  1. Hi, was just wondering what folks' preference when it comes to dining time are. We are currently signed up for 8:30 seating, which is fine, as I think it gives us time to leisurely come back from port and change, and also watch some of the earlier shows. We're debating between 8:30 and 6 pm, because if we do 6 pm seating, then I can go do WJ afterwards for more desserts lol. I hear they have awesome dessert spread every night. But I'm concerned that port visits will feel rushed if we do that. What about MTD, what are the pros and cons of doing so?
  2. I tried searching but couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I have read somewhere that MDR is open for breakfast, and that it's also open seating. 1. Is it buffer, or is it served? 2. Is the food same as WJ offering, or is there a different menu? 3. What's the dresscode for breakfast at the MDR? Does it have a "high end breakfast vibe" and therefore you should dress up a bit, or people just show up in whatever (shorts and t-shirts)? 4. For you personally, what would make you eat breakfast in the MDR, versus WJ, versus room service (provided that you're only ordering the free items)? Does it differ between port days and sea days? TIA

  4. I'm sailing on Allure in April. I requested a table near the window and now have the number. Is there a MDR layout available with table numbering so I could see where it is? I would like to make sure it's not right on top of a serving station.
  5. Just returned from 7 day Liberty from Galveston and wanted to comment on the food. My family of 4 (Wife, 16 year old boy and girl) did the 5 day dining plan and went to Chops 3 nights and Giovanni's 2 nights. MDR 2 nights Awesome: Chops - our waiter Jiri was just outstanding. We went to Chops the 1st night of the cruise and his service was impeccable. We requested him on our 2 other visits and he was a shining star! The food was excellent! from the salads right to the deserts. on the last formal night (lobster night) they made sure to let us know ahead of time that they would have lobster tails which made for an awesome surf and turf. It's been a few years since we cruised and the lobster tails used to be rock lobster. This time around they were Maine lobster tails. We are from New England and eat a lot of fresh lobster so we may be a bit picky. These tails were frozen which I would expect but they were still very good! Giovanni's - Service was again excellent. Food was very good. We visited on the 2nd night of the cruise and the waiter pretty much brought us everything on the menu including appetizers and main pasta dishes. there was so much food on the table that we couldn't come close to finishing. We ended up not touching the eggplant parm and had them box it up to go for our cabin fridge. The only thing they cold improve on is the deserts...taramisu was mediocre and cannoli were soggy. Not really a biggie because we ate so much there wasn't room for desert! Mediocre: MDR - went for breakfast the 1st morning because my wife and I always like to get the eggs benedict...they were both cold, overcooked, and had just a dribble of hollandaise which had no taste. Kids got pancakes with bacon and sausage which turned out to be the same quality as Wind Jammer buffet (just plain bad). Bacon is like beef Jerky and almost unedible...sausage is as low quality as you can get....no casing and mushy! lunch was good and we only went to lunch in MDR on sea days because of the salad buffet. Dinner was a bit better but lowest quality of any cruise I have been on (Disney, Princess, and multiple RCR). One annoying service issue was the waiters trying to sell us a bottle of wine on both nights even after telling them we had the drink package (glasses of wine included). Both of our waiters were incredulous that we wouldn't buy a bottle of wine at 40% off instead of ordering single glasses of wine. Why would I spend additional $$ on a bottle of wine when I can order the same wine by the glass which is included in my drink package. just strange. Plain BAD!!!!!!!!: Wind Jammer: This was by far the worst buffet dining experience I have ever had on a cruise ship. Barely edible items up and down the buffet line for breakfast and lunch. The ONLY thing I can recommend here is the egg/omlette station for breakfast. get your eggs cooked the way you want...grab some toast and get the heck out! "Sliced beef" carving station at lunch looked like pork...never seen sliced beef that was white in color...i passed. Burgers are hockey pucks. pasta...how do you screw up pasta!? Johnny Rockets: they didn't cook the burgers in front of you on the grill. they were same quality as the buffet hockey pucks and were just pre-cooked low quality burgers. It took 45 minutes to get our burgers AFTER we had cheese fry appetizer! We were there for 90 minutes one day just for burgers/fries and almost got up and left. This was really a disappointment as we have been to Johnny Rockets before and were expecting a decent burger....not Wind Jammer quality pucks. NOT WORTH THE UPCHARGE! Bottom line is that I am very happy we purchased the 5 night dinner package. If you want good quality food this is the only way to go. I had heard that food quality had gone down but was very surprised at how bad Wind Jammer quality was. I expect typical mediocre quality for mass produced food items in a buffet but this was close to unacceptable.
