Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Report Posted December 12, 2024 Shine like the Stars For those that followed my blog last Christmas you may recall me mentioning that Reyd was graduating from high school and I had no cruises booked beyond our Europe 2024 “graduation” cruise on Anthem. There is a reason I always stick to a Christmas cruise so I was not terribly surprised when both Lindsay’s and Reyd’s work schedules conflicted with that trip. I typically book our cruises at or very close to release date so I wasn’t sure that star class would be in our future this year. Surprisingly the shorter 3/4 night sailings had ok pricing so I booked Allure for 2024 and Wonder for 2025 at its release date. 2024 has been a hectic and challenging year in some ways; I lost my Dad unexpectedly last spring just a few weeks before Reyd’s “season of grad” began, followed by Lindsay working out of province for 4-5 months, getting Reyd into trade school and settled in his apprenticeship and me adapting to life after high school. Thankfully Reyd continues to live at home while he works as an apprentice and will commute to SAIT (trade school in Calgary) for the 8 weeks in each period. All of that to say we are very grateful to have this time together this year and can’t wait to get this vacation underway! We have a lot planned so let’s get started! Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Who’ Going? The last several years we have had groups of friends join us. This year it is just the 3 of us and we are looking forward to a more relaxed pace (maybe). Cruising with friends is wonderful but busy so it will be nice to set a slower pace if we want. Flight Westjet Premium Economy from YYC- MCO leaving Tuesday December 17th. We flew into MCO because Lindsay and Reyd have a stop planned in Bradenton before making our way to Miami. Luckily we were able to book our return segment from FLL- YYC. Flight prices were terrible but we were able to use a companion voucher and we value the convenience of a direct flight. Plus WJ is the only carrier that flies direct to MCO and FLL. WestJet was plagued with service issues over the summer months so we will see what happens. Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 What are we Celebrating? I always look for a reason to celebrate and this year is no different. We will celebrate my birthday, our 5 year anniversary with Royal and can you believe we turn Diamond I’m the first to admit I know nothing about the crown and anchor loyalty program perks but that won’t stop me from requesting a diamond themed cake and diamond party. Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Cabin I just realized I forgot to give our stateroom details. We are in the ocean facing star loft suite. We have never stayed in this room before and I am looking forward to being back on deck 17 with easy access to the suite lounge and CK. We will miss the convenience of having a 2nd bedroom because Lindsay uses it as his snoring room but I didn’t want to stay in a ATS on an older ship. So I may have told Lindsay the ATS weren’t available. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him right. Sweety, Lovetocruise2002, SweetPea and 3 others 4 1 1 Quote
Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Pre cruise Star Class Changes - Shoreside Genie Program I am not sure how much has been reported on this new program. In August Royal launched a new shoreside genie program. A member of the shoreside genie team reaches out to schedule dining and entertainment along with gathering information on any other requests that would typically have gone directly to your ship genie. The premise behind this program is to reduce admin for the ship genies and streamline some of the pre cruise requests through this shoreside genie team. I can only speak to my experience but this program gets a failing grade. From what I can tell there is a lot of inconsistency on how these shoreside genies operate. Some reply within days while others like mine take weeks to reply. There appears to be no minimum guidelines for return communication with guests. Mine initially reached out Oct 10th and then proceeded to ignore my requests and emails, taking until mid November to finalize my dining requests. I finally took @Lovetocruise2002 advice and stopped communicating with my shoreside genie once our dining was finally scheduled. I will have my ship genie fix everything because dining doesn’t match up with the entertainment schedule. Instead of the ship genie reaching out 30 days prior to sail date, they now reach out a week prior so I should be hearing from mine on Friday. The biggest mistake Royal made was calling this a shoreside genie program because the service doesn’t come close to that of a ship genies. This experience will definitely be going in the post cruise survey. WAAAYTOOO, Cactus527, MaryS and 3 others 3 2 1 Quote
Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Excursions On our first stop at PDCC we have a hideout cabana booked plus the guys are doing the jet ski excursion. I am really looking forward to experiencing the new adult area. The one and only time we were at PDCC was 3 years ago and this area was not built yet. I feel like I got a pretty good deal on the cabana, paying about $1k once OBC was applied. On our second stop we have an over water cabana booked. When I first started looking, prices were close to $4k so I told myself this may not happen. But much to my surprise prices kept dropping and I grabbed the overwater cabana on the July 4th sale for $1678 less OBC of $700. That price has remained the lowest price through the Black Friday sale. The last time we were there we had an overwater cabana. Lindsay didn’t realize water was in cans, not bottles so he didn’t drink any water all day and went from drink to drink, feeling very dehydrated and unwell by the time we got back to the ship. I’m sure you can see where this is headed but long story short I ended up messaging our genie Shane to see if there was a star class line to bypass the very long line returning to the ship. In Shane style he messaged back saying he had reached out to security and they would be opening more security lanes immediately. And yes, Lindsay made it safely back on board. I will monitor his water intake more closely this time. We have no plans in Nassau. I would be happy to stay onboard and relax CravingaCruise, WAAAYTOOO, Lovetocruise2002 and 3 others 6 Quote
Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Onboard Purchases I can’t believe I am saying this but I have not booked a photo package yetI have no idea what I will do. I may see what the pictures are like and do a photo book once onboard for each cruise segment because that also includes the digitals. Prices for the various photo packages are really expensive on these shorter sailings. Basically the cost of 50 digitals on a 4 night cruise are as expensive as 100 digitals on a 7 night cruise. We had lots of fun with photo shenanigans last year with our friends but with it being just the 3 of us, shenanigans will be limited. I know I will do something with photos; I just haven’t figured out what yet. Feel free to pass along any ideas. Cactus527, Lovetocruise2002, CravingaCruise and 1 other 4 Quote
Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Car Rental We are renting from Sixt at MCO because we can drop off right at the Intercontinental, which is so convenient. I have a full size SUV booked, mostly for comfort plus I know it will accommodate all our luggage. While my goal is to reduce the amount of luggage this year, I need a vehicle that can accommodate it all just in case I fail. Post cruise we have a full size SUV booked with Enterprise, picking up at Miami airport and dropping at FLL airport. We started taking the rental car damage insurance a few years ago because it just makes dropping off the vehicle easier. They would always reach out days after returning the vehicle trying to get money for something minor even when we had videos and pictures of the rental before leaving their lot. In the grand scheme of things the cost is worth it for the convenience of walking away and not hearing from them. SweetPea, MaryS, CravingaCruise and 1 other 4 Quote
Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Genie news As I mentioned under the new shoreside genie program ship genies typically reach out 1 week prior to sail date so I should be hearing from ours on Friday. The shoreside genie confirmed that we will have Haffner as our genie. Although I believe he is nearing the end of his first contract in January, the reviews on him have been excellent so I am looking forward to hearing from him. I will report back when I hear from Haffner. SweetPea, MaryS, CravingaCruise and 1 other 4 Quote

