Whatever you are comfortable with will be fine. Dress on formal night, even for adults, runs a full range. Some fully participate, some just dress nicely, some don't even do that! I will suggest that a cruise can be a great time to get a good professional group picture as there will be photographers set up in several places. It can be easier than making an appointment at a studio and making a special trip. FrankC and ChessE4 1
Xaa
I think whatever matches the formality of what the rest of the family is wearing makes the most sense. If you're all going to dress up, fantastic. Formal night isn't really a requirement for anyone. You'll see folks dressed up a lot and some just like they were the night before. melmar02
We choose to dress up. I have my son dress in black slacks and a shirt/tie combo from JCP, and I think I even got one at Walmart one year around Christmas or Easter time. Relatively inexpensive and usually there are enough options that we can coordinate for pictures. FrankC
Pooch
Met a lovely 3 generation family from the UK on our last cruise. The 2 little boys, maybe 6 & 8, wore white dinner jackets. Two little James Bond’s sooo cute! Neesa, FrankC and WAAAYTOOO 1
tjcruisers
I’d say whatever you have or their comfortable with. If they have a collar golf shirt that is more than fine. I wouldn’t purchase formal attire for them (unless you really want to). FrankC
FrankC
Thank you everyone my boys aren't ones to dress up! I want them to be comfortable because if they aren't I'm sure it's going to be a very bad dinner sitting. But if a collared shirt and nice shorts or slacks is good enough then I think I can manage to get them into that! Again Thank you Everyone! smokeybandit
They'd be fine with shorts and a t-shirt
NotPayinExtra
Put children in whatever makes them happy. There is no set rules for dress on formal or any other night.
DJsMrs
We usually put kids in jeans/khakis or nice (nicer) shorts and a golf shirt and sneakers.
bobroo
Kids on formal night wear whatever their mom wants them to be wearing in the family pictures that are going to be taken before and after.
mac66
Sometimes its fun and classy to dress up and eat in a formal setting using good manners. My 30 something year old kids still dress up on cruises, something instilled on them back when you had to dress for dinner every night. It made an impression they still talk about. My youngest was 7 on his first cruise. 4 years later, and he still calls it getting dressed his fancy pants clothes. The only time he wears those clothes are formal nights and his piano recitals.
