I actually prefer to stay in an Air BnB when we cruise out of Miami (especially if we are in a group). You can find some amazing rentals there for a fraction of the price.

In my experience, I doubt it would help. 
I'm just happy to have questions about things like The Key instead  of "will my cruise actually sail?" lol

When Royal introduced the upgraded room service menu a few years ago they added the service fee at the same time.  
Back in the old days it wasn't unusual to see plates lining the hallway with piles of uneaten food because people would order a bunch of anything and everything.  Why not?  It's free.  The $8 fee breaks people of that mindset.  I don't see the same waste anymore.  It's definitely cut down on the piles of food lining the hallway.  
There are some great items from room service.  Before Playmakers came around the new room service burger was one of the better burgers on board.  Some nights I just feel like eating chicken wings and they're not bad from room service.  Not as hot as Playmaker wings but cheaper.

There hasn't been a gratuity added on top of the $7.95. That is the service fee. I remember reading in the past of people taking advantage of this free room service to order 1 cookie or something. So RCG added the fee to avoid wasted resources like that. You tip at your discretion.
 

In the name of science I've moved to 8518 on a January Symphony sailing.  It's always interesting to try the cabins that are different and a few extra steps will help burn of the WJ effect.  
I like deck 8 for easy access to Central Park.  

That room is a forward cabin- way up at the front! Seems neat, just not aft.