  6. Do they offer steak every night in the main dining room? Im a bit of a Steak man lol Also how do i do my time for dining room? Also how is the lunch in main dining room?
  7. Hi all These are probably very stupid questions to many of you so laugh if you must! If there is a link to a previous/existing topic please share. Looking at the Ovation deck plan, I can see what appear to be 4 large dining rooms (Silk, American Icon, Grande and Chic). I have found Youtube videos for each so my understanding is these are the MDRs. Please tell me if I am wrong! The questions... 1 - Do you get allocated one of these as your MDR for duration of the cruise or can you choose? 2 - Can you change your choice each night? 3 - Does the formal night apply to all 4 on the same nights? 4 - I assume the My Time Dining is only for these restaurants? If so, my cruise planner does not let me choose which one it just gives me a time slot? Is this purely because I am still a few months before the cruise? Thanks "Stupid" Barrie
  8. My husband and I are going on our very first cruise ever to celebrate our 5 yr anniversary in September. We'll be on the 3 night itinerary on Enchantment of the Seas. Day 1/Night 1 is our actual anniversary - is it a good idea to dine (and splurge a bit) at Chops or should we dine in MDR?
  9. We are cruising to Cuba next month. Since Empress is a tiny little lady we've been reading as much as possible from other folks who have sailed on her recently. Question. I saw on the RCI website that Empress offers "free Sunday brunch" everyday? Where is this onboard each day? Also, it stated that breakfast, lunch, and dinner was complimentary/free in the MDR? Is that true? See below: Enjoy complimentary multi-course dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Main Dining room. Choose to dine in our pre-determined seating or at your own time. Sunday Brunch every day with a complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary.

I'm currently booked for the early time slot (5:30 PM), which means that on most shore days my dining time is going to be before the ship is leaving port (6 PM departure from St. Kitts, 5 PM from St. Maarten, 9 PM from San Juan, and 5 PM from Labadee). How does the ship's departure time compare to when we actually need to be back on the ship ("all aboard" time)? Will I typically be back early enough that making it to the 5:30 dinner won't generally be an issue? I remember someone on another thread I posted saying that with a 5:30 time slot, I'd actually need to be on line around 5:00, so I assume that means I'd want to be back on board by 4 to have enough time for everyone to shower, change for dinner, and walk to the MDR. The only day I'm thinking this will be an issue is when we're in San Juan, since that day is from 3 to 9. I kind of figured we'd just find a nice local place for dinner that day and sample the local cuisine. But the other days, I'd prefer to have dinner in the MDR since we arrive at the islands early and I think can still get in a pretty full day. My wife isn't terribly interested in the specialty restaurants, and I saw the advice here for first-time cruisers to not worry about it anyway, so I was just figuring that at most we'd have lunch in Giovanni's Table one day, and lunch at Sabor one other day. Saves us money doing lunch instead of dinner, while letting us still sample the restaurants. The other thing related to this is the experience of actually watching from the deck as the ship departs and seeing the island slowly disappearing from view. We'd obviously miss that by sticking to our dining time, since from what I saw the MDR has no windows, but is it a big deal? Apart from getting a few photographs of the islands, it doesn't seem like there's really a need to do that. Again, San Juan would be the exception; but I see it being a better thing there, because it would be full night time and all the city lights would be on for a more interesting view.
