I just went to the Royal app and see what you are saying with Quantum being for 2020.  Yes! I don’t blame them for moving out of Asia for the time-being either... I would think getting this planned logistically so close would be tough. Port schedules etc.   maybe some good pricing will come of the short notice for cruisers...While Royal will certainly take a hit financially with these changes... some awesome intro/last minUte pricing may be exactly what they need to get locals out in this west coast market introduced to the cruise line...Carnival is so popular out here.. blah.

Could be doing first responders but like when Empress and Majesty lost Cuba they sold those ships at ridiculously low rates and offered a lot of casino comps to fill the ships.  There was no single supplement and I added 6 cruises to my resume as a result.
Better to minimize losses and cover some operating costs such as crew costs through daily gratuity charges plus a good way to shake up the west coast cruise industry with a cold weather ship in a colder ocean in the spring.  Quantum class is a good fit for CA cruising in the spring.  I also think people spend more on board when they get a bargain on the cruise fare.  Why not splurge on a beverage package or dining when the cruise cost so little?

5000 passengers....obviously referring to an Oasis Class ship. Would be nice...but no other ports on the West Coast or Mexican Riviera can handle that size. So unless Royal is working with the Port as well as other ports down the line...there would be tendering galore at every destination, if something like this comes to fruition.

    Neitherless, would be nice.....

I think it's needed to stay competitive. I remember Carnival looked at doing this back around 2010 but nothing came of it.

Totally agree! So jealous of those folks who are able to take an uber down to the port for a weekend getaway cruise

Well this is exciting. Gives me a closer option for my cruisin addiction. I think a 4 day cruise will go nicely with 3 days at disney/universal

Royal would do wonders with a private island(natural or man-made) or private resort on the Mexican Riviera

Would love to also see Royal be creative with their itineraries. A person can only go to the same ports so many times.

Me too. I think 3 and 4 nights is a little short for me. But maybe they have to test the waters and see if it’s profitable first.

GlowTheWeird reacted to KWofPerth in Ovation passengers caught up in volcanic eruption
Passengers from Ovation of the Seas are among the injured and missing people, and at least one person has died, after a volcano erupted on New Zealand's Whakaari (White Island).
Initial reports suggested 100 visitors were on or near the island at the time of the eruption, but police have since halved the estimate as some of those people have been transported to shore, according to an report in the NZ Herald.
Tourism Bay of Plenty spokeswoman said a helicopter and a tour boat have still not been accounted for, the article states.
The eruption occurred on Monday afternoon around 2.15pm, with several rescue helicopters attending. An emergency operation centre has also been set up at Whakatane Hospital to work alongside Civil Defence.
Royal Caribbean's 4,905-passenger Ovation of the Seas docked at the nearby Port of Tauranga this morning and it is understood that many of the missing tourists were from the ship, visiting White Island on a tour boat. Ovation of the Seas was due to depart this evening but instead will stay in Tauranga tonight.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Cruise Critic: “We can confirm that a number of our guests were touring the island today. We do not have any additional details to share at this time. Ovation of the Seas will remain overnight until we learn more about the situation. We will offer all possible assistance to our guests and local authorities. Please keep all those affected in your prayers.”
New Zealand Cruise Association released a statement that it is "very concerned" about the welfare of the cruisers.
“Our primary concern right now is with the wellbeing of the passengers and all those involved. We would like to extend our heartfelt concern to the passengers and their families,” NZCA Chief Executive Officer Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Our hope is that everyone will be recovered quickly and unharmed, but at this time we have no further information.”

Not sure if you can turn it in and pick it up later, but you could drag it back to your chair and leave it there. I would think (or at least hope) no one would take it.
