My wife had dinner with a friend this week. She and her family are so petrified that she has been off her property exactly twice in the last 12 months (both times to have dinner with my wife). Both parents are working from home. Their 7 year old is being home schooled. All groceries are delivered. The husband has left home a few times when it was absolutely necessary. Upon return he removes is clothing in the garage, the clothing is put into a trash bag for two weeks before it comes into the house to be laundered, and he sprays down with disinfectant before coming into the house. Of course all deliveries are handled appropriately too.
What country is this?
not the kind of thing that is happening in the Midwest. Maybe someone rare but the vast majority of people are going about there business and just masking up. All out stores set up 20-30 parking paces for pick-up but I hardly ever see anyone in them when either driving by or when going to shop.

We have had over a dozen family members vaccinated, no one ever asked for an insurance card.
Funny where I'm from you need to provide a copy of your insurance card if you have insurance.
No charge for the vaccine itself, just billing for administration of the shot, The latest stimulus package raised the reimbursement amount from medicare for administering the shot to around $50 I think

I used to always take it off the ship, then I stopped for a bit. I too had a fear of losing it or it being stolen.
I bought a neat passport wallet that holds passport, credit cards & cash so now I'm back to always taking it off the ship.
It's not required to reboard the ship, but walking around a country without your countries passport doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
I bring photocopies for record of passport information. My driver's license is enhanced so that helps closed loops (if passport was stolen) and I'm finally embracing a password manager (1password) and will start storing copies of these sensitive documents there.
@sk8erguy1978 what "neat passport wallet that holds passport, credit cards & cash" are you using. Always interested in what works for others

Thanks all. I'll plan on staying overnight and taking the 11 am nonstop the next day...that is, IF I actually go at all.
@Craig 01020 we are on that same Explorer of the Seas sailing as the first of a b2b.
FYI we have sailed out of San Juan this same time period for at least the last 5 years and making a 11am flight would have easily worked every time. But we also self debark taking our own bags and are in that line fairly early. I have tried taking my time but they do throw you out of your cabin fairly early.
Do remember to run your bags through the agricultural screening as soon as you get to the airport again i have never seen it really that busy, but we depart the ship early so that may influence it.

If you are in a port off the ship the passport doesn't do any good locked in the safe in your cabin. Take your passport with you when go on an excursion or even just shopping. Too many things can happen that keep you from going back to the ship to get it. You have spent the extra money for the security of a passport so keep it with you.
I believe the policy of RCG is that if you do not make it back to the ship for port departure, that security will enter your cabin unlock the safe and hand off your passports to the Port Agent. Maybe someone like @Matt @twangster or @WAAAYTOOO know for sure.
I used to take my passport with every time I left the ship on the first couple of cruises, but then reconsidered form the security aspect of it was far more likely it could be stolen or damaged and prevent me from a smooth disembarkation at the end of the cruise. I now leave it in the safe.

I also have stayed in quite a few hump cabins on Voyager Class Ships (Adventure is one of them). As stated the only noise i eve heard was your typical hallway noise that you can hear in any cabin that might have hallway traffic.
Although not that much bigger of a balcony it is larger and for that very reason it is one of our first choices if available.

In reference to requiring employees to be vaccinated.
What most of us forget is that in the US ~80% of employees are "At Will"
In U.S. labor law, at-will employment is an employer's ability to dismiss an employee for any reason (that is, without having to establish "just cause" for termination), and without warning, as long as the reason is not illegal (e.g. firing because of the employee's race, religion or sexuality).
Maybe ya just can't tell them that's why they are fired, they still are fired

sad, just sadOnly if he actually can admit it was his fault
if not, then no feelings of guilt

I don't think the CDC is targeting the cruise industry. Don't get me wrong, I don't like what they are doing. Look at the airlines pushing back now that they are in the CDC crosshairs.
The problem I have with the powers granted to the CDC is the lack of a check of that power. That opens the door for this agency to run away out of control with an unclear branch to reign them in. That's what I think is occuring with the CDC. They've gotten away with with cruise lines, they may have bitten off more than they can chew with domestic airlines concepts they are suggesting. If they do get their way with the airlines, the cruise lines face a very uncertain future.
good points. I also think the domestic airlines have more political clout than the cruise lines. Note i have heard the airlines are complaining big time about the international covid test requirement and pointing out already their loss of revenue and need for more bailout.

@RickinSTL thanks, I just live upriver from you where it truly flows from East to West, in the summer the sun both rises and sets on the river. Not as dramatic a view as being at sea but a beautiful sight non the less

I also have one of these cards. (I'm sure millions of American's also have one of these cards).
I will also attach this card to my passport.
not really that different from the UK's handwritten card, and yes for travel purposes easily faked
My first shot card is the same as the one posted, but in Iowa the public health dept maintains a master database and you will not get a shot in Iowa unless your in it, card or no card.

