Navigator to the Rescue

Recommended Posts

I love seeing Royal Caribbean ships doing things like this...sorry for the image quality...basically, Navigator provided diesel to this sail boat in the open ocean when their rudder broke and weren't able to navigate by sail, but could using their motor. The problem was they were over 1000 nautical miles from shore.

How much diesel did they give them?  1,000 miles would take some diesel to achieve...

I wonder if they could add some sail and use the motor to maintain heading?

I did some digging, here's the backstory from the Facebook page, including below:

Good morning!

Late last night we arrived horta, Azores! It took 16 days from st Martin. First week went great, we did good speed and passed halfway on day 7! Day 8 we still did good speed, and we were preparing for a low pressure that would come night to Wednesday / day 9.

We took three fox before it got dark, and everyone was prepared for what was probably going to be a long night. It became longer than first. In the 22th time, before the storm came too full we lost complete control on the boat. We checked all kinds of things and came to the conclusion that the rudder was most likely broken. (it was dark, a lot of wind and big waves, so to check under the boat was out of the We tore all sail and started the engine, then we got a little control on the boat. That night we did around 4 KN an hour, and vindmåleren showed up to 43 kn! The waves washed over the boat constantly and regularly into the cockpit. A big wave also left the anchor that was attached aft. Day 9, it still blew a lot and we continued small ahead. We rained on mileage and knew early that we didn't have enough to go on engine the remaining 1020 NM.

Friday 26. Came "Rescue" out of the blue: Cruise Ship Navigator of the seas!
From Radiosamtalen:
-«Navigator of The Seas, this is Windy Lady, over»
-"windy lady, go ahead"
-«Morning, this is just a question, are you able to assist us with some diesel? We broke our rudder and do not have enough diesel to reach Horta!»
-"Standby, in will ash the captain"

Eventually the captain comes on and asks:
-«Where are you from?»
-"Norway"
-" jaaa, I think it was a Norwegian accent there yes!"

Navigator of the seas against us and told us to remain calm. They lowered a lettbåt that came out to us, picked up our empty jerrykanner, they filled up and came back with 200 l diesel!! We were probably one of the highlights that day to the 5000 people aboard, and we got Cheers when the operation was completed and we continued on the trip! Thank you to captain kjell nordmo and his crew aboard the navigator of the seas, RCCL!!!

The rest of the trip went slow, but nice, in varying weather and waves. We saw dolphins and whales, beautiful sunsets and stjernehimmler! It was extremely delicious to get in port yesterday, and we were probably sitting record in efficiency from the boat was moored to the first round of beer was ordered at cafe sport!!

Today we have cleared, fixed, talked to people at home and worked with a solution so we can get a new rudder and leave as soon as possible!!

Attach link to news articles about the navigator of the seas its "rescue mission"! we want to clarify that we never sent out a distress call, and that the articles about us are In retrospect, we have received several messages and photos from passengers aboard the navigator of the seas

Morale is high, and tonight we're going to a real steakhouse! It's good to be "home" in Europe!!
We give sound when we know something more!!

Seilerhilsen,
CE, n & v
Motor Yacht Windy Lady

There are photos of the crew, damage to the rudder, as well as Navigator (looks like a nice contingent on the pool deck!) included in the Facebook post I linked.

Great job by Royal Caribbean!

This is a great story!  It's nice to hear about some of the things RC does to assist others in need whether it be small or large like how they assisted St Thomas, St Maarten and Puerto Rico last year after the hurricane.

I'm sure this is the type of story Jim Walker will conveniently leave off his Cruise Law News propaganda website!
