Has anyone used a Passport Card?  It appears it can stand alone as ID for the cruise.

(I know it cannot be used for air travel in case of an emergency.)

We use the passport card since we're not needing to fly.  We haven't got our REAL ID's done yet, just regular driver's license.

I've only been on one cruise, but I took both a regular passport and a passport card with me. When the Cruise Compass recommended leaving the passport in my room instead of taking it on a shore excursion, I took the card with me instead. I'm not sure if that's the best practice or not, but it gave me extra peace of mind to have a secondary ID.

Every cruise I can.

I still have my book safely stored with me, but the card is convenient for cruising, domestically.