Look at Barbados, they already had some infrastructure as a departure port and had some cruise lines that departed from there. Their airport structure was a little more robust mainly do to the travel there from the United Kingdom. They are just barely getting started and with only one small ship.
I still think Vaccine is the answer. The US is only 60 days into vaccination and 10% of the population has received at least the first dose, with another vaccine ready to be rolled out, I would suppose that everyone who wants the vaccine will have it no later than the end of this year. Then the question is what will the CDC do??

I feel for you and understand. We had a Xmas 2020 cruise booked for 7 family members in 3 cabins. Booked it as soon as the itinerary was out (2 years in future).
For planning purposes I monitored Xmas 2019 flight costs every week from 6 months out and logger it in spread sheet.
Jan 2020 was 11 months out and Xmas 2020 flight were released, while not the lowest in my spread sheet prices were close to bottom, so i spent $6k on plane tickets. We all know what happened end of Feb 2020. I sat on everything until just before final payment for cruise was due, then I L&S the cruise to Xmas 2021. But I still had $6000. in AA plane tickets, waited and waited debating weather to cancel and take a credit voucher (would have been 7 voucher in each individuals name and some now won't be going in 2021). Well at 2 weeks out just as I logged in contemplating canceling, I noticed the departure had changed by 1 hr 45 minutes. Research said that AA had changed the rule to had to be 4 hour difference in middle of summer for refund, but that prior to that time it had been 1 hour.
Lucky me I received a full refund to the payment of record. New lesson learned "Buy airfare much closer to cruise departure"

I'm not a beach person either, but i would not miss a chance to get off the ship at Labadee. Even without a cabana or the special suite beach there is quite a bit to see and do there, that is if you don't mind walking around. Avoid the craft area like the plague though.
As for the Labbadoozie
make sure you get one early, because the will run out.

We use the Royal Caribbean Visa card and we love it. I know that there are other cards that have a better payback, but b/c we use it exclusively for RC purchases and b/c the credit goes directly to your Sea Pass account, we use it a lot. I pay for all of my cruises and all cruise planner purchases with the card as well as use it for all onboard purchases (casino, primarily). It works well for us. Any Royal Caribbean purchase earns double points.
The interest rate is awful so as long as you do not carry a balance, you're fine. There is no annual fee.
everything Waaaytooo said are the advantages if you use the card, I still use mine for RC cruise purchases.
For me the kicker to get it was the bonus points offered at application with a spend in 1st 3 months (I timed the application and used it to pay off a couple of cruises) fetched something like $100 or $150 on board sign&sail credit.
Also remember that if not used in something like 2-3 years (they have a chart on the web site) your points exprire. They don't last forever.

We cruise every other year over Christmas, the odd year when our grandson does not visit. Our first one was when our children were around 15 years old and it was I can buy you the normal junk or I can take you on this nice vacation on a cruise ship. They voted and the cruise won. They loved it. It is probably the most expensive week to cruise, certainly one of them, but then so is every other vacation spot. Can't wait to take the grand children!

Two good reasons.
1. No bank wants to repossess cruise ships. It's not something they are going to get value out of.
2. More importantly, cruise industry is a proven money maker. In the long run, they are good for it. Banks and investment firms are looking at big picture, years in advance. Day traders and cruise nerds are consumed with what's happening today, but investors invest in companies that they think over long haul (years) will return the investment.
yes and add the factor of "to big to fail" we have seen it happen before, an industry bailed out by either a government or big financial institutions. It seems to be that if too many big business would collapse, the whole financial market would collapse similar to a domino effect. It not just popular themes in SciFi, but could be a real possibility.

Both links seem to portray a positive outlook for the future, at least for cruising that may stay in domestic waters. Of course the question of crew is still a concern. Question: Does Australia have a ban on cruises to "Nowhere" like we have here in the US? From my perspective I would not even mind that type of cruise, just to get away from it all for a week, just not possible in the US

Due to the Cold weather here in Scotland i have always held a grudge against the judge who let my Great Great Great Great Great grandfather off with a suspended sentence
yes and the practice ended in 1868, in the US even when i was young judges often told young offender that if they enlisted they would dismiss their case, another practice unheard of

Maybe they should not be in charge of the Cruise industry either! They can't shut down air travel, even when going to resorts in other countries, same level of risk. They can't shut down Disney world, same level of risk. They can't shut down Professional sports, same level of risk.
