Fuzzywuzzy
The ship with the second worst failing grade was the Carnival Fantasy. And who is shocked or surprised?? FManke
I'm not sure about the specific criteria of these health inspections, I'm sure they are very thorough, as they should be for the health safety of everyone on board. However, you would not believe how easy it is to fail a health inspection. I'm in the food service industry and from the health inspections I've been involved with, something like an employee not using a paper towel to turn off the water faucet after washing their hands counts as a critical violation. Improper hand washing. Same as if they were observed not washing their hands. And the same as if a food product was not held in a proper temperature range. Not a criticism, just an observation. More to prove the point that if a cruise ship received a perfect score, they are certainly doing something right. This does not mean that a Noro virus or similar outbreak can't happen on even a "perfect" ship. As we all know most viruses are brought on board by guests. WASH THOSE HANDS! EARLY AND OFTEN! twangster
The government website includes very specific details about each and every finding plus the remediation plan. It’s very telling to review the findings. Some cruise lines have a sign missing or not within X feet of where it needs to be. Other cruise lines are busted for failing to report a health related issue that requires reporting. The devil is in the details. It’s also easy to pass these inspections. It’s requires work and training but that is in the public’s best interest. When companies habitually fail it’s very telling - they aren’t trying, it’s not important to them. Profit on the hand, is. Yes the WJ has the sinks and will nail you with purell too. BUT, check it out when you go into the dining rooms, or the casino, or the theaters. There are Purell stands right there, but rarely does anybody use them. Imagine the germs there! The worse thing is I can't tell you how many times I saw women in the ladies bathroom, go to the bathroom, than to sink, check their make up and clothes and walk right out the door without washing their hands. No wonder they have signs on every bathroom door saying use a paper towel when opening the door! All that went through my mind was if Norovirus occurred on our cruise these same passengers would be the ones screaming bloody murder and demanding money back. I hate to say my BIL and SIL were one of these non-washy washy people. I let it slip on the 1st night. By the next night as we were entering the dining room I made sure I went in 1st and said Washy Washy at the Purell station....basically guilted them into it. Same as we entered the theater. We did the galley tour and so this info did not strike me as odd. They had stated that the CDC requires an 86 (I think) to pass. However RCL requires their ships to score no lower than 94. I kind of laughed as they were telling us this since it is right before we toured the galley and they let people do the tour in flip flops and long hair down. Not saying long hair needed to be in nets, but they should have told them/given them a pony tail holder to tie it back, and the people in flip flops should have been told no, for health and safety you can't. I get they don't want to offend customers, but that to me was pure logic. cruisestuff

If scoring is similar to what I'm used to, even getting a score of 86, although passing, is still a concern. A lot of bad sanitation can still happen and receive a passing score. Everybody can have a bad day, but is it a one off or is it systemic? A lot of cities and towns now require places that are subject to Health Dept reports post the most recent one in a conspicuous place where they are visible to the public. That's basically what has happened here with the publishing of the reports from the CDC. Transparency is good especially when it comes to the health of the public. I feel like you just have to do the best you can for yourself. My wife and I are always very diligent to use the hand sanitizer stations every time we pass them. That's all we can do to protect ourselves. As far as people not washing their hands after using the bathroom? I don't know. What can you say? It reminds me of something one of my teaching chefs told us in school. He was from Czechoslovakia and he said one of the differences between Europeans and Americans was "In American, you teach your kids to wash their hands after they use the restroom. In Europe we teach our kids not to pee on their hands." I don't know how true that is, but I always found it amusing and often think about it when I see those actions or lack there of in restrooms. Pima1988
@FManke That is why they stated on this tour that Royal has a min of almost 10 points higher for every ship. They said not one of their ships has not made the RCL number. They were asked what happens if this occurs. They stated every crew member on port days and off shifts go through re-training, which includes on the ship, but also on line tests. Any crew member that does not pass is knocked down a level. IE the kitchen they wear yellow,, red and blue scarves. The yellow cannot be left alone for 90 days.

Side note: I have recently found (in the last several years) that I am allergic to the cheap hand soap used in many public restrooms. I carry individually packaged sanitary hand wipes with me in my bag at all times and when I use a public restroom, I will then use a wipe to clean my hands (once I have stepped out of the stall) then use that same wipe to open the door to leave and I will toss it in the nearest waste bin after exiting. Not arguing that this is the case for everyone. Just mentioning it because there is a cringe I feel when I don't properly step to the sink and wash like others but the allergic reaction from repeated exposure to cheap hand soap would end up with my hands red, itchy, and in some cases, bleeding. These days with perfumes and chemicals in everything it's a bit frustrating. Plus with many places trying to cut costs by using the most inexpensive things for places like the restroom. Oh well. It is what it is. The nice thing about carrying the little hand wipes is that I can use them constantly in airports (I hold the escalator hand rail with them!) and just anywhere. It was nice to hear there were so many Purell stations on ships. I also bought a small travel size Lysol spray to "bless" my cabin with when I arrive as I do this with my hotel rooms also. Good to see that the crew is concentrating on the really important aspects. But maybe I'm in the minority; some rust stains and railing finish don't really impact my overall experience. Fuzzywuzzy
The Majesty would have fared better had they not found those 2 fruit flies in the potato room. They also got beat up pretty good for the condition of the break room used by the engine room crew members. It looks like pass or fail can sometimes be hit or miss, industry wide. Usually ebay is the cheapest because a lot of the vendors have free shipping, but it's also available on Amazon, Staples.com., officedepot.com etc. What I do now is buy the 16.9 ounce pump bottle and use that to refill the original 2 oz bottles so my wife and children each have their own. Just search for Clorox CLO 02174 Bleach-Free Hand Sanitizer. JennyJenny
FloridaCruiseGirl1210
Interesting to see that RCL did have one ship that didn't pass... quite a few issues with Potable water tank which concerns me... I'm not interested in sailing on that exact ship so doesn't bother me as much but yikes Skid
