Security on the ship

Recommended Posts

If I stated this b4 I am sorry.

Security on the Adventure was amazing.

1. Towel station.  A passenger saved 8 chairs at 7 a.m.  By 9:30 a.m. their towels were returned, but their items were left by the chairs.  The attendant said you broke the rule that is stated everywhere...30 mins.  You now owe 200 bucks for the 8 towels because you didn't check them back in.  They got testy, security was called and they were told that if they did not back down they would be escorted off tomorrow at 8 a.m. when we docked.  They immediately backed down

2. My SIL looked very flush when she was walking on the pool deck.  A security officer said to her sit down now.  He went to the pool bar got her a bottle of water and watched her drink it.  She was over heated.  She wanted to leave them, and they said no, not unless she walked back to someone that was traveling with her.  I was in the Solarium.  They brought her back, and I said, no, I know her, she is very fair skin and what you think is flushed it really is sunburn starting to show.  They stayed another 10 mins to watch over her.

3. At night 3 I went up to the blue moon bar, deck 14.  I get on and find 3 kids, ages 8,10 and 12.  The 10 yr old that day had to get 5 stitches at Horseshoe bay (grotto area) her shin is wrapped.  I make small talk and ask how old are they.  They told me.  They were going to deck 5 Promenade, my cabin was on 7, but decided to go to 4 to Schooners.  I told the bartender that there are 3 kids under 12 riding the elevator....I knew this also because they said that as soon as they hit 5 they were going to hit 11 (pool)  2-3 mins later security was at Schooners asking for descriptions of the kids.  These are the balcony style elevators so you can see everyone.  I ordered a bottle of water, went to the elevator and as mine was going up the security guard was coming down with the 3 kids.

~ I don't know if this was because of Freedom, but I remember thinking what kind of parent are you?  Who lets an 8 yr old that just got stitches to wander a ship this size?  The promenade staircase is marble.  The pool deck even at that hr can still be slippery.  Those handrails for a 10 yr old truly are an issue if they want to get a close up look at the sea when you are talking about being with other young kids.

4. Night 4 we were walking the deck and 4 18+ yo boys decided that this was the running track.  They got nailed, and I watched security ask let me see your sea pass card.  He said something on the walkie talkie.  Next thing I knew was they were being escorted off the deck...my guess back to their parents cabin.

I was really impressed with security, even though they made me go through the screener 3 times each time.  I have a metal knee cap and a hip.  I would tell them this before I entered.  I'd beep, they send me back in again.  It always ended the same way.  Do you have a phone on you? NO.  Do you have any jewelry on you? Yes, just my wedding and engagement ring.  3rd time...do you have any metal in your body?  You mean my right knee and hip?  Yes.  Okay...go through

They know when you are bad or good so be good for goodness sake.  Like Ninja`s they are everywhere.  And they will put you off the ship. It does happen but you hardly ever hear about. Who would ever admit to that happening?  Having 4 metal parts my self I just go thru the motions with the various security agencies.   Friends of ours were recently on a cruise and this guy didn`t show up to muster. He was in his cabin drunk and belligerent.  He was escorted off the ship.

I like to hear they are doing their job.

I also have metal parts so I just assume I'll get dinged every single time and allot extra time for it.

So far, every TSA agent I have had has been absolutely wonderful. Never dealt with cruise security to board the ship though (I honestly don't recall there being security the MANY years ago when I sailed one time). Is it TSA that handles it now or a private firm?

I take the train quite often and there is still no security for that (Amtrak).

At embarkation ports in Florida, it is a third party company called Intercruises that handle check-in details and may provide for the security in the terminal, although I am not certain of that. When stepping on board, ship security takes over, and they scan your Seapass each time you board or disembark and ask all the pertinent questions. Every time I observe them or interact with them, I am impressed. They deal with all kinds of crap from entitled passengers, and handle it really well.

As a former LEO, I can only imagine what they have to deal with.

Glad to hear they have security now to board.

