CFL reacted to WAAAYTOOO in Insurance - what "cost" and time frame to use?
Not sure about the rates, but some riders, specifically, Cancel for Any Reason, can only be added if the policy is activated within a certain number of days of booking.   I think that length of time varies but is generally around the 14 day mark, I think.  So if you specifically want Cancel for Any Reason (which really ISN'T ANY reason) then you have to purchase it pretty quickly after booking.

As soon as you know, you notify your insurance company and you can extend your coverage date.  We had to do this with a hurricane-delayed cruise (adjusted the start date to be later once we booked new flights).  You are purchasing coverage for the trip and you get coverage from the second you leave your house until when you return home.  If this is extended for whatever reasons (quarantine, needing medical coverage away from home and being hospitalized, travel delays, etc.) then your coverage gets extended.
    Example of policy language:

CFL reacted to Jim S in Jewel of the Seas stuck in Dubai today March 11th
Received an email early this morning from our Canadian friends who are currently on the Jewel of the Seas. The ship sailed yesterday from Dubai heading for Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas Island but both ports were closed and the ship returned to Dubai overnight. We were due to join our friends on Monday for two B2B cruises on 16th and 23rd March but it is looking like both of these cruises could be cancelled.
Two passengers onboard are also ill and waiting to be tested for COVID-19 by the Dubai Port Authorities before a decision will be made on future sailings.
We have heard nothing from RCCL so far but will post updates on the forum as and when we receive any more information.

I just purchased insurance for my next cruise yesterday.. now my trip isn't until 2022, all I did was pay for the cruise part now.. and I just need to call back and add on the flight/ hotel, extras.. the insurance agent just told me to call back and you can add to your insurance plan anytime..

Totally agree with what @JLMoran stated.
Use the day you leave your house as the trip start date and the day you expect to return home as your end date.  This will cover the entire length of your trip and allow for coverage if something happens that requires an extension.  If you only put the end date as the end of the cruise then your flight home isn't covered.
As for trip costs, include the costs of everything.  A couple hundred dollars in total trip cost won't amount to much when it comes to the insurance premium.  This amount is what substantiates your policy limits for coverage and some of the coverages will only pay up to that limit.  Consider there may be extra costs if you get stick somewhere and have to pay to extend your stay or travel home on a different, last minute flight for any reason.  Including the hotel and travel expense to/from the cruise will help give you the higher claim limit.
Also remember this is only an ESTIMATE that you provide to the insurance company.  When I had to file a claim, my first step was substantiating our coverage amount with actual receipts and proof of payment for the entire trip.  Then from there I had to provide the proof of the loss to actually make the claim.

When I purchase my trip insurance I put in the cost of the cruise, and then when I purchase the remainder (flight/hotel/excursions), I contact the insurance company and add those on.  I could just use the cost of the deposit and add the rest when I pay the remainder of the cruise as well.  The reason I don't do this is that in order to qualify for Cancel for Any Reason I must use the full cost of the cruise, and I have to purchase it within 14-15 days (depending on the policy).   If I miss the 14-15 day window I lose the CFAR coverage, so at that point I just wait (since I book refundable deposits anyway).

Hi @Fred567, welcome to the RCBlog forums!
Part of the consideration nowadays is when your trip is happening. I'm assuming you just booked and it's some time next year, but even so you need to consider the risk that Cover-19 is going to flare up again at that time and start causing havoc all over again.
You can, given what you described, just put the cruise portion of your trip duration as the "trip cost" -- this would include the cruise fare, flight in, excursions you bought either through the cruise line or directly through a third party, and all on-board packages like drinks / dining / internet. The true full cost of your cruise vacation. As long as the cruise doesn't leave you stuck somewhere or having to fly home on an emergency, you're good.
But what if the ship gets put into quarantine? Even if Covid-19 doesn't come back in a bad way, what if you end up injured and unable to call the car rental place and the hotel to cancel the reservation and avoid no-show charges? What if there is a storm that ends up canceling your flight home and you have to pay a change fee, or stay a few extra unplanned nights? What if you end up hospitalized on the next-to-last day in Orlando? What if your luggage gets permanently lost on the return flight and you have to now go and buy a partial new wardrobe?
Even though the odds are really good that the last 3 days of your trip will come and go without a hitch, it's still a good idea to include those costs and time as part of the policy; maybe just the penalty charges for failing to cancel in time, but put something down for that as part of the total, along with the cost of your flight home. And put the day you fly home as the actual last day of your trip. The policy will not cost that much more to add a few extra days and $500-$700 additional, and you'll have the peace of mind knowing that you've got coverage for anything it covers for the whole trip.

    Planning a cruise
Canadians planning cruise ship travel should be aware that infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, can spread quickly due to close contact between passengers. Older people and people with a weakened immune system or underlying medical condition are at a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19.
As the situation evolves, many countries are implementing policies and restrictions in order to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. These restrictions may impact a cruise traveller's:
itinerary ability to disembark access to health care It could also result in travellers being subject to quarantine procedures.
Passengers who plan to travel by cruise ship should contact their cruise line to check if their travel plans will be impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. You may also wish to visit the Cruise Lines International Association for information regarding how they are responding to the situation. https://cruising.org/news-and-research/press-room/2020/march/clia-covid-19-toolkit
Reduce the risk of infection by following prevention measures when travelling. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/prevention-risks.html#re
Refer to the advice for cruise travellers for more information on how to plan for a safe cruise.  https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/publications/advice-for-cruise-travellers
    Outbreak situation
Should an outbreak of COVID-19 occur on your cruise ship, you may not be offered the opportunity to return to Canada on a government-organized flight, as occurred with the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship in February 2020. If that is the case, when you return to Canada on a commercial flight, you will be required to remain in mandatory isolation for 14 days at a location determined by the Chief Public Health Officer.
The decision on Minimizing the Risk of Exposure to COVID-19 Coronavirus Disease in Canada Order (Persons Not on Government Flight) is effective from February 19 to April 30, 2020.

