Cash and luggage

Recommended Posts

Is there anything on board that you need cash for?

Do they take your luggage when you check-in before getting on board?   I've seen people carrying  their luggage on board and with some chips they have a place to put it but not all.   This is the first time we are not flying so we do not have a transfer.

Thanks!

I usually keep a little bit of cash to tip for room service or similar utility.

You can check all or none of your bags - just be sure that any wine you're bringing is hand-carried.  Simply provide to a porter (along w/ a tip of a couple dollars a bag) the bags you want to check, and if you don't have tags on them already, the porter can help you with this.  You should carry on anything you'll need before say, 1800 on embarkation day.  This means pool clothes, medications, etc.

I have cash for tipping porters, use in ports on shore excursions and in the casino.

There are porters who will take your luggage and check it for you, just like at the airport.  You will find a need to keep some luggage with you (carry-ons) because you need some of the things in the interim period between when you get the luggage delivered to your room. Or, you have fragile items.

My cash stays with me, I usually carry a backpack or brief case, I carry on a small "carry on" suite case, the carry on is for medication and a swim suite and extra toiletries and maybe a change of clothes, it has never happened to me but there is the possibility that your luggage could get lost and not make it to your room, typically the only time I have heard this happening is when people fly and the airlines lose the luggage and not the cruise ship.

Your room should typically become available around 1 to 2pm, they will announce it over the ship PA system, then you can go drop off anything extra you are carrying around and then really go explore the ship.

...also, don't forget to take your travel documents WITH YOU.  Don't leave them in the luggage (if they were ever there) when you give it to the porters.  Had to chase them down ONCE to get the set sail pass.  Never did it again...

As far as cash goes, I will try and keep a number of $1 and $5 on me at all times for tipping waiters and other staff.  It never amounts to much over the course of a cruise but it's awkward not to have it onhand.  Typically we don't spend that much on shore but we never EVER use a credit card outside of the country unless we are familiar with the vendor (think jewelry in St. Thomas here....).