I don't recall security to board (aside from in port)  the one time I cruised but that was prior to 9/11 when you could still go to the gate of a flight without having a ticket to see a friend off.

Times they are a changin'

The sooner this is implemented fleetwide, the better it will be for all of us. Nothing worse than a chair hog. I hope this isn't a one off for AoS. Rules like these should be enforced for the enjoyment of all. I'm all for getting up early and staking your claim to the best loungers in the pool area, but you better be using them and not just saving them for later.

What is the rule? I assume I can get a chair then swim some laps but how long do I have to swim the laps?

Can I leave a note on the chair with my stuff like, "Swimming laps, red swimsuit in the pool, let me know if you have a question"?

I often swim for 40-70 minutes depending on the training session. Should I just plan to break the 40 minutes into two 20 minutes and make sure I dash back to my chair and sit in it for a bit?

I am planning on the Solarium for my pool time so not sure if there are different rules depending on the pool.

I don't think we need to take it to that extreme, but we all know the difference between people who are using their loungers and those that are holding their loungers, in case they want to use them. It seems to me that security is also using information from surrounding guests as to whether or not a lounger is being used. It doesn't sound like they are going around marking loungers like meter maids marking tires in a timed parking spot.

? Good to know. I suppose it would behoove me to make friends with my fellow loungers so they know I am swimming laps in the event they are asked ?

Rule abiding people need to stick together. I'm not one of those people that are going to go out of my way to report rule breaking, unless of course it is dangerous or a public safety issue, but I will definitely give my honest feedback to those that ask.

@JennyJenny I am sorry I am lmao with this idea that you can swim 40-70 mins., let alone laps.

These pools are at best 20-30 feet long and 15 -20 feet wide.  There is no deep end, the deepest is less than 5 feet.

I swam laps everyday in the pool along with 1 other woman.  We were in the pool when they opened at 7.  Solarium pool opens at 8.

By 11 all of those pools were wall to wall people.  If you were in it for 40-70 mins you were yakking with other passengers.  There were times in the Solarium pool that it was so crowded the lifeguard had to whistle and tell people move away from the staircase.  The hot tubs were also packed.

If you truly want to swim laps and not at 7 a.m. than expect to do so at night.

Take a look at pool pics and you will see what I am talking about.  Don't know which ship you are sailing on, but on FB there is always a group for that particular ship.

I am with @FManke  there are signs everywhere that states 30 mins unattended and towels will be confiscated.  I love the pools, I stay in so long that my fingers become raisins, but still that would not be an hr. in one clip.

I can get the swim drills in with the small pools at most hotels but it's sounding like the Solarium is going to be packed? ?

Sounds like the lovely photos around the web of a blissfully empty quiet pool are LIES ??

And people wonder why I have trust issues * grumble grumble*

How late is the pool open at night? I am not opposed to getting my lap time in late (I often do so here at home).

I am on Grandeur but I don't have/do Facebook. The pics I have seen show a pretty much empty pool. And these are the ones allegedly from passengers.  I wonder if they were taken on embarkation day when the ship was still fairly empty and the pool hadn't filled yet ?

Hmmmmm may have to adjust my training plan for while I am gone. Is the gym super crowded? I could swap out and lift instead and run on the track. I can go a week without swimming if it's not really going to be a realistic option.

Wait a minute. All this and possibly working onboard ship? Aren't you supposed to be on vacation?

LOL oooops. ?

I tend to go 100 mph at all times. I have not taken an actual all by myself (not taking care of my parents or daughter) vacation in over 10 years and this is kind of a self imposed time out.

Working is only an "if there is an emergency" situation. I was away for "vacation" with my family during the 4th of July week and only had to address two emails. That's pretty good! I just don't went something to need my attention and be unable to address it. That's not responsible and I have responsibilities.

