Confirmed on this morning's Cruise Radio News podcast -- extension was originally going to be 120 days and go into August, but got reduced to 100 by the White House. So we're still at mid-to-late July (depending on that final publication date).

Maybe I’m wrong (wouldn’t be the first time) but I don’t read this article as lessening the the CDC order to 80 days; rather this article is referring to the original 120 day order being downgraded to 100 (article written April 13)
The document in the public inspection section of the federal register still shows 100 days and is due for publishing at midnight.

Florida has declared wrestling (WWE) essential.

If wrestling on TV is essential to the Florida economy surely the cruise industry is as well.  Hopefully the cruise industry in Florida can get the same status at some point as we move forward.

Don’t forget.  The Federal government, for the first time in history, declared a national emergency in all 50 States.  That declaration has not been lifted.  The President has unprecedented authority right now.  Not saying that the Federal government would use it, but it’s in place at the moment.

While I'm somewhat relieved to see this news, the reality remains that even if the US allows cruise ships to resume sailings from its ports, that doesn't mean spit if all the destination countries / ports remain closed. Canada could choose to stay closed off through the summer; as could England, Spain, and other countries that normally serve as destination ports for transatlantic cruises. And if the states that own the cruise ports decide they're not ready for that influx of tourist traffic, the Federal government can't stop them from continuing a block.
The governors of NY, NJ, PA, CT, MD, DE, and RI had a big conference call with the press yesterday afternoon, hosted by Andrew Cuomo (governor of NY). They were unanimous in their statement that since the states ultimately had to be in charge of shutting down businesses and enforcing isolation policies when the Federal government wouldn't provide clear guidance or actions, it will therefore be the states, not the Federal government, who decide when and how they reopen for business and resume normal activities. They also stated that it would be done in a controlled and measured manner to avoid causing a second wave like Hong Kong, China, and other APAC countries recently experienced.
So definitely hope for the best, but continue to contingency plan for the worst.

FWIW, I applied back in March for an EIDL loan, but still nothing. I know the PPP is already basically "sold out".
Back to the layoffs, terrible news. I've been laid off a number of times in my career, and it never, ever gets any easier or doesn't make you feel like someone yanked the carpet from underneath you.
I'll be honest, I'm surprised it took this long for the first round of layoffs. I commend RC for trying to maintain operations this long, but I fear this is not the end either.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have applied for the PPP loan which would cover salaries for up to 2 months. I believe it to be fully forgiven if used for such. Awaiting word on that, my bank submitted our application last week. No timeline on approval process.
Timing unknown for so much. Hope everyone stays safe and healthy till we begin to resume normal lives and cruising again!

Though I appreciate your sentiment not all of us, as one, want to rebook. My business has been shut down, no income coming in. We can feel bad for the employees being laid off, but there are those of us with cruises up in the air that would prefer Royal cancel and isssue refunds so we can support our own families at this time.

Actually i was going to ask " what the hell your original post had to do with cruising when Matt had posted that certain topics were not allowed"

Someone posted about tests being done on flights and how it could be used for cruiseships, straight away you turn it into a world wide conspiracy just to get your DNA.
Im pretty sure thats the type of thing matt is refering to with regards comments not to post.
Theres a time and a place for that type of thing

ONLY READ IF YOU WANT SOMETHING POSITIVE
I knew this was going to happen, just was patiently waiting for an announcement specific to the actual date. Okay, with this being the case I still have 5 sailings my closest one 28 June 2020. Not sure if that one is a go BUT Sharla Manglass with MEI-Travel secured me savings on all of my future sailings due to this April promotion, so if you have reservations time to re-price! If you don't have the benefit of an amazing TA like me call late into the evening when the wait times are shorter. Here is wishing you some amazing future savings, thanks again Sharla...always looking out for us!

My advice is to wait it out. I think prices for next year are still rooted in a pricing model based on pre-coronavirus.
I think once cruises resume, there will be a break in price when demand is significantly less.

So we're saying the same thing.  The new ships are good and the old ships are not.  They need to retire the entire Fantasy Class.  Not only are they rusty and old, they are not environmentally friendly, have old engines, water systems, and sewer systems and simply not equipped to handle the volume or regulation.  They are beginning to take steps in the direction with the Dream Class in 2009 (Dream, Breeze, and Magic).  Those are awesome ships.  Then came the Vista, Horizon, and Mardi Gras.

8+ day Southern Caribbean cruise on newer Carnival ships are really good deal/experience in my view.

Plus 1.  this is my exact point.  They have about 20 ships that I would not choose to purchase a trip on (but that I would sail on if part of a group or someone else purchased for us) and about 6 or 7 that I would.  RCCL is pretty much opposite of that.  This fact combined with the decades old reputation of a "frat party at sea" and "Walmart of cruise lines" has millions of Americans who've never seen a cruise ship claiming Carnival is the devil on Earth.  At least that's my opinion of the problem they have.

I agree 100%.   I couldn't believe how well CCL made that work.  If they opened those on land, they would make a killing.
There use to be a Johnny Rockets near me, it was always empty and they eventually closed.

This was almost exactly our experience, did some of the older Carnival's out of Tampa, swore we would never cruise Carnival again and moved "up" to Royal. Got roped into doing a cruise on Vista with friends and realized what we disliked about Carnival was the older/smaller ships not the brand itself.

I can also add that we ate speciality dining all (8) nights on the Carnival Horizon and the dining experience was also leaps & bounds ahead of RC. Not saying anything is wrong with RC speciality dining but we just found CCL to have better service, better menus and better choices across the board in terms of dining options. You can be loyal to more then one brand. I swore off CCL for more then a decade because I thought it was a bit too “budget” but my opinion has changed over the last couple years. The longer 7+ days to more exotic ports of call are better in regards to the ships and the overall experience.

We have sailed on Carnival, NCL and Royal and I would definitely cruise again on Carnival or NCL’s  newer ships.  They each have their good points. I did not care much for NCL complimentary dining. It was lackluster and dreary.

The Carnival topic comes up here often.  Everyone has their own taste, I get that.
For us, after about 3 days of Windjammer lunch on RCL, we're looking for something else.  Carnival's newer ships never leave us wanting something else for lunch.  We are not big on upgraded restaurants, so we do the MDR unless it is a special occasion.  Carnival's dinner menus are as good as Royals to us... if not better.
The place Carnival falls short is its fleet.  The majority of their ships are 20 or so years old.  They did not get into the arms race of bigger better ships in the early 2000s.  However, their newer ships, starting the the Magic and Breeze are fantastic.  There just aren't as many of them as RCCL, NCL, and now MSC in North America.
People who dismiss Carnival out of hand are really missing out in my opinion.
