hoofbeats95
This may be a dumb question and I know it's relative to everyone and what your plans are. But how much cash is needed on a cruise? I can't decide how much to bring. Obviously the onboard account will go to a credit card. I will use credit cards at port probably. Where do I *need* cash? Jolly Ogre
Cash is only used in the ports when you are off the ship. You don't "need" cash unless you "want" to spend "cash" in some of the markets that you visit.
SYRbob
You'll need cash for the casino and for any additional gratuities you might want to provide to ship's crew for exceptional service.

So in the casino you buy chips with cash and play table games with chips? What about slots (for my wife)?

What? Do you now have to have cash to use the casino? I haven’t cruised in RCL in a couple of years. Is this some new thing? You can no longer use your seapass? Thanks
melmar02
We bring cash for the casino, small souvenirs in port, transportation and tips in port (taxi, excursion guides), and lots of $1s for tips on the ship ($1-2 for each bag for porters getting on and off the ship, room service). I have never wanted to buy anything big / expensive in port, but we would use a credit card if we did. For the small souvenirs we just use cash. SYRbob
Primarily you use cash in the casino. Most cruise lines charge a service charge to draw cash from your sea pass account. Yes, you insert cash into the machine and any remaining balance stays on the account until you withdraw it.
Jolly Ogre
The casino is not mandatory therefore you do not need to spend money there. So no cash "needed". Same with tipping. there is no "need" for it as it is automatically added to your account. You can chose to do these optional things, but the OP asked how much "cash is needed". The answer is zero cash is needed.
Matt
A couple hundred should suffice, especially if you are using your credit card wherever possible. Perhaps $300 or so, but it obviously depends on how many ports you are visiting and what your plans are.

Yes, basically. I found it works exactly like land based casinos. If you are playing a table game, you don't need to visit the cashier first and can give your cash directly to the dealer to buy chips. If you are playing roulette which uses special, table specific chips, you would have to ask them to swap out your chips for the general denomination ones and then cash out at the cashier for cash again when you are done. Slots take cash just like a land casino.
hoofbeats95
So for slots I need cash right? Is there an atm on ship?
Atlantix2000
There's been an ATM on each of the ships I have cruised and I think it's a safe bet that there will be one on every ship. I can't speak to the fee to use the ATM but would imagine it to be an expensive way to get cash unless your bank will reimburse you for it. Hoski
There is a 5% fee to get cash from your sea card in the casino unless you've reached a certain level and I forget what that is but hubby is at it. I've heard the fee at the on board ATM is high.
melmar02
Does guest services charge a fee to cash travelers checks? Maybe that's an alternative if you don't want to carry a lot of cash onboard.