Jax Posted December 12, 2024 Author Report Posted December 12, 2024 Other changes to Star Class re: specialty dining Word that Royal was replacing star class specialty dining perks with an unlimited dining package began to circulate in the fall. From what I have heard, guests that booked prior to Nov 1, 2024 will have their reservation grand fathered and not be subject to the upcharges. The only one that would have affected us on Allure was Izumi Hibachi at an additional cost of $15 per guest. My shoreside genie informed me that we would have to pay this extra upcharge but it should be waived once onboard because our reservation was booked prior to Nov 1st. For those wondering if the holiday menu on Dec 24 and 25th (subject to an extra charge for guests with unlimited dining package) are still included for star class, my shoreside genie confirmed it was and we would not be subject to an extra charge. I am not sure if @Lovetocruise2002 received the same news about New Years Eve also being included. I will confirm with Haffner and report back. Part of the appeal of star class was its inclusive nature. These changes have been poorly implemented and communicated and seem petty. I have no idea why Royal has moved forward with this change, but it will also be going in the post cruise survey. SweetPea, Cactus527, CravingaCruise and 3 others 6 Quote

Royal can suck it. And i will die on that hill. Royal can have fun overcharging new SC Cruisers who don't know any better. When the survey comes asking if we'd recommend Star Class, I'll unload. Out of curiosity I checked the photo packages and a digital photo package of 50 is $209.99 per cruise segment. Like what?!! To compare, last year I paid that for 100 digital photos for a 7 night cruise. I can’t justify spending $420 USD for 100 digital photos so I think I will check onboard about a photobook option. I am curious what you guys think of this price. Too high? Worth it? Maybe purchase a package of 10 digitals for $109.99 per cruise segment. SweetPea and CravingaCruise 2 Quote

Jax Posted December 13, 2024 Author Report Posted December 13, 2024 Well in other news I can claim a victory with the shipping gods on another package. My airwrap was an original and recently started to lose some power and would shut off for no reason, almost like it was overheating. I definitely did NOT want to have issues on my vacay so I ordered a new one and paid for 2 day shipping to ensure I received it in time. Everything was looking good, the item landed in YYC and was at the shippers sort facility, set to be delivered later that day. Then I received a text saying my item was delayed indefinitely due to weather. I couldn’t believe it because I knew the item was in YYC and it was sunny, clear and +2. When I couldn’t reach the shipper I contacted Dyson and was a bit snippy. I’m not sure if that call to Dyson helped but I received the item at 8pm that night!!! For those that use Dyson hair products I am really surprised by the changes to it. Look at the size of the barrels compared to the original version. And instead of having to switch attachments there is a dial that changes direction of the airflow. It’s pretty too! I am really happy with it so far and hope it works on the ship. Jax Posted December 13, 2024 Author Report Posted December 13, 2024 I am blaming this parcel delay for being very behind in packing. I need to tackle packing asap so the first step to get me out of my procrastination was to print luggage tags. You all know we (let’s be honest, it’s me) don’t travel light so let’s have some fun with this. Let’s play how many luggage tags will I need???? In my defence I have never printed more than 6 and one was for a carry on. CravingaCruise and WAAAYTOOO 1 1 Quote
