Cactus527
@steverk tagged because I know he'll have ideas. After our cruise this summer, we'll arrive back in Galveston on Sunday morning. Our flight out of Houston doesn't leave until 11:00 p.m. that night. Any thoughts on what to do after disembarking prior to going to the airport? I thought about getting a day use pass at a hotel, or doing the Royal Caribbean shore excursion to the Houston Space Center, but I was hoping for some other ideas that maybe I haven't considered. It will be myself and two teenagers. Thanks in advance!
FionaMG
I can't speak to your particular port but our experience of Royal's post-cruise excursions is that they usually have you arriving at the airport in PLENTY of time for a flight at whatever the cut-off time is in the excursion description. So if the one you're looking at says something along the lines of "For domestic flights departing after 4 pm", you'll be at the airport at the very latest two hours before that. In your case that's going to mean a lot of time hanging around at the airport before your flight. I think potentially a day pass at a hotel might be a better option for you. Or, if you're comfortable with the idea, consider hiring a car for the day. That would give you the freedom to make plans for a full day's outing somewhere. melmar02
We always say we want to go to the aquarium, which is in downtown Houston, the day before our cruise, but we haven't really gotten in early enough. They have the exhibits, some rides, a restaurant, and they open at 10am. http://m.aquariumrestaurants.com/#2776 I don't recommend the children's museum as the exhibits will be a little young for your teens. My kids (14 and 10) would love the Color Factory too. https://colorfactory.co/houston/?gclid=CjwKCAiAk--dBhABEiwAchIwkSir8oPoc77JxtIBWFdwAXI7DpN6oE7x0GDT29h8R3Ax_jr68kHk-xoCIW8QAvD_BwE Cactus527

I don't know your kids, so I'm not sure what they might enjoy, but here are some of my ideas: Go to the Galveston Schlitterbahn for waterpark fun Check out Pleasure Pier on Seawall Blvd. Go to Seawolf park. They have a WWII Destroyer Escort and a submarine you can tour on your own. You can walk on to the Bolivar Ferry for free. Usually, you can spot dolphins as it crosses the Houston ship channel. This takes about 90 minutes round trip. Moving to the mainland: Check out the Kemah Boardwalk in Kemah TX. (This is about 30 miles from Galveston and about 5 miles from Space Center Houston) Space Center Houston is always worth seeing. Don't miss the difficult to find door that leads to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Shuttle mock up. The Battleship Texas is currently in limbo, but is worth touring if they ever get it open again. At the moment, it is in drydock and they are giving drydock tours (for a hefty fee). It may be your only chance to see a ship from underneath. I doubt the kids would enjoy it, but If you're into really morbid stuff, the National Museum of Funeral History is located pretty close to IAH. (No kidding! somebody really created this place!) I've never been there. You gotta admit, it is unique to Houston! Eyeonhevn and Cactus527

That's south of Houston, close to Space Center Houston. Cactus527

TJ_Shopper
I have a similar situation. We will be getting off the Adventure of the Seas on Saturday, January 28th. Our flight at Hobby Airport is at 4:55 p.m. We were thinking of dropping off our bags at The Cruise Stop and explore the Strand area which is Old Galveston. I was told that The Cruise Stop will hold our luggage for $5 a bag. It is across the street from the port. Obviously, you have more time to kill, but this is probably what we will do. We'll walk around the shops and then grab lunch before heading to the airport. Does anyone know if the Strand area is okay to walk around? Is there enough to do to kill a few hours? Thanks and sorry, I did not mean to hijack this thread but thought it might be helpful for others. Cactus527
Eyeonhevn
I was going to suggest Kemah boardwalk too. There are several things there, shopping, restaurants, the aquarium…. A good afternoons worth of leisure.