We did the White Pass Railway the first time we were in Skagway.  I think everyone should do it once.  Unfortunately, the day we went it was raining (which is does quite a bit up there) and our views were diminished.  It would be nice to know what the weather will be like before taking that trip.  Sorry, we did not do the suspension bridge.  Good luck with your decision.  I am sure you will love Skagway no matter what you do there...

Also found out this morning that my wife had insurance on the flights from Washington Reagan National to Miami, so although we lose $200, the rest is on a credit from Expedia so we can use it to fly to Orlando in December and should have no issue using the remainder of the credit for the flights. All well that ends well in these poor circumstances.

CFL reacted to VACruiser in Oasis Denied and MEI Awesomeness
I know catchy title but the worst happened this week. I have a cruise for this Sunday, 8 March 2020 on Oasis of the Seas. We booked this cruise a year and half ago and was really looking forward to it. I woke up Tuesday morning with the room spinning out of control and feeling very nauseous. I knew that feeling, it was the flu. Knowing I couldn’t just ride it out I had to go to the doctors and get a note indicating my status to inform RCI.  Under the rules I had to be 14 days well to sail and I was well within that window.
So off I went to the walk-in clinic where they jabbed a cotton swab so far up my nose I thought they were hitting brain. Nurse puts it in a container and says I will be back in 10 minutes to let you know the results. PA walks in next and says what I already suspected- Influenza Type A....UGH! There goes the trip. At this point I send an email to @michelle at MEI to let her know what was going on.
Michelle let us know our options - Go to insurance (always get insurance people) and get the money back or she would TRY and rebook us but no promises. She had me choose 3 cruises by priority and she would give them a call. This morning I woke up to a new cruise in December 2020 and all the previous items for the Oasis cruise will be refunded and the cruise money itself will transfer over to new cruise. I just have to replan the cruise for what we want to do. I love doing that already so I’ll have fun doing a new cruise planner.
I found about MEI from this blog, as I have never had an agent before, and this is a classic case of why they are so important. I have learned so much from this site so thanks to @Matt for starting this blog forum.
Plug for Michelle - she did an awesome job in a very short amount of time and I am so thankful for her help. If you ever thought of an agent but said no, I could do it myself, think again...I would still be on the phone with the flu trying to fix this mess. Instead I was home in bed taking Tamiflu and getting rid of this flu without having to rebook or fight the insurance for a refund!
Thanks again and maybe this thread can help someone else in the future if the worst happens to you pre-cruise week.

Oh BTW - someone should be getting a Royal-up for Junior Suite 12636 soon since I had to cancel. And, I did have a flu shot this year so It didn’t work so well.

The title of your post look as though you may think that this is an official RCCL website and asking for these options to be added. It is not. This is a fan site not at all affiliated with Royal Caribbean.
Your comments are a bit puzzling. Each ship we've been on in the past four years has had almond and/or soy milk options and oil based dressings are a staple. As mentioned above, there's no need to suffer in silence if you have food allergies or issues. The staff is always ready and willing to accommodate. My wife is gluten intolerant and she is always appreciative of how little she has to worry about food issues.

To summarize, apart from the high fever he said this is not even close to the worst he’s ever been sick. It’s been a lot of Gatorade and some Advil when the fever went back over 100, and lots of poking and prodding while he’s been taking voluntary part in efforts to find a treatment for the virus. But at no time did he feel like he was at death’s door or even in particular danger.

By learning from these great people I just snagged a great deal!!!
I already did final payment on our May 2020 Western Med cruise but still was checking prices and saw they had dropped.
So I called, all RC could say is no.
I got the best RC C & A rep, his name is Kenu.
I went from a family interior to a GYT Suite (Some people here are a bad influence and YOLO)
Yes, I paid the difference but since I listen to the wonderful people on this blog ( see above) I booked as soon as it opened so it was at a great price to start with.
The price difference was $700 per stateroom (I know, it was a crazy good price, to me at least)
So now we can try out a suite and see if it's worth they extra cost.
Of course my husband is worried, he thinks once I try a suite I will never want to go back to a OV balcony (our typical room)
Plus again taking the advice from here, I got two staterooms for us four (why we were in two family interior staterooms instead of a OV balcony)
So our daughter and her boyfriend are also in a GYT Suite.
I just had to share, I'm super excited.  I can't wait to see where we land in terms of suites ( totally fine with a JR suite)
Plus we get double C & A points!!

Twice, now, @monctonguy has referenced/quoted me, so I feel the need to say SOMETHING. I stand by everything I have said. Im not worried about this virus. Im going to go on about my life as I always have.... I control what I can, and worry about nothing I cant control. Hell, I barely worry about things I CAN control. Worrying doesnt solve problems...it creates them.
Saying people should be more concerned about things they are more likely to die from isnt trivializing corona virus.  I 100% believe people should be MORE concerned with other aspects of their health and everyday life than corona virus. Until the likelihood, the numbers of deaths, illnesses and avoidable accidents from the things society is blatantly "flippant" about come close to comparing....that belief wont change.
Would my level of concern be different if the epicenter was in the US? Well hell yes it would, just like i care more about a bowling ball over my head than one on the ground....but my opinion and ideas about this are based in fact, not hypothetical, and definitely not in speculation.
....with that, Im done talking about it. Bowing out.....Happy cruising.