  11. As I understand it, they offer different 'themes' in the MDR. My questions are: 1) Is every night a different 'theme'? 2) What themes can I expect on a 14 night Med Navigator cruise? Will they 'recycle' themes ie Italian nights on both weeks. I LOVE food and I'm trying to decide if/how much specialty dining to book but I don't want to miss anything tasty that I don't have to pay extra for! TIA
  12. Morning guys and gals! Cin and I traveled BOTS Jan 7-11, 2016. Wonderful "first" time cruise. We traveled with 10 other guests, all with "my time dining". When we all arrived at the MDR, we were asked if we would like to sit together. Reply was yes, if possible. Within 4 minutes, we were escorted to the far back corner of the upper level MDR (they knew we were trouble, lol). When we got to the table, it was only set for 10 guests. 2 of our party offered to sit close by, but there was no way the head waiter was going to allow that. She said, NO! and in less than a minute there was another table added and room for 12. It gets better.... Our Waiter, and assistant, were 2nd to none. I know these guys work for tips, but, they were sincerely "interested" in our group, and wanted to please. They also showed a sense of pride in and about what they were doing. Not deadbeat "here we go again" type of service. Two of our guests were young boys, 10 and 15. The boys had their food even before the adults order was taken. Amazing! The boys were able to ask for something NOT on the menu, and were not disappointed. They soon after went to the teen area of the ship, leaving the remaining time/dinner for adults. We love the kids, even though they are well behaved boys, surely they enjoyed NOT having to sit with 10 adults for over an hour. It's the little things the staff do, and did, that make a venue "special". Order taken. Grilled asparagus was awesome was offered as a side veggie. A couple of our people mentioned how pleased they were to the head waiter during her walk-around. Others in our group chimed in (it was awesome veggie). She smiled and said, "you all like it"?, "I'll make sure you all have Asparagus, for the group, tomorrow with dinner". Go Figure...talk about a happy crowd. Yes, the next evening, Asparagus "magically" appeared on 2 separate large plates as a veggie to be shared by the table. And, yes, every night thereafter. Yes, it was just as good as the first night. Now, to the nitty-gritty....The Food! Between the group, we had pretty much everything available on the menu. Starting with fresh baked assortment of dinner rolls....Pork, Duck, Fish beef and more. Homemade mashed potato's. What more could one ask for? lol. Everything was excellent, no complaints, and many empty plates. Our Waiter actually "built" a dinner for Cindy, when she was having trouble deciding, taking the best from different dinners. Cheese topped escargot was a surprise. I didn't ask to see if it was available without, but, sent back an empty plate. Deserts were enjoyed by all. The quality of the food made me think "why would anybody want to go to one of the other pay venues"...it was really that good. Cin and I will most likely have to try "chops" on the next cruise just to compare, but we don't see how it could be $70 better, really! Our waiter and assistant, both, had all of our names memorized AND what we drink, by the 2nd night. Unbelievable when you think of the number of people they work with during a 4 night cruise. The entire wait staff was smiling! Not only when around the tables...they honestly looked "happy" with their jobs.....I notice little things like that. There was a "stout" Black Man, bald, suit and tie, walking around that seemed un-interested in answers after asking how we were doing....every night within about 10 seconds of arriving to our table, he pulled his cell phone from his jacket as if answering a call, never received our responses, and walked away as if something more important was going on. It got to be a joke around the table. The last night he showed up, I picked up my cell phone and loudly said "yes, he's here".....looked at him, and said, "Grab your cell phone...you're fixing to get a call...." The whole table cracked up, and so did he.....then he walked away, like the other nights...We didn't need him anyways. lol The staff was doing a great job. We were NOT a rowdy group, 5 of us are over 60 and the entire group was well behaved. The group did not feel "rushed" in order to turn the table. Cin and I visited Windjammer for Breakfast and Lunch. Next cruise we'll try MDR for those when we can. Windjammer, after the 2nd or third meal, becomes blah, with the same "type" menu/buffet repeated. Maybe not the same exact food Items, but buffet food. We found that "filling", but nothing remarkable. To be noted: we found, by mistake, in the back of the ship where the bingo is played, a bar/lounge. In the late afternoon/evening there was a hot finger food bar there. I peeked... large fried coconut shrimp, cheese sticks and other warm items. I was surprised at the size of the shrimp. They sure "didn't scrimp on the shrimp". I found later they are the dinner size shrimp served in the MDR. It wasn't advertised, so keep an eye open for it, or ask...it was late afternoon. I didn't want to spoil dinner so I held off. lol Over all, we give the MDR an A++ for our experience. Over and above our expectations. Cin wants to go FOTS next.....the MDR will have a high standard to meet, much less beat.
  13. Hi Friends. Seems like I know some of you guys. Newbie here. First Cruise Jan 7th out of Tampa to see if the better half can handle the movement of the boat. I truely hope she can as we would like to take a longer voyage. (she already has her 'patches'). I've done some homework, but cannot find Menu's for Briliance 2016. Particularly our Jan. 7th-11th timeframe. Is there someplace I'm overlooking to find the MDR Menu's for that trip? Really appreciate all the good info you all come up with. I'd like to think that "one day", I'll have the experience to help answer some of these newbie type questions I keep coming up with. Can you tell I'm just a "little bit" excited about our first trip?   14. We dont like dress up during our vacations so we are skipping the MDR on formal nights. Is it an option to visit one of the specialty restaurants on those nights? What is the dress code for those restaurants? What is acceptable; collared shirt (oxford) and polo shirts, khakis or slacks? We will be cruising on the Jewel of the Seas. Thank you for your help.
  15. My wife always gets annoyed when she sees people in MDR wearing shorts. Does it bother anyone else?
