I cannot even tell you what I tip each cruise. I tip what I feel is appropriate. Don't think I've ever tipped more than $50. We are, very low key people, we don't ask for much and keep a tidy room. I'll admit, seeing the big tips people leave for a Genie freaks me out, because we would barely use the person, even less of we are cruising with friends not in a suite.

...AAAAAAALL of this.  Kudos to those that tip big....I just dont. But its because I dont ask a lot. I try to make service peoples jobs as EASY as possible. Me and my fam are very low maintenance and feel wrong for asking things of others. I figure God gave me two arms, two legs, and half a brain, so I can do most things myself...I prepay gratuities and will tip above that if service goes above and beyond.

As a Buckeye living in Columbus, we have always wanted to do this cruise. The reason we don't, is that it has always been a 4 or 5 night cruise and considerably more expensive. Not to mention it sells out in no time flat, particularly the suites. There are a ton of Buckeyes fans with a lot of disposable income!

O-H! Yeah ...it's not cheap, but I keep thinking about hanging out in the Windjammer with Mike Doss, or doing shots with one of the Borens, and I keep thinking that'd be priceless. ? The list of Buckeyes on board is IMPRESSIVE. https://www.buckeyecruise.com/bucks-on-board/

As promised, here is the update.  I have changed my bids a couple of times and ended up with a minimum bid on the Star Loft suite and slightly above minimum bid on the Aqua Theater 2 bedroom and the Crown Loft suite.  I checked the status about an hour ago and found that both the Star Loft and the Aqua Theater had expired, and the Crown Loft was pending.  I was unable to modify the pending bid however.  I tried because I was curious.  They were in the process of upgrading me!!!  We are now in a Crown Loft suite.  I am very excited.  I was thrilled to be in a GS, and now I am extra excited.  For those wondering, the minimum bid was $300 pp and I bid $400 pp, which registered in the lowest part of the weak scale.  This is my third RC sailing and my second Sky Class.  This will be my husband's second RC sailing, and he has never been on an Oasis class ship or in a suite.  He knows we are in a GS, but not about the upgrade.  It will be a nice surprise.  We are in 1742.  Can anyone tell me anything about it?

How do you check the status of your bid? I have a bid in on my Rhapsody sailing in April.

I work in a hospital, and there are zero concerns. Obviously we have systems in place and are ready if it does become a concern, but for now it's a wait and see. In my opinion I have a better chance of getting it at work in my hospital the I do on my upcoming cruise ?

My wife is an RN, and we have two germy boys. Only so many preventative measures can be taken....lol.

Well, not to burst your bubble, but that story is from the end of January and since then the situation has changed considerably. Someone I spoke with used a metaphor regarding this comparison to the flu by the media that I thought was exceedingly poignant, so I'll repeat it here: "Comparing COVID to the flu is like saying that more people are killed every year in the US by cows rather than by sharks. Technically true, but irrelevant when I'm letting you know that a breed of shark is developing the ability to walk on land". Current estimates have the fatality rate of COVID optimistically near 1% (already taking into consideration things like number of infections in China is probably severely under-reported, etc as the raw numbers out of China suggest at least double that number if not 10x). If it is truly at 1%, that makes COVID 5x deadlier than the flu, and for me means saying goodbye to 3 of my coworkers if the infection gets a foot hold in my office building.

You also mentioned you'd take your chances on a ship with 170 confirmed infections (the Diamond Princess). The raw number is not scary... The fact that the number jumped from single digits to 170 in the span of a week is. The fact that a Japanese health worker who was presumably taking just about every precaution within reason caught the virus while coming on board to care for the passengers is. Unfortunately for the people on board, but fortunately for the rest of us, the Diamond Princess is a near perfect opportunity to study the spread of COVID and will give us a better idea of some of how this will behave. As someone who has two cruises scheduled later in the year, I'm thankful I'm not within the 90 day window right now. It's foolish to advise against cancellation as though everything is fine, just as it's foolish to postulate that this is the end of cruising as we know it in the short-term.

We'll know more soon, but if I lived with someone with complicating factors (very young kids, seniors, respiratory problems, or immunosupressed) I would absolutely be cancelling a cruise scheduled to depart within the next week or two.

Its growth rate on a cruise ship (which has grown by 1% since I wrote that) cannot be compared to the growth rate outside in the real world.   Its night and day difference. Norovirus, Influenza and every other virus spreads faster in a confined space. My bigger message in pointing all of this out is bigger than JUST coronavirus....its living in fear as a result of hype and hysteria. I refuse to buy into it before looking at cold, hard numbers first, because numbers never lie. Im inside 90 days on a cruise, and im more concerned with breaking my ankle tripping over my 4 year olds toys because statistics show im more likely to do that than contract Coronavirus. Welcome to the boards, btw!

  6. Agree. All of the people here have been knowledgeable, generous, and helpful. I havent cruised in almost 10 years, and hadnt been on an RC ship in 12. I too feel downright responsible and confident, as the ring leader of my group of 8 shipping out in April, thanks to the folks on these boards (and of course @Matt ). The enthusiasm for cruising RC is contagious, and we are already planning another.

If my kids are in the kids club for the day will they get lunch and everything there or do we have to pick them up for lunch?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Adventure Ocean is available/open in "shifts". Not sure exactly how that works as I've never cruised with my children, but I will be in April, so I'm interested, also. @Mattwould know, for sure.

  8. Im a statistics guy.....probably a carryover from being a sports junkie....but here is what stands out to me about the Coronavirus fiasco.  The news says "135 people on the Diamond Princess has confirmed cases of coronavirus"  Sure, sounds like a good amount of people, especially if youre one of the 135.  BUT.....what percentage of the ships total people on board is that? The ship had 3,700 on board (counting crew) when it arrived in Yokohama.  That is 3.6% of people on board, that had or have since been confirmed to have coronavirus.  3.6%!!!!!! I like my chances of NOT getting it.......

Thanks, Steve.  Unfortunately, it is cold, rainy and gloomy here.  It was a a ROUGH ride from DC...but we made it.

Our itin was originally DCA-CLT-EWR but yesterday AA contacted us and advised significant weather delays for CLT and allowed us to make changes without a fee. I opted for a non-stop into JFK and BOY am I glad I did !  I’m not sure whether or not that original flight ever left CLT.  It’s a pricey Uber ride from JFK ($160.00) but I’d rather pay a little more and get here than get stuck in CLT and frankly, I think that is what would have happened.

Yeah....we had a rough go of it in the Charlotte area yesterday. Airport grounded all flights for a while and eclvacuated the control tower. Kids were let out of school early before it all hit, thankfully, as there were multiple tornados in the area. A lot of power outages and road closures due to flooding. 6 inches of rain in a couple hours will do that. Glad you got there, and are cruise ready!

  10. To me, this is further proof that RC pricing and sales is all automated, and based on how things are selling. They track how things on every cruise are selling before, and during sailings. If things are selling REALLY well...up up up go the prices (to maximize profit and/or push people to other items, like other cabanas). If things are not selling, prices drop, and/or out come the 10 Drink Cards while sailing....it really would be pretty straight forward programming and algorithms to automate. 199 is CRAZY...only explanation is they don't want people booking it.

The darkness is enough to make a blind man scared

Its an eerie feeling for sure. Some people have said interior rooms dont get completely dark....but ive done 4 and thats not my experience. When I wake up, I cant see my hand in front of my face, and I have no concept of time.  Its an interesting feeling!!! My wife absolutely loves it! For our upcoming cruise, were going to have our two little ones with us, so were using tea lights as night lights....
