cobra614
Just booked our second cruise ever. First one was booked by family members of ours and we just paid them, this one is on Harmony next May in a JS. I was quoted a price of $288 thru our TA who said it was RC's coverage. Is this a fair deal? Total cost of cruise was $3500 after casino royale discounts.

SpeedNoodles
Shop around. Know exactly what you want out of insurance (just trip cancellation? Trip interruption? I need "cancel for work reasons". Med evac?) Check out Matt's podcast, just released yesterday: https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/podcast/episode-315-travel-insurance-101 Ala_Paul
Momof4crazytocruise
We shop around. Because we primarily cruise without flying to the port, airfare and luggages cost recovery are not as important to us as say, medical coverage and medical evacuations, etc. I have found very reasonably priced travel insurance just by shopping around. (For example, for my upcoming 5 night cruise, I paid $58 for the both of us for pretty good coverage. For or Feb cruise where all the kiddies are coming, I went with a different company with better medical coverage and paid $88 for all 6 of us). melski94
We use a 3rd party. There are advantages and disadvantages to each so the biggest thing is to know what you want from trip insurance. RC insurance is expensive but will give you a credit if you can't make the cruise. We use CT Travel Insured through USAA but have also looked at insuremytrip.com which compares several plans. I recently had a claim so would recommend them just for the ease of the claim. Travel insurance is mostly influenced by your age and the $$ value of all covered expenses. We have used Royal and two other insurance companies, including Allianz. You need to determine what you want to cover. Medical insurance/evacuation, etc., for Royal isn't very good, at least for the bare bones policy you get. But they have other benefits, like lost luggage and trip cancellation. Royal's trip cancellation is more flexible than most private carriers. So we use Royal when it is a "simple" trip, like a 7 Night from Florida where we drive and park. For overseas, expensive trips, we have used Allianz, which offers superior medical coverage (multiple levels of coverage). I found Royal competitive for what it offered, but there are companies that specialize in medical coverage for vacations, so you can really shop around. The only claims we have ever had involved luggage -- either lost or delayed. Now some places you might visit overseas have minimum health insurance coverage for your "visa", e.g., New Caledonia. One needs to make sure that the travel insurance you purchase for such a trip meets visa requirements for the visited countries. Bottom line, I doubt you were overcharged, but never feel Royal is the best or only solution. It really depends upon what you think you need. Younger folks seem less interested in medical coverage....
Weezie57
Might check with your credit card company. I have the Chase Safire Preferred card and since I used it to pay for the cruise they provide travel insurance to cover the same things third party carriers do. I went through USAA a couple of years ago for travel insurance on a Disney Cruise and they easily beat the cost of the insurance provided by the cruise line. KJones
for our upcoming cruise on Harmony, we bought insurance with Allianz through AAA. The policy was $190 for the two of us (based on travel costs of $3200) and has significantly better medical/evac coverage, and slightly better luggage/ other travel protections, than what was offered by Royal. WAAAYTOOO
Back when we were purchasing individual cruise insurance we always went with USAA. For the past few years we have been purchasing an annual policy with Allianz. Since we have never made an insurance claim I have no idea if one is better than the other ! We do a lot of business with USAA and I would have purchased an annual policy with them if they offered one, but they do not.
