stevendom57
Way back in prehistoric times I took high school Spanish. Of course, being in Texas, I learned the Mexican dialect of the language. In about a year I will be on a TA from Rome to FLL with a few stops in Spain. Will the 20 or so phrases that I remember of my high school Spanish suffice in Spain or will they just shake their heads at me?
KristiZ
You'll be fine -- they'll understand you (even if they think you sound like a yokel). But you may struggle to understand them, depending on where in Spain! Most of the touristy port cities there will be English speakers, picture menus, signs in multiple languages, stuff like that. Enjoy!
FionaMG
They will pleased that you're making the effort. And since your cruise is still a year away you have time to brush up on those 20 or so phrases and maybe learn 20 or so more. HeWhoWaits
For your understanding of what they say to you, be aware of some key differences in how certain letters are enunciated. In the Spanish we learn in the US, Barcelona is pronounced as Bar-suh-lo-nuh. Locally it is pronounced Bar-thuh-lo-nuh.
AlmondFarmer
“Otra cerveza por favor” will work in Spain or Mexico. WAAAYTOOO

"Mas cerveza por favor" would be better - you want more beer, not necessarily a different one. stevendom57, emmef and WAAAYTOOO 2
stevendom57
Thanks for the info. I will brush up on my Mexican Spanish and hope for the best. I didn't learn "Mas cerveza por favor" in high school but I will add it to my vocabulary. KristiZ and WAAAYTOOO 1

Otro/Otra means another or other. Mas means more. Bartender will understand either. “Cerveza hasta que dormiendo” will also work.
