  1. Thanks for letting me know and calming me a bit @mworkman @tdcackler and @twangster.  I am more visual so thanks for that!

I did get an email from someone at RCLsaying it has been set up but no instructions on how to access it or ref number.  It was just a one liner saying it was set up.  I wish there was a way to login and see it on your profile.  I will give them a call next week or so and keep it posted. I booked it through RCL online. Thanks again for the help.

  2. I have been emailing and phoning back and forth over a cancelled cruise and finally got a dollar amount in credits promised. I have been wondering how and when this will happen.

When I log in to RC there is no wallet or account place like with airlines where you can see credits.

What is your experience?  Is it a voucher?  It has been a few weeks now.

How long should I wait before I escalate? (ha... that rhymes)

    Cheers

Mark throughout he's content he always states that boarding times are only suggestions.  But I've come across a recent Australian video regarding the Ovation of the Seas.  It's stated that people were being turned away if digressing from their boarding times.

Can any of the Australian people here please comment on their experiences boarding in Sydney.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9173c3JCes

It seems the people in the video arrive at a really busy time. It looked like it was raining before they arrived and then cleared up so I infer that everyone just hopped in time around the time the rain stopped.  I wonder if they started to turn people away just for crowd control purposes. I am sure that they would let you on if it weren't too massive a line up. It seems 1130 was busy. I will be Ovation out of SYD in October and will let you know....I plan on being there at 10-1030. Hopefully someone else will chime in like Pippa.  BTW...I am inferring that you mean Matt and not Mark?

  4. I emailed them for traditional dining and they replied 90 days before my sailing I should email back. I guess it depends on your sailing.

It seems that any 2 table top is only 2 inches away from another 2 person table.

I guess so they can push them together if they need a 4 top. I am hoping it won't be so crowded during my sitting.

For my Ovation cruise in May it became available briefly just over 30 days out.  It booked up quickly and I rarely saw it available in advance again.  Like North Star you can usually get a reservation upon boarding but do so quickly as everyone else will be trying to secure a reservation upon boarding as well.

I am just over 100 days out for Ovation and reservations for fly and northstar showed up last week! I booked it up!

Not sure if anyone familiar with Freedom can tell from these screen captures from the news report showing the start of the investigation exactly where this is on the ship. It looks like there are a few windows open...

Bottom line, only after an adult lifts a child that high (estimating 4 feet or so above the deck) in the air could they possibly fall out. Unless you have extremely poor eyesight and cannot feel a breeze it's blatantly obvious when a window is open. Why would you even think of placing a child up against a glass/plexiglass pane in the first place? How is that cute or funny? You can also see all of the tables and chairs right behind the investigators...

When we were in the Solarium on Allure, I immediately noticed the open windows (I recall they were higher of course) that they opened for circulation. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to notice them.

Just to be clear, are the windows talked about at chest level of this guy or the one where his legs are?  It looks like the windows where the guys legs are can slide open given the panel in the middle.  Can anyone that has been on the ship verify if these slide open too?

  7. Marvelous photos. I love the whole report that others tend to leave out...i.e. transit in YVR, check in, airplanes (love your pics of the airplane! avgeek here)etc.

I just watched a couple of videos on youtube onboard Ovation going under the Lions Gate into YVR and it looked so close...it was cool to see from your perspective.

My questions are: On one of the videos I saw of Ovation departing YVR was that there were people on the bow the of the ship where people had said previously there wasn't access. Are they letting people go there now?

Also, have you been able to access via deck 13 to on top of the bridge or has it been to crowded? Is it easy to get to?

I am going on Ovation when it goes back down to Sydney. They usually have kettles in the room for tea and coffee. Have they taken them out for Alaska?

Finally, What are the selections for food like in the Solarium and Windjammer. There aren't any really good pictures or videos on youtube or else where.

Cheers and sorry for the many inquiries...I have been on an Alaskan cruise many moons ago and looking forward to seeing the many pictures of Sitka and others to see how they have changed...especially to compare how much some glaciers remain..they were constantly calving when I was there 15 years or so.

    Pre Cruise Day ?

Travelled from Brisbane to Sydney by plane. 1 1/2 hour trip. Went by train from the airport to the hotel.

If you ever get on a cruise in Sydney, the Holiday Inn Old Sydney is a great place to stay. Close to the port, the city  and  a very comfortable sleep.

We were upgraded to a Harbour View room, so got a view of Ovation coming into the port this morning.

We booked this hotel too before our cruise On Ovation in October! Glad to know it is comfortable and close! Hopefully you update soon and everything went well. Is this how long was your cruise? is it around New Zealand? I am guessing 12/13 days since you are posting?  Also, is this the group cruise with Pippa? or is that next year

Well  I found an answer to my query by visiting a TA.  There are heaps of rooms available, so yeah, the website was the issue.

Also, I didn't realise this, but all interior rooms on Quantum OTS have a virtual balcony.  Not sure if this is common across Quantum Class. Anyone know?

