steverk
So I'm currently on Adventure and we were unable to stop in Costa Maya due to bad weather and damage to the dock fenders. To compensate, we sailed to Cozumel and arrived about 6:30pm for an overnight stay. Last night, there was a fairly lengthy survey about it. I have another cruise booked on Adventure on January 23. About a month ago, I received an email that Progresso can't handle a ship of our size and we would do an overnight in Cozumel instead. So, is Royal using these 2 cruises to test out overnight stays there? Allen2
Ampurp85
Because of the hurricane when I sailed Nav in Sept we did an overnight at Cozumel. I don't know if it is a test per se or just the best option they have to make sure they visit enough ports. steverk

If there is enough interest and it's a big hit with guests, they could do more. They have to weigh that against the extra costs of porting overnight (security, port fees, etc.) to see if it makes sense
Suzanne Elise
Ha I was just on the 1/23. For me it was a bit plus and part of the reason we booked our first cruise in more than a decade. We rented at car which was great, but parking overnight was a hassle. I liked being able to go to dinner and relax in port in the evening. I do love Merida mexico so Progresso would have been a cool port, but I was happy with the way it ended up. My first cruise I was in Rio for 2 nights. Zambia-Zaire
Overnight stays needs to occur on the left coast. ..to build up & enhance itineraries there.
steverk
Today I was looking around on Royal's website and I find 3 cruises with overnights in Cozumel. It appears that Royal really is looking at making overnights there a regular thing. Cruises I found were all on Voyager out of Galveston. smokeybandit
I wonder if those are related to port space issues at Progresso

Viasolus
I'm on the Nov 27 2023 Voyager cruise. I found the idea of staying overnight in Cozumel intriguing. Was hoping for an expanded Chichen Itza excursion, but none offered so far.
TexanTwoStep
Voyager is offering a couple of 5 Day cruises out of Galveston with an overnight stay in Cozumel. I agree, I like the idea. It gives people who want to make the trek to Tulum or Chichen Itza more time for that activity Jzx1103

That means you can't go to the mainland until the morning of the second day. Therefore, it really doesn't give more time to see the mainland. IMO it would be better if the ship arrived in the morning and stayed until the following morning. Ryan79
CrznTxn
The other sad part of an overnight stay in Cozumel is that the port pretty much shuts down after 5pm and there is nothing open. The local restaurants close as well as the bars so unless you have a hotel room at a resort (won't happen) then you pretty much stay on the ship in the evenings. Even sadder is the Casino is shut down the whole time they are in port so no entertainment or free drinks there.

On the 2 cruises I took with overnight stays, the bars, like margaritaville, that are in or close to the port were open very late. They were very popular with the crew. It shows us arriving at 8am first day and leaving 4pm the 2nd day. We're planning on going to Chitzen Itza on our own the first day. steverk

We're just gonna go on our own, I did the research, well ferry over ourselves and rent a car in Playa. Last Ferry back to Cozumel is 9pm. Plenty of time.
