Starlink for home use has really high hardware costs.  Or at least they did when it was first available in my area.

Hardware is of little concern on the scale of a cruise ship - this is the company that just spend 1.2 Billion on their latest ship. Starlink likely will have cheaper ongoing costs, and without doubt would have a lower cost-per-usage considering the incredible (relative) download speeds Starlink is capable of. I would like to think the price would come down, but even if not, the value for money would be unparalleled by other cruise lines.

Well, after a little bit of digging, I have something to add to this...

Royal Caribbean have filed a trademark for the phrase AquaDome. It's there as both "cruise ship services" and "restaurant and bar services". It's not necessarily in reference to this creation... but if it is, what do we think it is? The trademark was filed back in January, but I haven't seen anything about it since.

Other trademarks of interest are "Zone Zero" and "Absolute Zero" - Personally am hoping it's an ice bar! 😂

I downloaded the new app, but appears the same in all respects (Android). I may change my tune inside the 90 day window.

This is what the Apple App Store says about the recent update. It is interesting as Android is known to receive updates before Apple due to more relaxed regulations, but nevertheless give it a few days and you may find it appears. If you still have over 90 days then there's no rush just yet. Good luck!

  4. Hi all,

I'm sailing on the 9th of January 2020 from Singapore on Quantum of the Seas, and have been informed by Royal that we will be eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for our stop in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Interestingly, we have been asked to bring "4 full-color Passport photos, so the onboard team can process your application". I've never heard of this before and can't see anything online about this requirement. Has anyone been in this situation with a past cruise, and if so did you bring the photos? What was the outcome of such? Were they necessary?

    Thanks everyone in advance,

    Bryce

Either one works for me but when you complete the check in using the app, (found out the hard way) you can't go back and edit it....you'd have to use the computer to edit in that situation.

This is no longer the case! In the latest version of the app, released within the past week, there is now an option to edit check-in. These struggles are now over!!

Allure was the first beta, then Harmony.

It's a matter of getting notifications to work.  A chat app that doesn't tell you when you receive a chat is pretty useless - who wants to sit there with the app open waiting to see if you get a text?

To make notifications work they have to open up the firewall for Apple's notification platform to function but they can't be selective.  All notification start working and iMessage happens to use the same ports and protocols so iMessage works too.  With iMessage working to anyone around the world some people wouldn't buy Voom.  They can't have that so... they are desperately trying to figure out how to make iPhones do what they can't do.  The Apple ios sandboxes applications so when they aren't active they can't notify without using Apple's notifications platform.

This is why the loophole existed on RoyalIQ enabled ships that allowed iMessage to work.  That's why they have one non-RoyalIQ ship and one RoyalIQ ship in the chat beta just to be able to try both versions and prove (or disprove) that various attempts to beat Apple work or not.

Honestly it's futile and they may never open chat fleet wide in the app unless Apple changes their ways in some future version.

Wow!! Thank you so much. This is the first proper explanation of this I’ve ever seen, and trust me, I’ve done a lot of googling! Only time will tell, I guess. I do hope they can work this out soon.

When will the "Chat feature" be added to the ap.?  I will be sailing on Serenade of the Seas Dec. 9th and was hoping to be able to communicate with my wife and others on board. On our last cruise on Brilliance in September, I was told that this feature should be available on ships that have the ap.  by the end of this year. Does anyone know?

This has been my number one question about the app for ages and it’s still only on one ship (i believe it’s harmony but don’t quote me on that) and it’s a real shame because quantum class even used to have the feature during the days of the Royal IQ app, which has now been removed from the app store, but surely that means quantum already has the infrastructure and hardware needed to reimplement this feature? When you look at the progress of other lines in the field it definitely looks like Royal better start acting soon or they’ll fall behind.

  8. Unfortunately, Oasis Class is too large to do Panama Canal sailings. Empress of the Seas is the only ship that Ould comfortably fit, with Sovereign of the Seas and Vision Class ships being a tight squeeze so I'm not 100% sure. And Empress is based West Coast until mid-2021 so far, so nothing in the near future. Unfortunately Panama Canal is looking slightly unlikely. On the other hand, Western Caribbean sailings are not impossible.

  9. Hi all,

I’ve seen some details about the drydock with Quantum entered yesterday but I was wondering if anyone could add onto what I’ve seen?

I’m aware that it’s simply a five year refurb and not a royal amplification, but I read that a laser game and an escape room were in store. What have you heard?

Also, does anyone know of which broadway show will be on Quantum from next month onwards?

It would be...just like a fully smoking anywhere cruise would be successful!

Yeah but that wouldn't go down very well. They would struggle to get the smell out of the ship. Have you ever stayed in a cabin where the people before you clearly smoked in their room? I have and it's very unpleasant as a non-smoker myself.
