plasticmaster Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 I'll be visiting CocoCay on my next cruise in April and will be bringing my own snorkel gear. Where are the best spots for seeing the most marine life? Are there any wrecks, reefs, or structures accessible from the beach that attract lots of fish? Quote
Matt Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 Chill Island, near snorkel rental, is where you want to go. You'll want to go get out early before swimmers scare away wildlife. VirtKitty, WAAAYTOOO, Jlatour and 2 others 4 1 Quote
OCSC Mike Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 Be on the look out for lemon sharks and nurse sharks, my wife has seen both roughly where Matt described. I can't manage to find them from my lounge chair behind my frozen drink. WAAAYTOOO, Jlatour and EvergreenCruzers 2 1 Quote
ChessE4 Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 We snorkel at Chill Island and have never seen sharks, but I have seen jellyfish. Quote
Chris Fish Posted October 3, 2022 Report Posted October 3, 2022 Rock formation on both sides of Chill island. Snorkel before 9:30 or 10 am to see anything. After that its pretty scarce. Quote
Jlatour Posted November 21, 2022 Report Posted November 21, 2022 We brought our own gear and snorkeled along Chill Island Beach. The water was a bit cloudy because of so many swimmers, so we snorkeled out to the plane wreck. It was there we spotted a shark. About 7 feet long. He wasn’t interest in us one bit. Carin Posted January 20, 2023 Report Posted January 20, 2023 Jlatour should I be worried? Are these sharks dangerous? Quote
Austin Posted January 21, 2023 Report Posted January 21, 2023 Have seen a nurse shark, but they are harmless. Quote
BethGR Posted January 21, 2023 Report Posted January 21, 2023 So only around Chill Island Beach for snorkeling? In my complete ignorance of how an island works, I'll ask - why wouldn't there be fish in other areas? Does there need to be a rock formation or such? Nothing on the other side at South Beach, etc.? Thanks! - Ignorant but curious.... Quote

South Beach has a sandbar, so water depth is very tidal and there's less marine life over there unless you go way out past the sand bar or snorkel to the left towards the over the water cabanas by the Beach Club. There are tons of fish and some sharks and rays that swim around under the over the water cabanas if you want to swim that far out from South Beach. BethGR 1 Quote
