Both of these sound 100% accurate for me as well!

Thank you for your service to our country and I hope you enjoy Alaska as much as I did!
As you almost certainly know, a cruise tour is a one way Alaska cruise combined with a land vacation.
I've never actually been on this combination, but back in 2006, my in-laws treated us to a 1 way northbound on Radiance of the Seas followed by a few days sightseeing on our own in Anchorage.  My 4 kids were between 9 and 15. Everyone enjoyed it tremendously!
Some of the things they enjoyed the most:
Whale watching during dinner in the Windjammer (Dessert first of course!) Swimming during the family hours in the solarium. They especially enjoyed the waves that were generated by the rocking of the boat. Touching a piece of glacier that the crew fished out of Tracy Arm Fjord Riding the Whit Pass Railway Climbing Flat Top mountain in Anchorage. It was an incredible trip that I hope to do again with the family in 2023.
As far as excursions and comments about some of the ports:
Ketchikan: Very walkable place with tons to see just off the ship.  If you've got the dough, then I'd suggest a float plane trip to Misty Fjords. Absolutely incredible Juneau: Another very walkable town.  There's a tram to the top of the mountain, or you can walk the trail for free.  Mendenhall Glacier is there as well.  If I ever go back, I'll make it a point to visit at least one of these attractions. Skagway: This is another fun town.  It's got a national historic park there, and it took me a while to figure out that the park and town are one in the same.  As you walk down the street, some of the buildings will have businesses. Some will have national park displays.  Sounds weird, but it's actually kinda cool. This is also the jumping off point for the White Pass Railroad. Icy Straight Point: When I was there, things were just getting started and you pretty much had to make your own fun.  Perhaps someone will have a recent experience Sitka: Like everywhere else, it is very walkable. When I was there, it was a very long tender boat ride to port. Therefore, plan to eat lunch on shore so you get as much as possible out of it.  You'll find plenty to do within a 15 walk of the pier. Seward: I wish I had spent more time here.  There's a national park in town that is worth checking out. I have more recently done a 7 day round trip Seattle trip with my wife. One way is better!
I hope you found this helpful. Please let me know if you need more of my ramblings, 🙂

There is a new Black Friday Casino offer, out yesterday.  As part of that offer, for the first time ever, Club Royale is offering double rewards points for casino play time.  Not to be confused with Crown & Anchor points, casino rewards points are awarded for casino play and is based on the amount of time you play, the amount of your wagers and the individual games (or slots) that you play.  Award points can result in "free" casino cruises, cumulative points towards qualifying for the following year's casino status and discounts on future cruises.
We booked an additional Mariner sailing to go along with the other 2 we have, giving us a B3B on Mariner in Sept. 2021.  Fingers crossed that they will allow a B3B by then and that they will allow >7 nights on board.

I have to agree with you.  Nothing that I wanted had gone down below the usual sales price.

Each dinner on the cruise is approximately equal in calories to those consumed for Thanksgiving dinner. Total for the day on the cruise exceeds total for the day on Thanksgiving.

"Sale" doesn't mean your price will go down, just that the price showing is xx% lower than the new phantom price.

Every one has different vacation budgets, that's what is great about cruises, they can accommodate most of them.
Even at $400 difference I'd want to pick my own room, at $141 (actually $170 I'm a midship guy) it's a no brainier for me. That's because I can afford it and don't like to gamble with guarantee category.
If you can still afford the cruise comfortably and not have to cut out a "must do" to get the room, do it. However, if it comes at a sacrifice, think about how much time you spend in the room and if it's worth it to you.

Seriously, though, glad you were able to make extra time yesterday so that today is a nice leisurely trip. May all the remaining steps along the way be equally smooth!

Our last cruise was Feb 7 when we took my MIL on her first cruise for her birthday.  She had a couple hard years (FIL passed away, couldn't get her house sold, moving), and we really wanted this trip to be special for her. The crew really went above and beyond to make her birthday special, but my favorite memory is of her and the kids playing in the pool at Paradise Beach in Cozumel

On second thought, it may be when the kids and I went to the bird aviary in Costa Maya, and came back to DH and my MIL waiting for us at Cantina Latina.

I have not done an aft cabin on an AK cruise, but what I can say is that if I had that opportunity when we booked ours I would have taken it GLADLY.  I we had a junior suite on the starboard side on a northbound cruise.  Think of it this way you get to see everything we saw but in rather than just getting one side of the ship you get to see both sides and in both directions.  I would GLADLY take that spot if you do not want it!!!!  😆

As a glass half-full kind of guy, I think @Matt may have accidentally provided RCG an invaluable service: a database of individuals who should ABSOLUTELY 100% NOT be involved on a test cruise due to an inability to process information and/or follow directions.  I'd think Dr. Johnson, Dr. Gottlieb and the rest of the Healthy Sail Panel would appreciate dodging this entire magazine worth of bullets.
