Payment issues with RCI payment gateway (3D Secure)

Hi,

I´ve been in endless dialogue with RCI, both their customer service and over phone, been over the past 30 days. Have gotten computer says no answer all the way.

I´m curious if other people are experience this issue, we are getting the 3D Secure error that RCI does not support the EU payment regulations, so the bank refuse their payment request if they are over 250 EUR. So by this they are not compliant to take internet transactions over 250 EUR within EU.

And the second part is they have excluded all cards issued in Iceland for some reason (was not last year), so I´ve had to use card issued in the UK to be able to use cards but needs to be under the 250 EUR per transaction.

This just changed this year, as I´ve used preciously the same cards in 2022 so this is a new issue I ran into the last 30 days with them.

I send here as I´ve gotten no where with RCI and hoping this then not an issue at their ships as well?

Hi @Olafur

I have had issues with card payments over the last year or so and it appears to be linked to the additional security measures implemented by the EU. I don't know if that would affect you in Iceland as part of the EEA, rather than the EU, but these days I need to create an electronic card that is linked to my physical card account in order to make online payments, and that's to anyone, not just Royal.

I also had an issue when I sailed on Odyssey last May. I had set up my onboard account using my physical credit card number and then when Guest Services processed the initial hold electronically at the start of the cruise it was refused. I had to go there with another card which strangely worked even though it was linked to the same account. The problem was aggravated by the fact that they had no physical payment terminals that you could enter a PIN into as that would have resolved the onboard issue immediately.

Another possible work-around might be if you have access to international accounts such as Wise or Revolut? I don't know if you have those or similar in Iceland? I use Wise and although it's not 100% ideal (what ever is?) because it's a debit card rather than a credit card, it lets me hold money in various currencies and make payments in whichever of them is most appropriate.

To be honest, I don't know if any of the above will actually help you but just throwing it out there in case it does.

I am seeing the same.  I have 4 cruises booked.  2 are paid in full.  The other 2 I only paid the deposit.
When I log into my account to try to pay the remaining balance(s), it tells me there is "No Balance Due."

Thanks Cedric.  I was on the chat with RCCL and they sent me that link as well.

But I'm curious as to why the main site doesn't work?  When you log in and it lists all your upcoming cruises, there used to be a button there that would allow you to Pay Remaining Balance.  Now, it just says that I "Have no remaining balance due" even though I WISH that were the case!!

Wow @Olafur - that sounds really frustrating! There are a lot of people from the UK and EU who cruise so hopefully someone else has experience with this. Are you trying to book a new cruise or make payment(s) on an already-booked cruise? Are you able to use a travel agent?

Was just the final payment, all worked fine in November last year, but now it´s blocked.

Thanks for this, EEA follows the same regulation framework, so we are affected as rest of the EU.

The way I solved this was similar to the approach you talk about by using Revolut, creating a virtual card and paying that way not ideal. I´ve used now 5 different banks that all come with the same refusal because of the 3DS, but then I see based on another response that France banks/cards dont seam to be affected.

More worried if the ships use internet payments at the ship once we board (looks to be the case based on what you said), as then we will have the same issue. There are zero to none answer from RCI when I raise this so does not spark any confidence in their ability to solve this. Not sure what is going on in their backend but does not look to be that they have implemented the 3DS standards as they should have or partially done that for some areas/countries.

My trip is in end of July so was curious if other people are having this issue and have any updated on the matter as I cant get that answer from RCI.
