Apparently the new administration is focusing on foreign owned and flagged ships.

Theres talk on excess port charges on foreign ships visiting U.S ports. It’s rumoured they are mainly looking at Chinese container ships but cruise ships are involved.

One of the figures getting around in $1 million and as high as 1.5 million will be placed on cosco container ships visiting U.S. ports.

Has anyone heard anything about cruise ships?

Sydney might start looking like an attractive proposition to send a few extra ships to. 😃

I'd be shocked if cruise ships are ever affected.  I'd also be shocked if that kind of tariff was placed on a cargo ship since that's basically how much revenue a ship makes per trip anyway.

There seems to be a lot of shocking things happening lately.

I didn’t realise ships had to be built in the U.S to have the flag.

Yep. That's why it took so long to finally Dispose of the SS United States. There were several cruise lines interested in recommissioning her as the last of the US built ocean liners afloat. I guess none of them really worked out.

@Matt provides a nice overview of the 1886 Passenger Vessel Services Act.  I agree with the comments from the administration that this should be repealed and U.S. companies should be able to re-enter ship building activities if they are interested in the investment.  It certainly seems like ship building locations like Finland are not places with low cost labor.  The 1886 legislation needs to go.  The Norwegian bucket of bolts “Pride of America” is the only U.S. flagged ocean cruise ship that doesn’t need to visit a foreign port and that is deeply regretful.

Reading about all the Alaska cruise discussions in the news today:  potential bills to avoid Canadian ports, and Canada adding tolls to American trucks and all trying to access Alaska. Potentially Canada could even deny land access to Alaska.

For all those who drink alcohol, I also see 200% increased tariffs threatened on European alcohol!

Yes, cruising will be affected by trade wars.

I think it's great news. I'm sure a lot of people enjoy stopping in Canada but I would love extra time in Alaska instead. I think this is totally positive for cruising as the cruise lines would have a choice and so would cruisers. You could chose a cruise that stops in Canada or go straight to Alaska.

But they are not really American ships so the shouldn’t attract Canada’s Levies.

I don't think this is good news, but some good may come from it. Perhaps this will finally trigger the end of the PVSA. Can anyone say "Hawaii cruises?"
