.  Some others were a little snippy about it, but it was just a little goofy in our opinion.

I read elsewhere that this email went out inadvertently to Anthem passengers sailing out of Bayonne. It’s based on the UK protocols (notice that it mentions the UK 2 day requirement), and doesn’t actually apply to US sailings.

I fully expect kids will be required to be vaccinated after a delay to allow people to get their shots. Richard Fain has always put out that vaccines are the way to get back to "normal cruising" so I don't expect him to back down from that.
My son has his appointments scheduled already, and my daughter was in the Pfizer trial, so we just need to have her unblinding appointment. We will be all set for our upcoming cruise in February.

I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m at 20 days til our cruise, so I’m going to start taking extra precautions now.
Unfortunately, my partner has grand jury duty all the way up to our cruise, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed the doesn’t pick anything up there.

We were just about to hit the "10 days until we leave" mark for our cruise.  Darling wife and I started feeling a cold coming on.  Fall allergies right?  Unfortunately no.  We got a call from our sister-in-law that 6 members of our extended family that were all at our nephew's wedding that last weekend tested positive for Covid-19.  Hind sight now says that we should have protected ourselves better, but we were host couple for the reception which means interacting with a lot of people.  My darling wife is getting hit a lot worse then me and still has a sore throat and coughing.  Official tests show both of us positive also, so no way we are going to manage a negative test 2 days before sail.  So now working with TA to get our cruise cancelled again...ugh.  And yes this is a breakthrough case as we were vaccinated back in March/April.  Going to have to step away from blogs and Youtubers that we religiously monitored for last 2 months...just too painful.  So those on the Freedom this coming Monday have an extra drink for the two of us.
