Odyssey Of The Seas - Chris Wong

Recommended Posts

Thanks Chris! Great video as always!

A couple minor points.

Having been on 3 cruises this year, each port has slightly different rules.  Back in June, Barbados only allowed ship based excursions.  It went so far as the beach break portion of my excursion was replaced with a catamaran sailing just to keep us isolated.

Other ports have allowed vaccinated individuals to roam freely.  Most, like Curacao and Roatan required masks indoors, but not outdoors.  Others, like Cozumel and Costa Maya required them pretty much everywhere.

YMMV. These rules change daily.  Sometimes hourly!

To me, the biggest takeaways are as follows:

  • The protocols, both on board and in port, are constantly changing.  If you go, be prepared for changes and roll with the punches.
  • Plan on being vaccinated, tested, measured, poked and prodded many times.
  • The biggest challenge pre-cruise is meeting the test requirements.  For adults, a rapid antigen test is adequate.  Since Royal has now approved an at home test, it isn't too hard to meet for the time being.
  • Cruising is still awesome!  It is especially awesome when the ships are so empty.  Every sea day is like a port day where you remained on board.  No lines for shows, meals, slides, flowrider, elevators, etc. Every port day, is like a ghost town. Terrible for Royal's bottom line, but an incredible experience for cruisers.

Chris, great video. Also watched your latest video where you got to visit CoCo Cay. Congratulations on getting off and visiting the island. Also wanted to give a shout out to Mehi. Please tell him the Hall's from Liberty (the butterfly lady) say hi and hope to see him on a future cruise.

Loved the video Chris. Can’t wait to get back to coco. What royal has done there is simply mind blowing. You definitely do excellent PR for royal. See ya in December on odyssey.

Thank you! Yes, I never get bored of the island, and I'm there every week. See you soon!

Hi! Just got off Odyssey yesterday. I saw you once or twice a but you were super busy so I was scared to interrupt.

But I wanted to thank you for directions to the cat! Found it on my first day and it was a great boarding day photo.

Shame we never got to say hello. I hope you had a good cruise. Haha, you're welcome.

So in talking to the crew on odyssey I heard over and over again that their contracts would be ending at the end of the year and the extensions may not be possible as RCI tries to rotate more crew in.

Is it normal to have so many contracts end at the same time or was this a side-effect of covid and the restart process?

I wouldn't think they would want to "start from scratch" with an entire new crew.  That sounds like a recipe for lots of problems....

There are international conventions that limit the time any seafarer can stay on a ship.  Extensions have to respect these limits even if a crew member is willing to stay longer than legally permissible.

No, this is not normal.

Because the majority of crew joined the ship at the same time for the restart, a lot of the crew have similar sign-off dates. The process of changing crew member's sign-off dates has already started.

Some of us maybe required to extend, some even shorten our contract.

My contract has been extended for a couple of weeks.