Yeah, I just found this out as well. I went to book on Ovation but the room and deck I wanted only had one available. I booked just to secure it then called in and they had the room I wanted. Website wasn't showing it. Happy sailing!

  10. Yay! So I booked my first EVER cruise! I am booked on a 12 day Ovation of the Seas from Sydney around New Zealand! The itineraries were released this past week.

Thanks to the many people who have posted on these forums as I have lurked and learned from you all! I chose Ovation and leaned toward RCL because of these boards and Ovation was the newest ship in the area (though I think Princess Majestic might be newer).  As an aviation geek I can definitely tell the difference between plane types but, I didn't know much about cruising and ships but these forums helped heaps and I am still learning!

So I wanted to share a perspective from a Noob when booking a new cruise and hope to share my experience cruising in the future!

    1. Negative reviews: There are bound to be some rough currents; meaning, there are ALWAYS going to be whiners and grumps that complain about everything so take these with a grain of salt
    2. Positive reviews: There are going to be some over the top fabulousness reviews where everything was awesome...can everything REALLy be THAT awesome...also take these with a grain of salt.
    3. Research what cabin you want BEFORE bookings come out. I knew what cabin I wanted based on what was above, below, to the sides and even based on foot traffic and those whited out areas (which I avoided). I booked a forward balcony and it was only 200 more on the TOTAL, not per night. UNFORTUNATELY, the cabin I wanted wasn't showing up online. I wanted deck 9 and there was only one for the whole deck 9 and sailings were just released! I wanted starboard side but had to choose the only deck 9 cabin on the port! (more on this below)
    4. BOOK EARLY! I am not using an agent as I like to be in control. I booked via rcl.com
    5. Gratuities: for our 12 night cruise gratuities were added on by my choice just before payment and were clearly stated if you wanted to pay now or later. I opted to pay now and just pay the minimum deposit. Gratuities were $222 per person.  On the same page it asks for traditional dining which gave the choice of 1730 or 2000. We chose 1730 because we also want to have time to go to the buffet later at night, oink!  There was an option for my time dining but seems too much hassle for our first cruise.
    6. Keep up on Sales! So the day AFTER we booked our cruise RCL started a new promotion and of course got an email. I took the advice from many on here and did a dummy booking to see if it was cheaper and sure enough it was $256 CHEAPER! I did what Matt and you guys said to do and called up on my lunch break and with no waiting the girl on the phone said yes it is cheaper and she changed it for free! YAY! BUT WAIT....I wanted a specific cabin and asked politely if it were available because it wasn't showing on the website. She said is was available and saw it was the same price category and SCORE! We were now on the starboard side!
    7. EMAIL DINING: I emailed dining about a 2 topper. (like the lingo?) They replied and said that things were loaded about 50 days before sailing! So I will request again later.

Thanks again for all info on these forums. No question (no matter how many times I saw asked) went unanswered.

    Cheers!

  11. I am looking to book Ovation in November. I just have to make a few arrangements before I book but i see that the price isn't so bad! How long before they go up and will there be a huge price difference? I see they have the sale on now, but will they have it on again or a similar prince again? I have to make a few arrangements with other things before I book.

Right now it looks like Nov 19 is about 4500 for 2 for a 12 day cruise to NZ! Aarrrggh...so frustrated I can't book now!

Now when the deployment for the Caribbean is official, I can't stop thinking what RCI's plan for Jewel is. As for today, the last official sail with her is a late TA sailing to PR. Explorer seems to take her place in Miami with South Caribbean cruises, so it would be strange to let her return to Miami.

My hope is that they reposition her to somewhere else then the Caribbean, like the West coast or maybe Dubai:12_slight_smile:

What is your thoughts about Jewel?

I just read on here (somewhere) Jewel was going to the Panama Canal then Bahrain...I will link it if I find it again..hope that helps

I am not sure if Ovation is coming back to Australia / New Zealand in the 2nd half of 2019 as it maybe replaced by Spectrum. All should become clearer next week when the Australian season is released. China will not be released until June.

I can't wait until next week for the rest of 2019! I am kind of hoping Spectrum will be on the Aus/NZ cruise I want....but I would be happy with Ovation :14_relaxed:

It could be something to do with the system. They most likely are only putting a note that may get missed. If you are doing My Time Dining then it would be easier to get a table for 2 as they would have more available. If you are wanting it so you have the same waiter you can ask to have the same waiter each time. I would assume the table for 2 in the traditional dining room will be assigned on a first come first serve basis.

We did MTD, made reservations before hand, and got the table for two by the window with the same wait staff throughout.

newbie here so just making sure--So are you saying that is easier to get a 2 person table if you do MTD? (looking for Ovation)

Overall, what I am getting is:

    • email rcldining@rccl.com 2-3 weeks before and confirm
    • call ahead of cruise and confirm
    • go to main dining room as soon as you board and confirm

What if you are just a lonely newbie that just signed up for C&A? Do you still get the perks of requesting  a 2 person table?
