DBP and the good stuff

Just returned from a cruise last week and our first with the DBP.  One thing I noticed was how rare it was to see the name brand alcohol being used for drinks.  While I know that those are included in the package, my knowledge of liquor is not very high.  Outside of ordering a Lava Flow with Kracken Rum based on Matt's recommendations or a Bombay Sapphire Gin and Tonic, I'm a bit lost.

So, what are some of the standard requests when asking for a drink without rail liquor?  Do you simply say you want top shelf liquor? Call out certain brands based on the generic liquor types in the menu?

Yes, I ask for a Grey Goose Cosmopolitan, a Patron Margarita, a Bulleit Sidecar, and never have any problem as long as they're not taking a bunch of orders at once (like in the theater, I know that that margarita came back with well tequila). I also find that, after a good tip, the other ingredients become premium also, such as Grand Marnier instead of shelf triple sec (although you could just ask for that too).

For the price of the booze package, they better not give me any problems if I ask for the right booze

Most people don't ask for name brand alcohol because they also don't know what to ask for or because they can't tell the difference.  (And after the first drink or two, even those that can tell may lose that ability!)  Personally, I don't find much difference for drinks that use a lot of mixers/non-alcohol ingredients.  But if I'm sipping straight bourbon on the rocks, then I would care about the quality but would need some help picking.  That's where getting to know the bartenders comes into play.  Ask for recommendations and say thank you with a cash tip, and they'll make sure you're happy.

For me it's a frozen drink or Gentlemen Jack, neat or with Coke. Your best bet is to go to the bar that is the smallest or in the quietest area and look at the selection. That way you can ask for drinks by name. My brother drinks quality whiskey/bourbon/scotch. So, when I do my walk through of the casino while it is closed and I first board, I look at the selection. Then I just ask for that at any other bar. Gentlemen Jack was the best on my Oasis sailing, with Bulleit on my Grandeur sailing.

Bumping this thread as we are 3 weeks from the next trip.

What are some cocktails, even ones on the menu, that you ask for with a top shelf liquor, and which one?

Thanks

Some bartenders know it as a Royal margarita. Patron Tequila, Cointreau, sweet and sour or lime and orange juice with a floater of Grand Mariner.
