Cruising out of New Orleans

You should always expect the unexpected.  Regardless of weather, what are your plans if you miss the 1pm flight?  Do you have refundable airfare or are you willing to pay the change fees?  Do you have travel insurance that covers this?

New Orleans is similar to Galveston.  New Orleans can have rough seas and a rocky ride entering and leaving the port, but rarely is there a big weather event that can cause significant delays, but it has happened.  Personally, I usually buy refundable airfare and schedule my return flight late in the afternoon or the next day to account for unexpected delays.  I can always try standby if I want to get home sooner.  I also have travel insurance via my credit card that will cover me if I find myself stranded because of a weather or medical emergency.

Good luck and have a blast on your trip.

I have never experienced delays coming in but it's always good to have a contingency plan and travel insurance certainly helps. The trip along the river takes some time so you will be in sight of land long before you make it into port. Means you will have cell service and sometimes the casino closes early on the last night.

I'm looking forward to sailing out of New Orleans next year. Though it's December, so I won't see much of the river transit since it'll get dark so early.

It takes a considerable amount of time to get to the Gulf of Mexico. If the boat leaves at 4pm I think it will be past 10 or 11 when the ship gets to some open water. You'll certainly pass some barge traffic along the way.

Shortly after leaving NOLA you'll pass a Domino sugar factory on the port side, I always think to myself 'Wow, this facility is there just to service Cafe du Monde.'

Booked for NOLA next year January with my daughter.  That leaves only Tampa that I’ve not scheduled or been to for as a US departure.  I will however be ending a sailing there so at least I get to see it.
can’t wait to see NOLA again, it’s been 10 years since I visited.

How is the port? Ease of entry etc.

I’m thinking of booking in the business/warehouse  district which puts me a good walk away from the “nonsense”.  Last time I stayed on Poydras St at Hampton Suites-loved it but they are full.

Saving the two best North American ports till last, huh? New Orleans has oodles and oodles of solid hotel choices but I gotta tell ya' the Hilton New Orleans Riverside is my favorite for a pre cruise hotel. Like the Pan Pacific in Vancouver, staying at this location you don't even walk outside on embarkation morning. NOLA is my pick for the best cruise port in North America.

I'm doing a B2B2B in January--because I wanted extra helpings of "nonsense".

The convention center hotels are pretty easy access to the cruise port, walking distance if you can handle luggage. I find walking is easier than getting a ride to the port if possible.  There's a trolley stop in front of the port that will take you down into the Quarter easily enough if you want to spend time there.