As to the training, I train for triathlons and I could take a week off and do nothing but I find that if I do that then I just don't feel good physically. I can certainly be chill and just do yoga and walk and some swimming & ballroom dancing (which was my plan) but if I simply engage lazy mode + eat too much of the rich sugary food + add alcohol (which I most likely won't aside from a glass of Champagne or wine with dinner) -> I will feel absolutely dreadful and sick after a few days. I've learned this lesson and no longer make those mistakes of over indulging or straying too far from training. Fitness has simply become a way of life for me and I don't really see it as "work" just part of me trying to be healthy like drinking water and sleeping etc. ☺️

If I do some activity each day, drink my water, stick to one, maybe two drinks (afternoon by the pool or with dinner or a show) and don't go nuts with the sugar I should be good. I plan to have one really indulgent dessert each night but am going to do my best to not eat a ton of junk food or down tons of sugary drinks. Just because I want to enjoy my vacation, not feel like I am going to barf!

@JennyJenny If you are on Lady G, I can tell you that Lady G's pool is small.  From the hotels I have stayed at, their pools have always been larger than the size of the small ships like Lady G

Lady G maxes out at what?  2400-2600 people?

The pools are empty early in the a.m., but like I said by 9:30 or 10 impo it would be rude for anyone to try to do laps in any of these pools.  It also depends on when and where you are sailing to regarding how packed the pool will be.

Lady G does the Caribbean/NE Canada sailings.  Go on the NE cruise in Sept and I am sure the pools will be empty.  Go to Caribbean in July and I am sure they are filled.

Again, I do not know which ship you are going on.  For example.  Anthem out of Bayonne has 3 pools.  I could see you doing laps in the middle pool since it is closed in like the solarium, but

more like a lap pool.  The Solarium on that ship is more of spa style design, with multiple hot tubs and a free form design.

My husband always goes to the gym everyday.  We choose to sail on different class ships.  Next yr will be Oasis.  We have found the only problem with the gym is like chair hogs.  There are signs of time limits on the treadmill, elliptical, but people tend to ignore them.

If you are training for a triathlon I would tell you that every a.m. @ 6:30  my husband and I would walk the track on the top deck.  It is filled with runners and walkers. There was no issue of too many people.  I would go to the pool and swim after and he would go to the gym.  Again, like I said before there was no problem if you want to do laps before 9 a.m.

We always do late seating for dinner.  By 5 pm the pool was always near empty and you can easily do laps, especially in the Solarium.  There were a few in the hot tub, but that was it. We typically left the pool @ 5:30-6:00. I just checked my cruise compass from last week, the Solarium was open until 8 and the main pool was open until 11.

I really don't get that, but again I am a Jersey girl.  Plus, I don't know where you are cruising to for that sailing.  Let's say you are going to Bermuda.  You have a higher chance of your wallet being stolen on Horseshoe Beach than on the cruise ship.

I don't take risks.  My jewelry, passport, extra cash stays in the safe...I unplug on a cruise.  My phone is also in the safe.  Heck, we only take 1 credit card and our debit card on our cruises.  The debit stays in the safe at all times, only the credit card is taken out for excursions.  Yet, as I have stated multiple times, I have no problem leaving my pool tote at the foot of my lounger with my sea pass, and kindle while I go an dip in the pool for 30 mins.

Here is a quick question for anyone that worries about theft on the ship.  Do you pack up everything except for your towel when you go to the bathroom or the pool bar?  If not why not?

@JennyJenny  I might have read your post wrong.  Are you on Lady G now, or is that the ship you will be on when  you sail?  If you will be on Lady G, I doubt you will have a crowded pool issue.  The service is impeccable on her, but she does not have the bells and whistles like the ships out of Bayonne, hence the median age will be higher.  Fewer kids (no slides, flow rider, etc)

I guess I am confused by the first part of the OP's comments.  If the towels were returned, why were they charged $200?   Believe me, I don't agree with chair hogs and I do understand the removal of items, but if the towels were picked up by the pool attendants, why would the passenger be billed?

If I did leave things and go off and hog the chair, I might have questions for the cruise line as to why I am being billed if they removed the towels.  Either I don't understand, which is possible as I don't use the pools, or something is wrong with this post.  Please explain it to me.  Thanks.
