I agree with the others: Each planned Periscope Broadcast should be posted as a single thread with a Title Format of "Ship Name - Sail Date" or similar (but standardized).  I recently added my next planned scope under the existing thread, "periscope peeps" . One concern is that readers have to sort through and read all posts in the thread to find the various planned scopes.  [btw, follow me on periscope @Rich_Triplett to watch my upcoming sailings]

Agreed. Since we have a forum, makes sense to create a new thread for each person's planned Periscope

I'd vote for one forum with a number of threads.  And ideally each would be entitled with the ship name and sailing date, that way if I was interested in a specific sailing it would be easier to find...

    Love the idea, Kat.

Question for everyone: what is more useful: One forum with a number of forum threads for each person who is going to be broadcasting or a curated single thread (similar to the When is your next cruise thread)?

    Hello friends!

I really like the idea as well of a forum with a number of threads. I just started using Periscope a couple of weeks ago so definitely love the idea of this as it would definitely let everyone know when your periscopes will be happening.

My first ever post on here and now time for bed. See you all tomorrow! :)

    Welcome Hayley
This is a great forum to find out who is periscoping, from where. and Matt periscopes everyday sometime usually between the hours of four and nine. When you are following someone, it will notify you when they come on to periscope.

Yes good idea Matt.I think I reported some scopes that I learned about under a existing thread in the Periscope forum on main page. From now on I will create a new thread in that same forum, if I find out someone's going to scope, if they have not posted already to notify, just to help people find the scopes easier.

Your question was brought was brought up when I was on a behind the scenes tour of the Allure recently.

Here is the answer to your question according to Captain Johnny on the Allure:

The Allure will always pull up to the dock with the starboard side facing the dock.  The reason for this is that the escalators used when in port are only located on the starboard side.  So whenever the Allure comes into port she will spin 360 degrees and back into the dock with her starboard side against the pier.

When I observe port cams, I haven't picked up any patterns other than those mentioned above. I assume docking side is determined between the captain and the harbormaster or pilot based upon the number of ships in port, the time it takes to turn around in the turning basin, and whether the crew needs to perform maintenance on one side or another. I was transfixed last year on the dock at Nassau when two crew members were removing stains (looked like rust, but I think it was just dirty water stains) from hull with a giant squirt gun while standing on the dock. I assume they were using some sort of bleach solution or anti-oxidizing agent. So, I don' t think there is any way to predict whether a ship will be docked on the port or starboard side other than asking an officer while on board.

You will love it no mater what side the ship docks on.  I actually prefer the serenity of not facing the dock.  For example, in St. Thomas if you are facing the dock...yea for a while it is fun to watch everyone getting off the ship but you are also starring at building rooftops. On the other side you have an amazing view of Charlotte Amalie and a much better distant view of the Island.  Its really is a win, win and I am willing to bet you will see both happen while on your trip.

Sorry to hear about your experience.  This is a fan blog, so please don't expect a reply here from virtue of this post.

Reading your post, it sounded like you were disappointed your original sailing(s) on Empress were cancelled, which I can certainly understand.  No one wants that to happen to them, but on the other hand, I also wouldn't have wanted RC to go ahead and put out a half-finished ship.

The ships dock on both sides, so no way to really tell. Also depending upon winds, tide, and other ships in port the same ship could change sides within the same port from trip to trip. If on a finger dock you will still see everything. If on a flat pier to the land again you will see see around the port. I believe maybe you are overthinking at this point. Just take the cruise and have fun.

Yes, 🙂 That is the point I was trying to make. This is a very Awesome site, and a very good resource for those who enjoy cruising, and are addicted to cruising, like myself. (I like doing research for my Cruises), being more accessible on main page. I think would also promote, more people to post as well, when they are Pericoping, or to share information, if they know of someone that is Pericoping from a certain ship or area, like Billy scoping the ships pulling out of Port Everglades.(That was Great to watch)

I agree with DocLC comments about this. I would add the following it is very costly to set up and maintain a embarkation / disembarkation port. At this time the only ports they use for this are Vancouver & Seattle. It is not only the port fees but the ground personnel, supply of goods (Food, supplies, etc). I do not believe Royal wants to comment the resources as the same resources in other markets could have a higher return.

If the start a cruise from Seattle they need to go to a International port on the cruise. Going to Mexico is is really to far, and North is Alaska. So in order to really move into the market they would need to add a LA area embarkation port. The Alaska market offers them a better return if they need to choice between Alaska and Southern California/ Mexico.

While the Southern market is there I believe Royal ran the numbers and based upon other commitments it did not add up.  A California Coastal itinerary from Seattle or Vancouver could be a interest cruise and maybe will be tested in the future. I believe with Voyager now added we may see some short cruises added, Almost a cruise to nowhere but with a stop in Vancouver to meet the requirement of International port call.

    Hi Matt and Community.
Not sure if this is ever been brought up before?
I do see that there is a topic discussion under the people connect forum, a topic listed "periscope Peeps"
I think it would be a great idea, if on the main page of Royal Caribbean Blog, where the different forum's are listed, like Excursions and such, if there was actually a message forum, just for Periscoping posts.
That way, anyone interested in watching the periscopes, it would be much easier way for them, to find out who is Periscoping, from what ship, and when. Just a Suggestion however.
I have enjoyed watching people periscope from different ships. It has inspired me to periscope, from my two upcoming cruises on Royal Caribbean, Allure of the seas, and majesty of the seas.

Thank you! I do actually have a balcony cabin for this upcoming cruise on the Allure. I am also bringing my binoculars, to try and Spot Dolphins when we are Cruising, and the ports, when we pull in.
