Start booking as soon as you can.  You can always cancel or reschedule . Also watch for sales on : Excursions, Drinks, Spa, Specialty Dinners;  especially on Black Friday.    Booking early allows you do those things as they sell out quite fast or shows are all reserved.  You are prepaying now and not hit with a large Folio tab  at the end of the cruise which  helps with the budget and gives you  a nice piece of mind.    Welcome to the blog and enjoy your first cruise of hopefully more to come.   P.S. we miss Chicago.

Bring or buy  a hair dyer. The wife found out after our first cruise that those on board are BAD NEWS.  Like you stated after you arrive go to Walmart and get the items that you did not pack so as to keep your luggage space and weight down.  And if you buy an inexpensive dryer just leave it and some employee will love you for it.  We buy an inexpensive fan for the cabin to make some background noise on cruises when we have to fly to the port and just leave it.   Also we buy toiletries and snacks etc. to keep luggage space and weight down for souvenirs  when we go back home.  Sure beats paying for an overweight or extra suitcase.     Welcome to the blog and enjoy your cruise.

As do we and we go to every photo station for pictures.    In all honesty I wish we had kept notes from every cruise we have been on .  The reason being is  we could literally write a best seller on what we have seen.

Birth certificate, Drivers License if they have one,  School I.D. and you will be fine.  Spend the saved passport money on specialty dinner and drinks.  At age 16 you get the 10 year passport.  If you were going to Europe then I would get a passport.  Caribbean travel  is a Birth Certificate.  Like they say in the Caribbean : Don`t WORRY   BE HAPPY and enjoy the cruise.  And last get lots of  family pictures taken. Those memories are precious.   

We choose the itineraries not the ship. The beauty of the smaller ships is the ports that they will visit as to the larger ships that can`t  get into those ports. .  We are 60ish as well.  As long as we have a balcony the rest does not really matter.   

If there s no tender ticket get down to the gangway early.  We are doing the same cruise next Sept.  as well as non RC excursions in  most of the ports.  .  Welcome to the Blog.  Enjoy your cruise.

Also look up recent cruise compass issues. And perhaps check reviews of recent cruises of  your ship on various web sites.  Maybe even decide upon which future cruises you might want to book.  On our last cruise the wife emphatically stated we are not booking any future cruises.   I said OK. First day guess where we ended up going.  Future cruise desk.  And set a record for future cruises booked.  Not 1 or 2 but 3 .  Believe me I did not say a word.  I was speechless.  It must something in the food or beverages on board.  Now she`s wanting tot know when the future cruises will be released.   Do I lie or tell the truth?

SORRY to hear about the RUDE rep you encountered. We have had that happen to us on several occasions.  We have found between the hrs. of 9-5 weekdays you will get the most polite and knowledgeable people.  And all of the comments in this post are correct.  We constantly book and re book excursions, drink pkgs.,etc.   Their is another sale going on now as well. Also it never hurts to ask for a supervisor.  If you don`t use a travel agent you may want to consider one.  An excellent company is MEI.  They can work a lot of magic in resolving issues better than most of us. There is also the option of doing non RC excursions which we do quite often.  Look on trip adviser and cruise critic for ideas.  WELCOME to the blog and to Royal Caribbean.  Hoping you have  a great cruise.

Honestly we don`t care where we sail from. I may catch flak for this but folks from the south are less stressed and laid back than folks from the northeast.  And  they are actually friendlier and a lot more polite.  And there are a lot of transplants there as well so you will have a nice mix of fellow cruisers.  Also the cruise prices tend to be cheaper .   On our cruise in Feb. a gentleman at our table is of Scottish heritage and wore a kilt on formal night.  PLEASE give it a go.  And you may have  a Scottish brogue but they will have have a southern drawl.   It will make for a nice mix.
